A friend of mine in-game (don't know him in RL) finally got back on EVE last night. He had been offline due to the boot.ini bug rendering his computer inoperable. He paid a computer repairman $200 US to fix it, not knowing at the time that it was EVE-related. Of course when he got back online, he discovered the cause, and called CCP's toll-free hotline to see if they would reimburse him for his repair bills.
They did. They credited his account with a one year subscription to EVE. Were I him, I'd be very happy with that settlement. Good job, CCP.

Assuming this is true, congrats to CCP.
Kinda... almost... wish I had a boot.ini now.
Hey, next patch can you make it scrub /home/user? :)

Way to keep a person playing and reimburse them at the same time.
OTOH, way to get people to pointlessly tie up a phone number.

i know i put more sdram into a neigbours computer (old ram from a 1999 computer i had) not only did it boost his 7 year old computer 256-512 and aol started up from 3 minutes to 30 seconds, i could have charged his anything
i also fixed his printer problem only thing needed doing was windows needed to get a file loaded form its (wherever it hold files to let hardware to work) to its (let hardware work) ince he dident have a clue what was couseing his printer and windows to say ??,
like i said i could have said and charged his anything, since he only uses his computer for e-mails, so you need to be exteamly couscous when it comes to these things!

Lets make a car analogy..
Car repairmen takes $150 to fix a simple thing in 10 minutes which would take the normal guy hours to do. Worth it? Possibly not.. on the other hand are you willing to spend hours to maybe not find the fault and possibly make things worse if you're not good with cars?
Same with computers...

have you ever asked for computer help?
at least in america they dont' chrage you 200$.
maybe 200$ if somethign happens inside your computer. but if the repair people jumpped right to hardware issues then they were ripping him off. They should of used a safe mode windows disk and check it on the software side.
should of only cost 40$. that's what it cost at most computer stores.
it sounds like they went to town on his motherboard CPU, everything. which is dumb.

No but this is like the car repairman charging your $200 to install your new car radio. Its not a difficult job, doesnt take much time to do, lots of people could tell you how to do it. Sure $200 is fine if its fixing a big problem but fixing a boot.ini is so simple it seems like a massive rip off. But as other people said its what you can get away with when your customers have no understanding of what your doing.

Repair stories, ooo! These are fun
This one time I went away on work related business and came back to a dishwasher that would no longer fill with water. Not knowing the first thing about where to start with this, I called an appliance repair place.
A nice fellow comes to my door that afternoon, pops the panel off the bottom of my dishwasher's front, and stares in there for a second. He sticks his hand in, pulls it out, turns on the dishwasher and voila, it's fixed. $75 bucks please. But he felt bad because he had to charge me for the time, so he showed me what the problem was an how to fix it. This water-lubricated pump had dried out and was siezed, so you poke this little thingamajig on the side and it primes it with a little water. Good to go.
It was a class act for this guy to help me out in this way, and it's a class act for CCP to help this fellow out (if indeed it did happen and this thread isn't a joke).
I guess the moral of the story is: sometimes people do nice things for you out of the goodness of their own heart if you're nice to them. Also, it never hurts to get a girlfriend who likes to wash dishes by hand.

Read original post. He did not know it was the boot.ini until he tried logging on to eve. They actually had to find the problem, and not just say; "Fix my boot.ini, it's corrupted." |

Edited by: Alita Eelai on 12/12/2007 13:47:12 200$ sounds perfectly fine, with a few "IF"...
- in first place, a tech comming to your place OR sending transport to pick up your computer, costs money. I charge 40Ç per hour... and transport is not included.
- secondly, let's say a computer arrives at my lab with bluescreen of death when trying to boot up. how on earth can i know (unless i am a eve player and eve-forums user) that it was related to a simple deletion of boot.ini? i might find the problem in 5 minutes (specially if it ocurrs to me to boot from a CD and do a FIXBOOT straight away, but i usually go for a memtest first, which takes a few hours) and it can take me 4 hours to find the problem. maybe i also chose to just do a windows repair, which on a real fast machine is MIN. 45minutes.
- third: not even online help is accurate: googling the problem about HAL.DLL will bring up so much stupid nonsense... hal.dll and boot.ini (as many other bluescreen messages) are so common... it can be caused by a gazillion of things. if the tech is more or less smart (or lucky) he'll notice the missing boot.ini more or less fast and fix it... the hal.dll is a diiferent issue because if you try to replace it and it's not a 100% equal version, you make things even worse.
- forth: all this wannabe smarta$$es around here claiming "ZOMG 200 BUCKS ZOMG I CAN DO IN 5 MINUTES" i'd like to see what you would have done if you didn't know the CAUSE, aka: boot.ini deleted by a game update. i doubt you would even have managed to fix it, you would probably only have it made worse AND it would take you probably a whole evening if not a whole weekend to fix.
so... unless you are in the I&T business, STFU about 200 bucks

in the dev blog its says:
Quote: When this problem was discovered, developers were called back to work in the middle of the night to investigate and fix it. Since then we have been working hard around the clock helping our customers that were affected by this problem, quickly establishing phone support and even making arrangements for external support technicians, such as Geek Squad, to assist our customers when necessary. In all, we've been contacted by fewer than 215 users (170 by petition, 45 by phone) who were adversely affected by the boot.ini issue and we will remain diligent in our efforts to see that each case is resolved satisfactorily, first through our Customer Support and if that fails through third party tech assistance such as Geek Squad. please v
so it seems they wil cover geek squad if you called them first

My dumbass brother in law tried to play GTA San Andreas on his PC but it didn't run it very well so he thought he would try and mess with some OS based over clocking software.
One fried graphics later and he was to embarrassed to ask me to look at it for him so he ended up paying ú150 for a ú40 graphics card and ú30 installation because PC world replaced the OEM parts, all he needed was a cheap graphics card and 5 mins to fit it. --------------------------------------- Output folder: C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE Delete file: \boot.ini Extract: boot.ini... 100% |

correct. in fact, when your computer is not able to boot... it's kinda hard to read forums or see phone numbers on a website.
and many ppl. do not realize this has been caused by CCP, so they are more worried to fix their computer and get their useful documents back, than reading a gaming forum.

those who can't live without checking forums every 5 minutes (like u or me) will probably know about the boot.ini stuff. what i said was about those who DON'T read this forums so much, thus will probably not be too bothered about reading this forum, but to get their computer back to work.

Seems like they are doing everything possible to help people affected by the issue. Everyone makes mistakes, the fact that they admit this, explain how it happened, and what steps they are taking to fix it say a HUGE amount into the character of the people that run this game on a daily basis.

CCP will have data on who does and who doesn't have the problem.
Also $200 to repair a missing 1kb file with a windows recovery disk? Talk about getting ripped off. Your friend should now phone up the guys he paid $200 and tell them hes found out it can be fixed in 60 seconds with a windows CD and ask for his money back from them too. They completely screwed him i'm sorry, its like replacing the engine in a car because a sparkplug broke.
