Edited by: Benco97 on 16/12/2007 14:41:09 Hello all, No, not another Cheese related topic this time. I was just wondering if anyone could help shed some light on this recurring dream I've been having for about the past week.
I'm walking through some sort of tunnel network underground, everything feels fine and I'd say I'm in a "normal" mood, you know? Eventually I'll come to a room which is a junction, there is one tunnel in each of the four walls. Two of these tunnels are blocked off with some sort of rusty bars. I always decide to stay in that room for a little while before moving on but after a little while of being in there a feeling of terrible dread comes over me and I can hear something but not understand what it is. I look down the tunnels which are barred but see nothing until I shine my torch down one at which point I see what looks like a person but lacking definition. It is standing some distance down the tunnel. It starts coming towards me and I freak out, it doesn't LOOK bad but I can just feel deep down that it's one of those bad things, like something instinctual is saying "Don't go anywhere NEAR that thing, Run now"
I turn and try to run down the tunnel I came in through but my movements are sluggish and useless, it's like my body is going in slow motion but my brain isn't. The thing is suddenly behind me ( I don't know how it gets through the bars), it grabs me and turns me around and I can't stop it. It holds my shoulders and seems to look into my eyes. It's done nothing bad to me but I KNOW, I just KNOW it's something really really bad.. you know? After it's looked at me for a while I sense that something is about to happen and then I wake up terrified.
I can recall this with such detail because this has happened to me every night for the last week, changing my sleeping habits hasn't helped. Can anyone help? (I've also posted this on another website but I doubt I'll get much help there)
*Edit* - and no, it's not a nightmare brought on by eating cheese, I've not been eating much this week and certainly not before I go to sleep.

i cant really tell you much about the nature of your dream. i can tell you that the fear you are feeling happens to me a lot. sometimes it happens and im not completely asleep yet and the dread starts to wash over me. i start seeing people in my mirrors, windows, dark areas in the room or feel like their is something there.
also the same sluggish or slow movements happen to me also. except for my eyes they seem to move just fine.
now i saw a show recently on the discovery channel the explained the nature of these dreams and it said its just the over stimulation of the fear glad thing in your brain. that and before you go to sleep your body releases a chemical which kinda paralyzes you so you dont act upon your dreams. the combo of these two things is what gives you that kind of nightmare.

Edited by: Auhdrayn on 16/12/2007 15:14:22 "I came in through but my movements are sluggish and useless, it's like my body is going in slow motion but my brain isn't. " i think this part is same in every nightmare, it used to happen to me too, it's a horrible feeling as you probly know. I think you should sit down and try to find the source of these things. If you think enough, you can find EVERY symbol's source in a dream, for example, if you saw a rat running downhill then hitting a wall, it can be because you saw a dead roadkill rat while driving, then you noticed you was driving to a wall while going downhill or something, and just slowed down. But it wasn't going to crash or anything, you just wanted to make sure your brakes were working before needing to slow down when you should. So you didn't think about all of these and just skipped since no problem happened, but in your mind somewhere, something went "what if brakes didn't work?" then in your dream your mind tries the "what if" this is mostly how my dreams happen i think. Just think about what the things in your dream could mean, it's probly something that happened in your daily life but you never thought about it since it wasn't serious. I think only two things enter into someone's dream. Not serious things that would go serious. and REALLY serious things, like surviving a plane crash or something.

Quote:
Tunnel - A symbol that might be interpreted as meaning that you are coming out of depression or a time of anxiety in your life. From HyperDictionary.com Tunnel Seeing a tunnel in your dream, represents the vagina, womb, and birth. Thus it may refer to a need for security and nurturance. Dreaming that you are going through a tunnel, suggests that you are exploring aspects of your unconscious. You are opening yourself to a brand new awareness. Alternatively, it indicates your limited perspective. Seeing the light at the end of a tunnel, symbolizes hope.
So make of that what you will. It's your brain after all. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I've experienced that too. If you look on the bright side though, if that wasn't the case you would wake up like I did once.
So I'm driving around in the city I live in in this big ass trailer truck when I have to stop at some traffic lights. All of a sudden my inflatable truck starts to deflate, until all the air is gone and it's completely flat. Anyways, I start blowing air into it when this man walks up to the back end of the deflated truck. He takes a few more steps so now he's standing on top of it. When I see what he's doing I get slightly annoyed because he's hindering the air flow. I ask him to step off the truck but he doesn't even react. He just stands there, staring at me. So I start getting angry, I mean wth, how am I supposed to be able to blow air into my truck if he's standing on it. I tell him to get off my truck. He doesn't move. So I walk up to him and tell him to get the **** off of my truck and he just says "No". I snap and punch him as hard as I can in the face. Got damnit, that hurt. I think as I wake up realizing I just hit my fist as hard as I could in the wall next to my bed. My knuckles even started bleeding a bit.
I've never even driven a truck, nor do I want to and I don't fight. Wth

