I think the current intro movie is pretty cool and does well in setting the stage for the Eve backstory. However, I also think it is largely responsible for the very lopsided distribution of player races (taken from the Dr.EyjoG blog found here).
Now admittedly, there are several other factors. Caldari being the easy mission running race. Achura being the min-maxer's favorite. Amarr need oomph spam on the forums. Gallente looking like Back Street Boy rejects or an over the hill hippy. But I always think it best to address one thing at a time, and the first thing a potential new player sees seems like a good place to start imho.
So what's wrong with the intro movie? The wording. Let's break it down:
The intro movie starts off with earth and it's turmoils, the wormhole opening, humans going "weeeee, nice wormhole. we'll take it", the collapse of the wormhole stranding the colonies, and finally the "dark ages" for those stranded on the other side. That's all good.
Then it starts introducing the races. And this is where it goes wrong.
The first to emerge from the darkness were the Amarr, a monotheistic race fervently committed to their faith. They reinvented space flight and soon discovered they were not alone. What I hear/see: - First into space (again)... Must be smarties - Religous nutters... bad priests - Dudes in hoods, chanting stuff probably... boooooring - Yeah, these guys are appealing. -1
The Amarrians encountered the Minmatar race dismissing them as primitive barbarians destined for a life of slavery. Moving quickly to subjugate them they launched a merciless crusade against the Minmatar worlds. What I hear/see: - Woo woo! Big breasted angry chick! Hawt! - Wait... Barbarians? There's a dude with a club thing... What? They launch each other into space with cricket bats? - Slavery? Subjugated? Eh... - Beat up by the bad priests??! Hrm... I'm thinking no - Well at least they got chicks... +1 over the Amarr for that, I guess, but still a negative overall. And yeah, another -1 to amarr for being bad old slaver types.
At the same time the Gallente race flourished nearby. They created the first democratic republic of the new era and established a regional federation of independent states. What I hear/see: - Woo woo! More scantily clad chicks! - What the hell with the dude with the bed head hairdo and the She Blinded Me with Science goggles? - democratic... republic... federation... independent states... *yawn* - Sounds ok, I guess...
The Caldari emerged as the strongest state among them. Driven by the relentless pursuit of economic and military might, their nationalist ideals soon clashed with the Gallente liberalism. What I hear/see: - Yes, it means the Caldari state was the strongest among the Gallente Federation, but what I hear is, "Caldari = Strongest". BOOM! Headshot #1 to player race distribution - Hey hey! Big breasted, leather clad chick! With a Gun!! +5 at least - Dude with Billy Idol hair cut. Rebel Yell. That's cool - Military might!? Hell yeah! BOOM! Headshot #2 to player race distribution
So the last race a new player is presented with, the Caldari, basically have no negatives described and seem to have everything going for them. Chicks with guns, decent haircuts, military might, fighting liberals. Oorah!
It is not a big mystery why Amarr are so far behind and the Caldari so stupidly over populated.
So with Trinity's new graphics, I think the time has come to re-do the old intro movie. Spice up the Amarr and Minny descriptions.
What say you?

Edited by: Cocoi on 10/12/2007 12:19:37 I agree a thousand times. Distribution of players is a bit pathetic, and since I came back after a year or so not playing, I was disappointed to watch the same intro movie on my Intel Mac. So much has changed since.

edit; to be more constructive; how about mashing up the Trinity-esque combat / fleet 'drool shots' and the intro, so people see more of Amarr and Minmatar bling and the weapons that come with them (lasers are appealing). _________________ I design icons. Interesting analysis, I pretty much agree with all points. Amarr and Minmatar need the most work, in my opinion, the intro makes them look a bit primitive, (minmatar with swords or whatever that is, and amarr with medieval-like priest clothing) they need to look more high-tech, yes even the rusty matars!

That'd be cool.
But whatever they do, they need to be careful what they say about each race. It's all in the presentation. Word-smithing really.
For instance: The Amarr thought the Minmatar barbarians and launched a crusade to subjugate them. OR The Minmatar became hardened warriors, their iron will forged in the fires of battle as they fought the Amarr for their freedom.
Which one makes you want to play a Minmatar more? It's not really anything complicated. It's just a matter of trying to present each race in some kind of positive light.
The Amarr were ugly old pedo-bears who had to wear hoods all the time to get chicks. OR <show the classic old Amarr guy with his Julius Ceaser balding pattern sitting on a big gold throne> The Amarr, sex gods of rock and roll. The epitomy of verility well into their 80s.
Ok... drifting of course a bit, but you get the idea.

