After a month or 2 of no problems, recently my Eve has been crashing frequently to a blue screen with the error message "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".
Let me just stop here and add a little disclaimer, that yes, I have the latest sound/video/BIOS drivers, so DON'T reply telling me to do this. Believe it or not, this is not the end-all-be-all solution to every problem in the universe. There is something else going on and I'm hoping maybe somebody else has had a similar issue and might actually know how to fix it...
Anyway, I've narrowed my problem down to a sound issue - I will bluescreen randomly in 30 min to an hour or more intervals when just flying around doing whatnot, but it seems to go especially crazy when mining, crashing within 5 minutes every time. If I pull the sound card out, I get a message when I try to start eve that no sound is detected, the audio engine will not be started etc, and then I have no problems. This happened with an SB audigy gamer, as well with another audigy (model SB0160, not sure of the name).
As I said it seems fairly certain this is a sound related issue, but if you need my specs for everything else I can post those as well. Any (intelligent) advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Edited by: Eisha on 12/03/2004 19:24:36 I'm getting that exact same failure message on my Blue Screen! It only crashes when in space. As long as I login and never leave the station its fine, as soon as I launch the computer crashes. Come to think of it may only be when warping as well... hmm....
I will try to turn off my sound and see what happens. About 2 or 3 months ago I upgraded from SB live to an SB Audigy 2. Maybe I'll have to put the old Live back in.
I've also replaced all my drivers except for the sound cards. Bios, Via, Graphic, a few others. CCP gave me a huge list of things to try.
" 3. Disabling the audio in Eve could fix this or lowering the hardware acceleration on the soundcard to nil. (Go to control panel, sounds and multimedia (or sounds and audio Devices in XP). On the Audio tab click the Advanced button in the Sound Playback section. Select the Performance tab and set the Hardware acceleration slider to None.) Changing the "audio=1" to "audio=0" in the ...eve\cache\prefs.ini file will disable the sound. 4. Uninstall/reinstall you audio/video drivers. ... Fourth: ------ (You should NOT do these steps here if you are not sure how to do it! You might damage you video card) 1. Remove (add/remove) your Audio/video card (control panel). 2. Turn the computer off. 3. Remove the Audio/video card. 4. Put the Audio/video card into another available slot (the same one has to do if there is no empty one). 5. Turn the computer on. 6. Add (add/remove)your Audio/video card (control panel). 7. Install and update your video card drivers. "
Thats everything involved with the sound card in what they sent me. My next post here might be a huge thank you. :)

It may be a problem with faulty RAM, I get many bsod errors atm due to broken ram, try downloading a program called 'memtest'. It will test your ram for any faults. -Boogles- |

My ram checked out on that and Goldmem as well. :) I did get a mem address at one point in one of the errors, so I've tested the memory pretty heavily.

bingo! ill play around with it some more to see if just lowering it one or 2 notches would also fix it.. the sound isnt TOO bad with 0 acceleration, it just lags a tiny bit and there are some hisses/pops now and then, but definitely tolerable, especially considering i can now mine for more than 30 secs without any hint of blue ;)
thx for the reply Eisha, give it a shot yourself and see if it works

Well, I finally updated my sound card drivers and if fixed the immediat problem. But now I freeze at random and turning off the hardwar acceleration isn't helping. I even tried disabling the sound card. I suspect I now have a conflict with another process, so I'm slowing figureing out how to get rid of them. I start up with 35 processes.
Every now and then it will reboot rather then freeze, wich is bad since I have the auto restart on crash turned off.
I'm glad it help you though. :)

Edited by: Flaze on 15/03/2004 23:49:03 I would look to your windows on BSOD.....not EvE
EvE is demanding on video, sound, ram and processor resources...thus if you have a "well used" install of windows anything, your windows is choking not EvE, you could possibly clean this up buy cleaning up windows itself or reinstalling.
BSOD and windows to me, in win2k and winXP, is windows issues with your program (EvE) and not visa versa....
its just EvE brings out the best in your windows and push's it to its extreme in keeping it running correctly....
we have three box's here all diff hardware and diff OS's.....BSOD hasnt show its ugly face here but you can bet if it does its a windows issue from being old, torn up, poorly managed and just overall windows being windows...
this is just IMHO
maybe it will help maybe it won't

Edited by: Scorpyn on 16/03/2004 08:15:22 What OS do you have? XP? 2k? ME? Something else?
You said you had the latest bios drivers. By that, do you mean the latest chipset drivers or the latest bios? If you don't have the latest bios, it might be a good idea to upgrade, as it has fixed a bluescreen error for a friend of mine with the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL problem.
If would be good with more info than just the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message. What else is there in the message?

Edit : One more thing - if it just appeared out of nowhere, something might be broken.

I have both Chipset and Bios drivers updated. I think its a heat issue. I can play about an hour b4 the first freeze, and the second freeze comes much faster, and then a third and then it reboots. Someone in my corp said they had to replace the CPU paste. So I have a few things I'm gonna try.
1st I'm gonna put down new CPU paste. 2nd I'm gonna drop my sound card 2 the second slot, so that the 1st slot next to the Readeon is empty. 3rd I'm gonn put a blower fan in next to the Graphics card to hopefully pull the heat directly off it.

I have encountered problems before with this error message. At the time it was related to a certain version of nVidia drivers. And to be honest, on another game
Do check into heat issues, as the current generation of graphics cards are known to generate enourmass amounts of heat. --------------------------------------------------

Do all three at the same time, Your computer will love you all the more. I would suggest you blow cool air onto the graphics card rather than pull it off, best to rely on the extractor fans to move hot air out of the case.

Does the creative diagnostics software report the card as being ok?
If the diagnostics locks up and the cards IRQ is above 15 I may have the solution for you.

Ya, the sound card is ok. Thank. The everage temp of the comp is down about 3 degrees now and I had not lock ups. However it is still rebooting. I feel really dumb now cause while I was checking everything with the case open I found the Power Suply fan is bad. So I think I had about 3 difrent issues all pop up at about the same time. So I'm hoping one I repace the power supply the rebooting will stop. I'm half tempted to use it as an excuse to just rebuild a whole new computer. :)

I also have a Audigy sound card. Turned Hardware Acceleration down to basic. Problem solved. No more crash.
Also noticed that when using full hardware acceleration, all EAX effects are blank in the mixer after playing EVE. That is also fixed. Got reasonable good sound. EVE now gives a warning at startup that it can't find hardware accelerated sound. Except for that message, everything works ok.

I've been having a problem where my EAX console crashes if I try to launch it after playing Eve. Audigy 2 with latest driver. Very annoying because I have to reboot if I want to listed to music with EAX on.
