Okay, I've decided I'm going to PvP primarily in thoraxes for the time being as it's the best ship I can afford to lose at this point. For the highs I'm reduced to using 5x medium electrons as I do not have AWU learned yet (working on it tho). I will upgrade to ions eventually after training that skill.
The real question for right now is the mids and lows. With only 3 mids it cannot fit the essential blaster boat combination of MWD+scram+web+injector. When running with a tackler this is not an issue as I just drop the scram but without a dedicated tackler I have a hard time deciding what to drop. Any advice?
And I'm still not quite sure how to tank a thorax either. Plate it? MAR+hardeners? I think I will probably go with 1x MAR II, 1x DCU II, 1x exp hardener, 1x EANM, and 1x MFS unless someone can point me out a better setup. I'm not worried about rigging it as it is first and foremost a throwaway PvP ship for someone on a tight budget for now.
Can't use ECM drones yet but will begin working on that after I've trained up AWU to the point where i can replace those electrons with ions. For now its 5x hammerheads.
So, to sum it all up:
HIGHS 5x Named Electron blasters
MIDS 1x MWD 1x Named Web 1x Injector 1x Scram (which one to drop for no tackler work? not sure yet)
LOWS 1x MAR II 1x DCU II 1x EANM 1x Exp Hardener 1x Mag Field Stab
any suggestions?

I have been playing with the thorax too, I could not get a setup to work using the MAR. It gimped my DPS and i was finding that I was dying before I had even run through 2 cycles ( Some fights the other guy was close o popping too, others were bad choice of target. )
After reading alot of posts I gave the "Buffer Rax" a go, I am not saying its a dead cert killer, but its a scary ship.
5 x heavy neutron blaster ---------------------- MWD Web Scram ---------------------- DCII <----- Essential
Rest of lows are a combination of Mag stabs and fitting for guns and the biggest plate you can fit. ( all dependant on your current skills ofc )
If you are flush put some trimark pumps on there too. The fitting is a little funny to look at, and I admit you need some fundamantal skills before it will begin to work ( power grid mainly )
The philosophy of this fit speaks for itself, I have had alot of fun with this ship

Because of the stated 3 midslots, you're right, cap can be a problem. The Thorax has always been a very short battle fighter because of that but due to bonuses and drones has alot of serious smash potential for a cruiser.
In the mids you'll likely want to keep the MWD + Webber + Cap injector if you're not having to tackle for yourself. The webber will let you hit more often / accurately, while some one else holds the warp scram. Alternatively you can run MWD, Cap Injector, and a Tracking Enhancer (Enhanced tracking script) if some one is tackiling for you. Same effect with the accuracy/damage concept.
I personally tend to either plate or gank my Thoraxes, and with out a view of skills or numbers I have no idea about your lows. Looks like your trying to go for resistence based defences. Whats your left over PG and cpu with that set up ? Id personally drop the Mag Stab for more tank in this case, but again thats just my preference.
As to the ECM drones, while they can be usefull, I've always found Hammerhead and Hammerhead IIS to be better in my rax. It doesnt get a drone bonus but the combination of 5 baslters + 5 medium drones melts most other cruisers (Maller and rupture being the only real exceptions)
That aside for a newer (? maybe just low income, happens to us all) player you seem to have a good grasp on things mate. Get it blown up a few times and tweak the fittings every time for whatever seemed more usefull to your styles and situations and your working prototype fittings wil lsort themselves out.

For solo work you prolly would want to set her up like a rupture tank-wise.
1600 mm plate dcu eanm 2 damage mods
Then for your mids.
MWD Web Scram
As long as you keep a repper in the cargo to fix yourself in station after a fight you should be fine.

1600 plated rupture can still use medium 180 mm ACs and take advantage of its bonuses. 1600 plated Thorax wont fit 5 eletrons with out some serious fitting skills, if at all, which the player has already stated he doesnt have. 1600 plated thoraxes typically use small nuetron IIs as the small T2 with void vs medium T1 with antimatter isnt a huge damage difference.

Fitting skills currently: Weapon Upgrades IV Engineering V Electronics IV Energy Systems Operation IV Energy Management III
Currently training WU to V, then will get AWU.
I'm at work right now and can't quite tell you how much PG/CPU my fitted thorax has but when I get home I'll put it up. Thanks for the help =)

The Thorax is hard to fit, period. I'm also a young player, and I love this ship. I actually think it's a great platform to learn to PVP. That said, the trouble is usually the PG, and the least obvious part is always the tank. This week I'm doing this:
HIGH: 5 modal ions w/ Navy AM MIDS: MWD/90% web/scram or disruptor, etc. (or sometimes 2 90% webs, depending on my mood) LOWS: DCU II, 2x Magnetic Vortex, 400mm RT, 800mm RT plate
5 Hammerhead Is (T2 ASAP, then maybe I'll experiment with some ECM drones?)
If my calculations are correct, the blasters should come in around 200 DPS, with the drones adding another 40 or 50. ~5400 Armor HP. If I can't win fast, I'm not going to win at all in a Thorax. That seems to be the philosophy for a character with my skills and this ship. I've played around with setups using repairers, and I just don't see the Thorax being in an engagement where repairing on the battlefield is going to really help when the chips are down...
I could fit a small armor repairer II or a medium armor repairer instead of the 400mm plate, but again, not sure it would matter. Also, with repairers, cap becomes a major issue and it becomes necessary to fit a cap booster. Once all that comes into play, I have to step down to electrons. With my skills, fitting with electrons seems to just kind of make the whole thing a little luke warm...
As someone pointed out before, it would take some serious skills to fit a repairer and run it well. For a character my [our] age, that's not an option, I don't think.
I've experimented with electrons, 800mm plate, ANP IIs, etc. It's a good thing the Thorax is not insanely expensive - learning doesn't come cheap in Eve. :-)

For solo thorax'ness I use:
3xIons 2x Neutrons MWD, web, point 400mm plate, DCU, 3x magstab.
Works with all T1, named, or T2 gear.
Puts out some nice DPS even with T1 gear you can insta-pop frigates and kill other cruisers before they even hit your armor.

