Edited by: Coquiton on 12/12/2007 15:53:53 After 2 14-day trials (yes, I used two ) to get used to the game, I decided to upgrade my account.
Now, as a full time player, I'm more serious about how I play. So, what is a good place to look for a corp?
Then, I have two unrelated questions:
- Is "deadspace" just another way of saying "instance"?

- How do podders pilot the ships? I once read in these formus a great deal of detail, but when I looked in the Stories and Backstory, all I could find was bare bones information. Where can I read in detail?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Edit: Oh, and, How can I get my character portrait as my forum picture?

i) not really. deadspaces are very very rarely "locked" requiring a key. they are pretty much always open, accessable via a gate anyone can use. you can probe people out in a deadspace, though it is more difficult than in normal space.
ii) I think pod pilots are neurally linked to their ships. I'm sure there is more info somewhere but I don't know, someone else will help though I bet

Hope you enjoy eve as much as the rest of us.
1: No, deadspaces are not true instances, they're reachable by anyone, but they'll have to find you through the use of scanning.
2: There's some info in the "scientific" articles here: http://www.eve-online.com/background/articles.asp, and in the short stories + eve chronicles. Don't know if there's much more info than that though.

join eve university to learn faster and focus your gameplay, do a corp search for eve uni in the address book or send morningmaniac an evemail
nothing is instanced in eve, cloudy internet space dungeon maybe a better phrase as others can find you and in theory kill you while you're npcing

Linkage
That's one of the backstory for pods in case of you haven't seen it.
Deadspace is a place where you can warp in but only on a specific place (on comparison on regular space you can warp in to any bookmarked location), and where you can't use MWD.

As far as searching for corps goes:
A new corporation advertisement feature was added in the last expansion. I haven't used it personally, so I can't vouch for its usability, but you can find it under the corporations section, advertisements tab.

Great short story covering how the POD works (and some drawbacks):
The Jovian Wet Grave
Deadspaces are a convenient game mechanic that allows CCP to dynamically spawn the mission site. Its covered in the story line that they are warp-free zones; due to their cosmic nature you can't warp straight to them and as such have to use acceleration gates to get there. In practical game mechanics they aren't "instanced", but they don't exist until the spawner actually warps to the gate's location. They CAN be probed out and found, but a ship inside one is some 100x harder to find than one that isn't.
Welcome to EvE! Have fun, fly safe, learn lots and don't get mad when you get ganked The recommendation for Eve university is a good one, it will teach you how to defend yourself in a dangerous world.

Definitely EVE University, their entire purpose is to teach new players the ins and outs of EVE. For additional PvP training afterwards, check out Agony Unleashed (they're not free but worth it from what I've heard).
Quote: Then, I have two unrelated questions:
- Is "deadspace" just another way of saying "instance"?

No actually...granted, it's pretty much impossible to just stumble across a deadspace location, but they aren't instances and can be accessed by other players. Keep this in mind, especially in low-security space.

Capsuleers, or "Pod Pilots" spend the entirety of their time in space connected to the pod via implants. The pod then connects to the ship, allowing the pilot to control it almost completely on their own. Keep in mind, however, that ships also have a crew. Someone has to clean the vents, after all.

I third Eve Uni and the Ivy League. They are a great bunch of people from all walks of life in Eve (yes, even pirates), and they are a great help to newer players.

Welcome to the Eve Forums \o/
now you have information you're no longer a newbie and everything you ever say will be flamed! I'd never do anything like that of course oh no
anyway you just have to wait for your portrait to appear here, some people wait months but it's likely to be quicker than that

Hehe, that was a little joke, some portraits had some strange eyeballs...
Anyways nothing you can do to get your chars pic showing on the forums. All new chars are rendered every once in a while for the forums by CCP, then you automatically get your pic in here. Bit of patience, can take up to a few weeks, but pic will come.

Two more bits of advice.
1) Do NOT trust anyone online only people you know in real life (and can take a baseball bat too if they nick stuff from ya :D)
2) Make sure you have vast quantities of salt available, whenever CCP say something or make an official announcement. make sure you take a pinch of it to keep you safe.

A couple other quick tips for you:
1. Trust is your most valuable asset. Give it out rarely.
2. Your reputation in EVE is incredibly valuable, and you can't rename your character. So steal from someone's corporation and it may haunt you your entire career.
3. Don't ever fly what you can't afford to lose. You're going to disobey this exactly one too many times, but never again after that ---------------- Tarminic - 29 Million SP in pink Forum Warfare |

Good luck out there! If you're looking for a corp I'll send you an evemail with details about a faction based corp that does missions, mining and helps new players.
Your portrait comes in time, I'm not sure if theres a formula to getting it activated.

Thank you for the referral, Tarminic!
You do not have to leave your corp to take an Agony class. There is a class fee involved, but it is reasonable and helps us keep the PvP University running. If you're interested in PvP and would like to get a taste of it, feel free to have a look at the link in my sig and sign up for a PvP Basic class.
