Hello everyone. I just started playing a trial account and I was wondering what ship I should get to get rid of the rookie ship. I would like to do a long range sniper type ship if that is possible. Also, if you could give me a recommended "build" that would be sweet too. Sorry if this has been asked a million times lol. Thanks. :)

first off, remove the idea of "builds" completely from your mind. There's no such thing. You can train everything there is in EVE, all it takes is the training time necessary.
Secondly, frigates. Learn to fly in a fast little frigate, and if you like the basic premise of the racial frigate you choose, you can hop it up to the cruiser of that racial family.
It doesnt take that long to learn frigate skills of all 4 racial family ships.
"Sniper" combat is doable by all races. Just have to focus on turrets. -

The 'sniper ship' of the Caldari frig fleet is the Merlin, stick some 125mm rails on it (they are easier to fit than the 150mm's) and that should set you on your way, thats how I got started 4+ years ago.
Another option is to get a kessie and start throwing missiles all over the place.
If you want to stick with Caldari then railguns and missiles will be your primary offensive weapons.

Edited by: Panch0Villa on 07/12/2007 20:32:52 Ships vary in design, and are usually built for a purpose:
Bantam: Mining ship (Mining Lasers)
Merlin: Heavy Combat Gunship (Railguns)
Kestrel: Missile Ship (Light Missiles)
Heron: Scanning Ship (Not so useful without the appropriate Astrometrics skills)
Griffin: Electronic Countermeasures ship (Not so useful as a beginner ship)
Condor: Interceptor ship (Note that this is the purpose of the Condor, but there is a class of ships called Interceptors, these are the advanced versions of the speedy beginner frigates.
Pick one that suits your playstyle and mission. Most people will have many and lose many many many ships over the course of the game.
If you tell us what you want to accomplish, we can be of further assistance with your ship setups, check the ships/modules section of the forum for previously posted advice on this. Re vera, potas bene. |

sweet thanks guys. So far the Merlin or Kestrel seem to be the most interesting ships to me. So what skills should I focus on for these ships? Right now I just chose "Learning" since I didn't know what else to choose...

Personally I would go for the Kestrel, as it is a powerful ship, and it only requires you to train skills for a single weapon type: Missiles.
What you need to be training specifically for that ship are the missile skills, both Standard Missiles, Rockets, and the general missile support skills, and the Caldari Frigate skill. Also check out the shield skills, which are found in the Engineering section. You should also look at the skill that apply to all ships like Engineering, Electronics, Navigation etc.
Of course, not at the same time, but it's an idea about what you could be training for it. Just concentrating on that one little frigate could give you months and months of training time if you wanted to maximise it's abilities. But that would be going overboard

Download Evemon to get a well designed Skill Planning program. It let's you check your characters skills, compare to future skills, plan and calculate the skills you will learn and their time, and look at skills' bonuses and purposes. It even has a list of ships and items and tells you if you can use them, or what skills you need in order to use them. Re vera, potas bene. |

Yes.
the Eve Fitting Tool is the current one, I haven't used it too much so I can't vouch for it's efficacy, but people seem to use it. Just be advised, ship loadouts "on paper" may play different in game, due to actual game mechanics and the occasional patch change that got missed on EFT. Note that EFT is basically a work in progress, something is missing here and there, bugfixes and missing/incorrect information is in there. Double check and flight test fits ingame before committing to them in battle. Re vera, potas bene. |