Edited by: Arcon Telf on 15/12/2007 01:24:33 Edited by: Arcon Telf on 15/12/2007 01:21:09 I could easily be wrong, but in my calculations I haven't noticed a substantial difference in DPS between a full rack of Ions and a rack of Ions mixed with Neutrons - or even a full rack of Neutrons. The ROF on the Neutrons is so slow...comments?
Even going from a full rack of electrons to ions only yields me an increase of ~15 DPS. Maybe I'm reconsidering my statement about electrons being 'luke warm'...

Okay, with my current skills the ship has nearly 200PG left and the CPU is maxed.
Looks like HIGHS 5x named med electron 1 (anode right now)
MIDS Y8 MWD X5 Web Fleeting Disruptor (which i switch out for a cap booster when running with a tackler)
LOWS MAR II Active Explosive Hardener DC II Named EANM MFS II
So apparently my highs and mids are just fine as is (though I will try that tracking computer in place of web next time I run with a tackler), Lows, general consensus seems to be that I should drop the MAR for something passive, or sacrifice tank for more gank (MFS's). You guys are being really helpful. Any other suggestions?

Ditch the rep, add a plate. Even with MWD and no injector, your natural cap recharge should be able to sustain web + 7.5km scram + five blasters, and plates take no cap. After that, it's a mix of medium blasters (light blaster setups are better used on the Vexor), resist mods, and magstabs.

t1 gank fittings don't work that well, so call me crazy, but a light neutron dual rep injected 800mm plate rax will work better. Unless you work in gangs, where you might as well fit neutrons, mag stabs, a dc and nanofibers.

ok the thorax:
Does not require a capbooster, go for web or you must have some minmatar webbingships in the gang. NEVER fit a tracking enhancer or tracking comp on a thorax. And i mean NEVER.
They boost optimal. Now whats the gun with the shortest optimal in the game? They boost tracking and what ship is 1 km from his enemies while keeping the target webbed? Exactly. Waste of slots.
You dont have to go for full gank. Balance it: Maybe a 800mm plate + ion II or even a 1600mm plate + RCU II + electron II. 1.9 rof dealing up to 300 wrecking. Thats hurts.
Add some medium ECM drones or valks/hammerheads if you have the cash. You have a good understanding off the thoughts behind the thorax. A huge damage - money spend ratio. No point sinking 20 mil in this ship.
These parts are worthy of being T2 imo: T2 damage control, T2 guns, T2 web, T2 magstabs. Maybe T2 warpdisrupter or fleeting warp disrupter (lowest capusage). _________________________________________________ Breetime

Ok: Small neutrons is something i used in 2004/begin 2005. It was when my thorax has a 2000m3 dronebay and i launched 8 ogre's. This is not a valuable setup anymore.
If you are gonna use small guns, use a vexor, serieusly. btw those arent 10 mil fittings, those are 25-30 mil fittings and they dont improve the survivibility.
The lows on the first thorax can be improved a lot. Allways use a DCU, doesnt matter how plated it is. Allways use a damagemod. You cannot fly a thorax without a damagemod if you are going blasterstyle.
A gank setup does not use electron. Use Ion + 800mm plate. I have seen worse setups, but there is still much room for improvement imo. _________________________________________________ Breetime

Youll want tech 2 on there ASAP (the thorax is more highly skilled than the Vexor) but i swear by a very similar setup to that. It works great, for gangs and it shines in solo work too.
The EANM is the only slightly doubtful bit. Though it will work you are often better off patching the Exp hole given how fotm minmitar are but that i damned good setup. -----------------

It's great to see so many "young" players taking an interest in the Thorax. I have 20m SP and it is still my ship of choice in many situations.
My gang setup: Damage Control Unit 3x Magnetic Field Stabilizer Reactor Control Unit
10mn Microwarpdrive Stasis Webifier Warp Disruptor
5x Heavy Neutron Blasters
If you can use ECM drones, go for it, if not, you can't go wrong with Hammerheads.
Solo setup:
800mm Plate 2x EANM Damage Control Magnetic Field Stabilizer
10mn Microwarpdrive Stasis Webifier Warp Disruptor
4x Heavy Ion Blasters 1x Heavy Electron Blaster
For solo jobs it is highly recommended that you use ECM drones. As somebody already mentioned, fitting a repper on a thorax is pretty pointless. A small repairer does basically nothing, and a medium will cap you out in 2-3 cycles. Just keep one in you hold and repair after the fight. Keep in mind when looking at these setups that I have Advanced Weapons Upgrades to level 4, so you may need to adjust your setups accordingly. ______________________________________________________________________________________

t2 ammo is crap due to the penalties it has. Use faction, very similar in all most respects, without any penalty. ______________________________________________________________________________________
