To save this guy from shame I am not giving a name here, however, I recently ventured into 0.3 and noticed a another player I figured would be fun to harass. I locked the guy challenged him in Local and was met with silence. NP. We were asfely out of range of the senturies and so I fired off a missile to open our 'engagement'. To my utter dismay I realised the joker had logged off. Cursing my luck I slammed my fist into the keyboard.
So, my question is this: could a good case be made in favour of 'the powers that be' including a slight delay of a few seconds after you log off in order to discourage this type of annoying activity?

there is already a slight delay. Thats why you are advised not to log off in low sec space or in a fight... as you will be open for attack.

Edited by: khainestar on 10/03/2004 11:44:53 I have had this too but they didn't log out quick enough
When you log out your ship hangs around for about 2 mins just sitting there asking to go bang.
So to the ibis pilot that I met in 0.0 space that told me
"if u attack i will just log on ur ass"
I say
Next time remember that an ibis can be chewed up and spat out in about 30 seconds by a blackbird.
Enjoy your trip home pod boy.

Supposedly a ship of a person who logs off would stay in space for 2 minutes after they logged/dropped. There is however an exploit (well know but not allowed to be discussed on teh forums) that allowed people to instalog theri ships out.
That said I was under the impression the CCP changed this. If a person logs off/drops their ship supposedly excutes a 1,000,000 km warp in a random direction (if they are scrambled they will not warp). After that their ship just sits there and presumably the instalog exploit won;t make thier ship disappear.
IF (note the big "IF" as this is open to question still if it now works this way) this happens you should be able to use your scanner to find the guy fairly easily and get over there and pop his ass. Few people deserve podding more than those who logoff to weasle out of a fight.

Just to put a different perspective on this, last night I suffered three disconnections whilst in 0.4 space, due to the inadequacies of my ISP. At the time I didn't know about the safe warping away thing, so I was very worried about my character's safety until I relogged on (I normally dock before quitting). I lost control of my ship about 10-15 seconds before the game crashed, which is a long time in EVE. I wasn't in combat at the time, but I might have been.
I'm just mentioning this because connection problems do happen, and while I understand that people attempting to avoid combat by logging off is annoying, I think the current short delay before warping away is a reasonable and sufficient solution. I wouldn't want to see it extended. As long as they can't log off quicker than they could have warped away anyway, that's enough, I think. Better to have a mildly ****ed-off attacker than a dead defender because his connection went down at the wrong moment.
Incidentally, I thought you got warped to a safe station, rather than X thousand miles in a random direction. Is that wrong?

Is there any In-Game sxplanation for Logging off? In Spaxce, I mean? What actually happens to a ship? Ive never seen anyone log off. Does their ship just disappear? Or sit there till they log on again. I always dock before logging, for RP reasons more than anything else. (I also dock before having a bath or cooking a hot meal :P)
I would consider logging during combat to avoid death without any In Game explanation an exploit, myself.
