First of all, dont lock this thread. Im not discussing the problem CCP had. Im merely discussing UAC.
Right. Remember when Vista launched? Some thought UAC was awesome, some thought it was crap and should die in a fire.
But look now. We have an example where UAC(Provided that there was any boot.ini in vista) would have saved alot of people's ass'es, if CCP made the installer work as a normal user.
Fine, i admit it. I actually have UAC disabled. But my point still stands. UAC maybe isnt all that bad? It catches unintended, potentially fatal, errors like this. Its like Antiviruses which catches program which have similar behaviour like a virus. People say ohhh ohhhh its the root of all evils, but when the conditions are right, it saves your butt.
Anybody still wanna argue that UAC is the root of all evil?

If CCP did it right, it wouldnt even pop up. In which case the program doesnt get administrator rights, and cant delete the boot.ini(Isnt on Vista, but XP, so UAC wont have an affect unless it was on XP, or vista had boot.ini)

Edited by: Mtthias Clemi on 06/12/2007 14:19:43 So what your saying is... it doesnt even matter because the OS that has UAC doesn't have boot.ini... so it is of no consequence whatsoever.
EDIT: anyone who starts an OP with "Dont lock this" is begging for it to be locked!!! --------------------------------------------

If CCP did it right it wouldn't be deleting your boot.ini in the first place.

Thats right, but it doesnt change the fact that they messed up. There HAVE to be security nets to catch mistakes, or we will forever end up having to fix windows every time somebody makes a mistake. If Windows just is a sitting duck, waiting to have someone do a mistake and its dead, thats a bad thing.
Not even linux allows you to do this, unless your su, in which case its your own damn fault.
