Yes, but those are the risks. You want to make more ISK than you can safely make in empire space? Then you have to accept the added risks. There is a balance. Any corporation that doesn't budget to lose more than a few of those stations when that patch first goes live or provide very good protection for them, should get smacked hard. Those things for the first few weeks are going to be pirate magnets.

Your word; random. You want some violence and a use for all those gunnery skills? What's wrong with corporate wars? What's wrong with claiming and defending territory, or attacking same?
What's wrong with it as far as most "pirates" are concerned is that it takes some planning, intelligence, subtlety and a willingness to delay gratification. (I wanna blow something up NOW!!)
