I'm a noob. No question. I'm only a couple of weeks into my full account, but I'm also a lurker. I've spent plenty of time in these forums reading about the dangers of EVE.
Following is my story of how there is nothing like learning a lesson for real.
Just trained myself up to a Thrasher, so I figured I can go ratting in low sec and make a bit more cash. I found a nice quiet .04 system, only half a dozen players, no pod kills in the last 24 hours and only a few jumps from a good trade station. Sweet. So there I am ratting through the system, not bothering anyone, no one bothering me. I've also just started to salvage my wrecks too. I'm watching local to see who could be trouble, when a guy jumps in with a -0.2 sec rating. "Not that bad", thinks me and I put him out of mind.
Then he jumps into my belt about ten minutes later and target locks me within seconds. I panic, and go to warp out, but my Thrasher is waaaayyy slower than the Rifter I'd got used to, and that he happens to be flying. So before I know it I'm warp jammed and webbified and getting my arsed kicked. I had built a decent passive sheild tank for ratting so I was holding on and once I got my guns on him, it was looking close for a minute..... Once he got through my shields though, Armor and Structure was gone in a flash, he waves goodbye, and I'm flying my pod home to get a new ship.
Typical noob mistakes, I hear you thinking. Well, here's where it gets so much more entertaining.
I buy myself ANOTHER Thrasher, kit it out(a bit better this time), and go back to the SAME system to keep ratting. I'm going along nice and happy, kill rats, salvage, repeat. When the SAME GUY shows up again and repeats his earlier assualt. Again, I can't go anywhere because I'm jammed and webbed, but this time, I'm winning!!! Awesome. My build is much better than before, I'm still taking damage, but I'm dishing out much more than I was, and it's ripping through his defence. It takes a while, but eventually he's in Structure, I've still got half my sheilds, so he warps out.
I WON!!!!!!!
HA HA, I'M THE CHAMPION!!! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Take THAT, you pirate bastard!!! Your rum is MINE now!!!
And such juvenile carrying on. This is two in the morning for me, so I'm out of my chair, dancing about, WOOOOOOO. You can imagine it, I'm sure.
But I calm down soon enough and go back to the wrecks I was salvaging. Yes, that's right. I CONTINUE salvaging the SAME wrecks in the SAME belt....... I'm sure can see where this is going.
What do you do if you can't quite beat someone? He's gone to a station, repaired, then rearmed to take advantage of my defensive holes and warped straight back in. Lock, web, jam, daka-daka, pewpew, and I'm in my pod for the second time in as many hours.
Long story short, low-sec is a lot more brutal than I thought it would be, but that's not going to keep me away. I'll remember you Regalnik, and I'm looking forward to finding you in a quiet .03 belt somewhere so I can get my revenge. I know you'll still probably kill me, but I'm willing to die. It makes it more fun.
That's the story of my first pvp encounter, hope you get a kick out of it. See you spaceside.
tl:dr Noob got pwnd. Twice. By the same dude. Lulz.

Edited by: Rachel Vend on 13/12/2007 06:20:19 You got lucky.
Usually pirates/gankers will fly with a fleet of battleships to kill a shuttle (shuttles are very deadly and require lots of players to kill)
You had a pretty even fight, this is rare in EVE.

You're flying in some sucky lowsec if fair fights are that rare. |

I just don't tell the rest of the gang when I warp out to a belt and get into a 1vs1 (A few people have figured it out and started following me whenever I warp... damn kill mail *****s)
But umm... When not ganking I'd much rather fly a small ship and see what kind of unbalanced fight I can get myself into. Ran through a squad of 3 Ares a Firetail and a Vaga four times the other day in a stabber, may not have gotten a kill but it was damn funny watching them fail at locking down a ship half as fast
To the OP... keep the good atitude, but fit a scram next time and you'll have a nice revenge story ____________________ Hi. I'm not an alt :)

Nice story. Funnily enough I've made plenty of in-game friends this way. But yeah as others have been saying continous fights like these are pretty rare as usually one side will bring friends sooner or later. This shouldn't deter you though as the one amazing fight you get every now and then more than makes up for all the bad ones. This is Eve's carrot-on-a-stick for most people :)

ah the Thrasher is a great little ship, I know I used to have fun in mine.
You should try contacting Agony Unleased they have classes where they use frigs and destroyers, its a laugh and it teaches you a little about pvp and how to move around in 0.0 and lowsec.

Enjoyable read. :)
Although to be honest, if he warped out and you couldn't stop him from doing so to blow him up... technically thats a draw. ;)
Good to see this kind of spirit though, you'll probably do very well in EvE.

There's no such thing as a nice quiet 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, or 0.1 system. They don't exist, they may appear to be safe...

Second mistake you made, even a character with high sec status can and will kill you. Lots of pirates have high or neutral sec status.

Alright, I've got a question for you.
I was in low-sec again last night, the same system again actually , when I see a guy pop up in local with a -2.0 sec rating and a bounty. My hold was nearly full with salvage, so I just warped straight to station rather than risk anything.
In the back of my mind though, I'm thinking, "Hmmmm. That's a whole million ISK. For only one kill. I've got insurance. Wouldn't cost too much to replace my Rifter. It'd be worth a shot. Wouldn't it?"
But, I want to trade in EVE as well. I can't have Concord chase me every time I enter high-sec. What I'd like to know is how does killing pirates affect my sec rating? Can I just fly around in low-sec and attack anyone with a bounty? Or should I try to bait them into firing the first shot, so I'm free to retaliate?

Basicly, if they aren't flashing red and you shoot first you will lose some sec status. But if they shoot first then you are allowed to defend yourself without losing sec status. Anybody who is flashing red is kill on sight for anyone
However, even if you do lose sec status, you can continue to enter all of high sec until you reach -2.0 (I think)

It's not the shuttle that's dangerous, it's the fleet of Templars that it uses - an Amarrian fighter frequently assigned to shuttles. THough I hear they don't tank very well.

Should have come back with a webber+scram + whatever else for your midslots.
I don't know the trasher fittings.
I do know that Rifters rely on speed, and once webbed, as with most frigates, they become, relatively, easy pickings.
Also remember to fly in a straight line away from him to keep his transversal speed as low as possible in comparison to your ship, in order to land hits easier (if you are using turrets anyways).
Even if the rifter goes 1km/s with AB (most use AB not MWD), he'll still get yanked down to 100m/s with a proper webber, which makes him unable to orbit you much if you are moving in the opposite direction. Hence he "lags" behind, and gives your turrets are more prudent target.
There are many if's and but's around 1v1 fights, but as a general rule of thumb, to overcome a frigate, you need to 1) slow him down, and 2) lower his transversal speed.
Also worth noting, learning how all the ships are kitted and function, not just the one you fly, will help you a long way when it comes to PvP.
Good read though. Shame you didn't get to pop him the second time :) -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

Hey Ironnight! How's it going? Thanks for the referral.
Dessys can be really powerful; they pack a punch but are paper thin. Agony loves dessys, because a new player can become really effective in them within a month of starting Eve. This story brings back the days when I was starting out, flying Cormorants around... *memories...*
The PvP University covers destroyers in detail in our PvP Wolfpacks class. Feel free to have a look at the link in my sig, and PM me if you have any questions.
