So im new, obviously, and i like the idea of these ships over the slow lumbering battleships. And i have a few questions to ask.
1. Whats the difference between an inty and an Assault frig?
2. Whats the general strategy with them solo?
3. which skill set to start, special forces or soldier?
4. which races ships are best in each category?
5. Is it worth it?

2. Whats the general strategy with them solo? You take Assault Frigs nice and slow, where as interceptors need to be fast to get the job done.
3. which skill set to start, special forces or soldier? whatever you want, just make sure you have your racial frigate skill as high as you can, same for your weapon system.
4. which races ships are best in each category? Ask Michael Jackson.
5. Is it worth it? Michael Jackson probably thinks so, he got away with it.

Assault frigs are slow, bulky and suck in various degrees, ranging from the not so terrible Ishkur to the very pathetic Hawk. One of them has just a single midslot, you won't believe it. Interceptors are, in fact, quite good, and you will be needed in groups to tackle with them. Some are preety solo-capable too.

With assault frigs, it's killing the little frigates and destroyers you see on scanner. Unless you're flying a Hawk, in which case it's finding the lousier frigates on scanner and trying to kill them. You can go for a cruiser, but it involves a lot of prayer that the pilot of the cruiser doesn't know what he's doing, since you're betting 20M on it.
Inteceptors: stay out of webrange. Use long range guns. Or you can use a blaster-taranis, but they tend to die a lot.

Doesn't matter. You'll need to train up about 1.3M worth of nav skills anyway, plus T2 small guns of the race you're looking for plus the racial frigate to V plus the fitting skills, cap skills and all other supporting skills. Small ships can be skill hogs.

Depends. All races have good and valid interceptors, but personally I'm planning to go for a Malediciton (even though I can fly Minmatar interceptors right now) eventually.

Small ship combat is the most fun you can have in EvE. It's worth it.
I fly Rifters a lot for that, but I've also flown Jaguars now and then with varying success (the last one which I had menaged to not only pay itself off but even make ISK off kills, which was a first).
Before I got into piracy and was mostly low-sec ratting, I did a fair bit of fighting in AFs until I realised what I can and can't take, and I've lost a fair bit of them as result. It is a relatively expensive way of getting the hang of things, though.

I would say soldier is best. Going soldier you almost instantly have the t2 weapon systems for your racial frigs.

1. Whats the difference between an inty and an Assault frig?
'ceptors are quick with next to no tank, Assaults can tank and are generally pretty slow (but their pretty mixed bag of half-decent, sort of ok and crap)
2. Whats the general strategy with them solo?
Ceptors: Orbit at high speed out of web range, fire long range weapons till you your target goes boom. Run away if it goes pear shaped.
3. which skill set to start, special forces or soldier?
Soldier
4. which races ships are best in each category?
cal Crow - Can't really go wrong with these as missiles don't have tracking issues. min Claw - Really fast, seems to do decent dmg but I haven't used my one much gal taranis - lots of dmg but slow, get killed a lot amarr - never used them

For Amarr - which have pretty good AFs and ceptors in general:
AF: Vengeance Pros - the best tanking frig in the game - rockets do OK dmg, are capless and have no tracking issues - good slot layout for PvP (unlike the Retribution) Cons - slow - not unlike any other AF really - Rockets have limited range, unless you use javs which make you even slower
Ceptors - Both good in their role. Malediction Pros - Fast like any other - Has missile hardpoints - Has nice dmg with rockets - Nice slot layout
Cons - Rockets have limited range, unless you use javs which make you even slower
Crusader - Faaaaast - Good dmg dealer with greater range flexibility than "better" dmg dealers. - Ok slot layout (at least it can scramble)
Cons - So fast that lasers can have some issues tracking, no worse than other races tho. - Lasers use up cap pretty fast even with good skills.

Well, nothing "pays" out of the box. You need to practice with them, and surely you will lose them...often. Needs experience to make em "profitable". You can get some thrills n fun for sure. I am he, the bornless one

The crusader is sweet with dual light beams, I found that even orbiting at 5km/s at a 20km orbit I get good hits on targets. It's fast enough to make sure nothing escapes, though the capacitor does run out eventually.
