I guess I am one of the unfortunate ones. On patch day, I was anxious as any to try the new trinity client, and as soon as the patch was on the website I downloaded and installed it as fast as I possibly could. I was so anxious to try the new client, I couldn't wait till I got home, and instead installed it on our office server which serves about 50 workstations. Shortly after the install, I was having some hiccups and decided to reboot the server. (was evening my time and office had closeD). Well, as you can guess, my server did not come back up. My boot.ini had been destroyed, I later learned, and I was fuxxored. I didn't know what to do, panicked, and just went home and pretended that nothing ever happened. I would deny having been in the office at that time if anyone questioned me. The next morning, h oever, my phone rings at 5:00 am, and it's my boss, alas, letting me know that the company is unable to operate because they can't start their server. Fast forward: right now I'm waiting to be called in, probably to be fired, and just wondering what excuse I can possible give to try to save my job.

You installed a game on a company server ?
There are multiple fixes for this available, see this, http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=651679
After you have restored that boot.ini file, every other file will be intact.
Never ever install anything unnecessary to a server...

Edited by: Reacz on 07/12/2007 12:19:32 No excuse.
You did a dumb thing, accept responsibility.
OR
If you think you can get away with it, say it failed and you're not sure why, and then proceed to work your arse off to get it working ASAP. Write a phoney report detailing it had a corrupt boot sector/whatever and that its now fixed and you're keeping an eye on the situation. If you're really desperate say it was a Windows Update security patch that broke it, strangely this excuse works 99% of the time.
Most managers don't know jack anyway.

Svargas Ktol, you did the equiveland of putting every isk you had to your name into highly expensive BPO form, and taking a trip to BoB hq just to see if it was as defended as you thought. If you installed this on a company server (/me facepalm) you deserve to be fired. Rate my charecters please, updated so need 3 more, 2M isk for each good review |

For this story to be true you would have had to have EVE already installed on the 'Office Server' before you upgraded to TRINITY. Naughty boy!
I call bull on this story, but if it is true then it serve(r)s you right.

You have my sympathy.
Why not tell them you were testing the system's firewall, and ask *why* they don't have a monitor program running to prevent alterations to root system files without a SysMans authorisation. |

In addition, I am pondering the stupidity of installing programs/games/whatever on a server's OS partition. Always thought people kept those separate.

Personally I'd be firing whoever decided using XP on a server was a good idea in the first place

Since this is inevitably going to turn into a flame on the OP, I shall deliver a mercy lock.

It's not a problem - a server will never be booted... ___ 06.12.2007: "The Backslash Wednesday"