I think a new intro could be ace but dont seriously think it'd change a thing.
Theres alot of reasons Caldari are the largest smallest factor is probably people like you who based their decison on a few lines :P
And for the record I thought Minmater description came out on top by far and I had already made my decison.
Barbarbians are tough, strong, they were underdogs and won their freedom with bloody brutal revenge. Most interesting back story fo sho.

pretty much signed all the way, to be honest.
Although, I think they should wait until Ambulation to create the movie. Instead of having just stills, go into the ancient texts about how we got here, then when they go into the races, actually have "Day of Darkness" type of videos playing and what have you.
Really, the limitations are pretty much endless, seeing how the introduction movie is located client side, and not server side.

The OP has good points. I think alot of people were influenced by the intro movie when picking their first character race. Funny thing though, I saw amarr and knew thats the one I was going to play.
They enslaved minmatar = superior ships/techs and evil. Evil + monotheistic = win in my book.

The introduction of the achura didn't help the situation any.
There needs to be some focus put on the assumed existance of subversive elements within each race and the internal strife that is ever present. Like for example the ammatar and their stance towards the amarr and minmatar as well as the different minmatar tribes and corporations.
In fact there needs to be more fiction about the different subsets of the factions and a link to said fiction upon entering the game for the first time as to not get suckered into believing it's that simplistic.

I agree 100% with this. When I started EVE and looked at that video I thought "Wow...The Caldari are major cool. They are hardened combat lords who revel in cold calculating tactics and economic warfare! They are the race for me!" But then I become one and soon realize they suck more than the Amarr at PvP and that besides the good stats they are worthless losers. The supposedly weaker Gallente kick their butt at every turn without even a HINT of close competition. Now I almost wish I had gone with my 2nd choice, the Minmatar, the legendary freedom fighting rebels!
As for Caldari being the best mission runners, pffft, biggest Myth in EVE. Show me a well fit Domi that cannot outperform a Raven every time. That is just BS, I can outtank and DEFINATELY out gank with my Maelstrom and the Minmatar are supposed to be the "weak" mission runners besides Amarr.

Oh yeah, seriously, the game DOES need a new intro movie ! Err... I mean... a new intro powerpoint slide presentation
I'd recommend keeping most of what we have now, but also adding a LOT of the "recent developements" too. Like, you know, about Ammatar/Khanid, the BACKSTORY to the Caldari megacorp "practices", some hints at Caldari being "a bit overcrowded right now", hints that the Amarr navy is finally shaping up in quality (not just quantity), and other stuff like that.

Well, based on the movie and the intro blurb I decided to make my first and only character Gallente, so I think it's in the eye of the beholder. I like the Gallente picture cause the dude and the building look all cyberpunk and the chick is hot (if you look carefully, you can see butt ***** woot). I'm all about individual freedom and liberty too, plus the Gallente seem the most like a modern day civilized society. And they make lots of **** and other films and stuff.
Caldari was my second choice, though, again based purely on style and cool-factor. They have the military might and huge corporate state which is also kind cyberpunk (I like cyberpunk, BTW, and guessing by your name I would assume you do too--Blade Runner FTW!).

Caldari characters have been the #1 race for years, easily before this trailer was made.
I think its a combination of good stats and their PVE leg-up on non-Caldari characters that would train for ravens, which makes them so popular. Not to mention how good they are for making various science alts.

I'm not sure if you're responding to the original post or not, but just in case...
If you think me saying the Caldari = "Chicks with guns, decent haircuts, military might, fighting liberals. Oorah!" is an indication of me worrying about RP accuracy... well, I think you might have your eyes crossed.
You should of just said, "Wow. Look at the crazy person". That would have at least been somewhat accurate.

For myself, I did not see the movie when I rolled my character several years back. I just took the first logo that appealed to me, which happened to be Amarr. I read on and discovered that they match my conservative streak (although I do not approve of slavery), plus their ship designs were frankly fantastic!
More to the op's statements and analysis... I know that the people that don't go "kewl", "dude" or "!!!111elevenone" on every forum post are a minority. The eloquent description of Caldari and the demographics of MMO populations bias the character population for the beginning of the game. I can agree with that. However, after the experience with the game grows, two more important factors (at least more important than sparsely leather-clad women with firearms) come to play: myths and bean counting.
Myths spring from the forums, mainly. There are too many of them to re-iterate. It's like with the politics, the ones that shout/talk the most seem to be the wisest or claim most authority... Ridiculous, like Paris Hilton running for president of USA.
And bean counting is the approach that ruins every game, in my opinion, be it a solo desktop game or PC game or an MMO. When you start doing extreme math to punch out the most of the attribute you consider important, the game's over. It's lifeless grind, no fun, boring, and gets you aggravated mostly, since one usually involves him/herself also emotionally (since I have to win). This phenomenon is responsible for phenomenal number of Achuras around -- blame bean counters, e-peeners or farmers.
And last but not least, I fully /sign this idea to introduce a new introduction movie. I guess there should be a new one (or an additional segment) after each expansion. Follow the timeline (although the timeline is in deep dregs right now, raped and abandonned). Fully supported! A scientist must be an optimist at heart - to have the strength to rally against a chorus of voices saying "it cannot be done". |
