years ago i read the shortstory from king, and i was totally blown away by it, i thought its one his best storys ever. 2 days ago i watched the movie, and OMG!! a Stephen King Movie that doesnt suck!! really liked it, altough soemtimes it was a bit overacted i thought, but it doesnt hurt the movie. Only thing i'd have to complain about is, that the movie gave the feel that they only were trapped for 2days in there and generally things happen way too fast but thats the difficulties for making a movie i guess.
Good movie, great atmosphere, awesome Critters, stupid religious fanatics :) and a ending that throws a brick into your face :)

I saw it with the worst audience I have ever sat with.
"POP IS ASS DOG." "NO DUDE DON'T SHOOT THE OLD *****." *Inappropriate laughter* "Why he sad? Marry that other chick, DRIVE ***** AHHHHHH"
Yeah, I pretty much didn't see the movie.
A friend of mine whose a religious ****** didn't like it because it made fun of religion. Ohh the wonders of living in the south.

it was surprisingly good especially for a movie based on something written by stephen king. i enjoyed it more than the war of the worlds movie. i would say the ending was the best. it is the most blatantly obvious thing that indicates stephen king was involved. they might as well cut out the rest of the movie and just have the ending. sort of like how the bag scene in American Beauty was the only thing you eagerly wanted to watch again. you are left with a generic killer fog movie if you take away "everyone lives miserably ever after" ending and the misanthropy towards women and children.

First off many movies originally written by Stephen King were excellent (although you might be surprised he wrote them):
Shawshank Redemption (one of the best movies ever) Stand By Me (called The Body I think in the book form) The Green Mile The Shining (classic...one of the best horror flicks of all time)
As for the movie's ending that is not Stephen King. The Director changed the ending from the book with King's blessing (King absolutely loved the new ending and said he would have written it that way had it occurred to him).
EDIT: Admittedly some King books should never have been made into a movie like Maximum Overdrive. The Stand could be flipping awesome but so far attempts at a movie on it have kinda sucked compared to the book.

sorry i wasn't very clear. i didn't mean to criticize stephen king, but how lame some movies adapt his writing to film. i never read The Mist and i'm certainly surprised to learn about the real author of the ending.

Yep...easiest to just quote the man himself:
Quote: Just last week Stephen King was out promoting The Mist and at a press conference (via Cinema Blend) he went on record as publicly saying that he approved of and even "loved" the new ending. Here's King's official statement:
Frank wrote a new ending that I loved. It is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.
SOURCE: FirstShowing.Net
IIRC in the book it ends when they leave the supermarket and get in the car and drive away. That's it...just sort of left hanging.

One of the things about SK's books that I found is that he generally has a good story right up until the end which to me it feels like he just kinda throws something in at the last minute.
IT was the first book I ever bought and read of his (picked it up in the SF airport during a layover when I was 10) and I even have the movie. Pennywise is a totally sadistic and awesome clown but suddenly you get to the ending and it's some alien spider.
I read the mist a long time ago and it was a terrific story from start to finish. I'm glad you guys reminded me there was a movie out, I'll have to catch it when I've got money.
I would also like to see if they could ever make a movie based on the Darktower series.

You can watch it here (cam quality so not so hot but livable and you need to download their viewer but that viewer is fine and not spyware).
Darktower could be great as a movie.