This might awnser your question
I once had a period where I would dream about being on the run for no reason at all and moving through areas with things I know from RL, but ordered in a way that did not make any sense at all. Like having the church of the village I live in next to a cinema I regularly visit in a city nearby next to a building site I once saw in Italy when on a holiday...
Sometimes I got control over my movement wich was pretty awesome, I would freerun all over the place and do stuff like you see in those ninja movies where they float walk on water, or jump from building to building over huge distances.
Having control over your dream appartently is called Lucid dreaming It's great :)

Yeah its not all to do with sex, sleep is when your body takes in everything thats happened from the past day/week. After watching Private Ryan I dreamt about tanks, though if I told that to a freudian they'd probably be able to come up with some perverted BS. _______________________________________________ EVE is dying, we are all doomed...

The problem with dreams is you have to work out the symbology for yourself. Forget the 'If you dream about this, that will happen.' that's nothing but hocus pocus BS.
The brain works in symbols at it's most basic, those symbols are very much set by your life experiances as you grow up, and are different for us all.
For example, Benco we could have exactly the same dream, say about getting on a plane and flying. Now I love flying, it's an adventure, I've actually just got my PPL. But for you, the thought of flying might fill you with dread. So for me, while it would be a dream that is about something good, something I enjoy, for you it would be a dream about your fears.
The trick is you have to work it out for yourself, you need to work out which ellement of the dream means what for you.
Oh, and don't focus on the slow motion running through treacle effect when you are in a scary part of your dream, that's actually a physical thing.
When you are asleep your brain sort of semi-disconects from your body, so as to stop you jumping up and running about for real, or beating your poor partner to crap.
Try and get a good book on proper psychological dream interpretation, but not the mystical mumbo jumbo

Quote: Chase dreams often stem from feelings of anxiety in your walking life. The way we respond to anxiety and pressure in real life is typically manifested as a chase dream. Running is an instinctive response to physical threats in our environment. Often in these dream scenarios, you are being pursued by some attacker, who wants to hurt or possibly kill you. You are running away, hiding, or trying to outwit your pursuer. Chase dreams may represent your way of coping with fears, stress or various situations in your waking life. Instead of confronting the situation, you are running away and avoiding it.Ask yourself who is the one chasing you and you may gain some understanding and insight on the source of your fears and pressure.
The pursuer or attacker who is chasing you in your dream may also represent a part of yourself. Your own feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, and possibly love, can assume the appearance of threatening figure. You may be projecting these feelings onto the unknown chaser. Next time you have a chase dream, turn around and confront your pursuer. Ask them why they are chasing you.
One may be consumed by their own anger, jealousy, love, or self-destructive behavior. For example, you may be drinking too much or exhibiting open hostility toward others around you. You may subconsciously be threatened by these actions which have been jeopardizing your relationships and/or career. Your dreams are a way of calling attention to these self-destructive actions.
A more direct analysis of chase dreams is the fear of being attacked. Such dreams are more common among women than men, who may feel physically vulnerable in the urban environment. These dreams are inspired by fears of violence and sexual assault in which we are so over-exposed from the media. The violence that the media portrays magnifies our fears and how at risk we all are.
I get a lot of these myself, OR I end up being the chaser and my skin looks like I've got leprecy. I'll keep an eye out for the tunnels and darkness as both have a meaning that is not vagina. I'd have to say 95% of my are dark/nighttime. ___________________________

Quote: Most dreams contain messages that serve to teach us something about ourselves. Unfortunately many a times we forget what we dream about as we go about our daily routine. With recurring dreams, the message may be so important and/or powerful that it just will not go away. The frequent repetition of such dreams forces you to pay attention and confront the dream. The dream is trying desperately to tell you something. Such dreams are often nightmarish or frightening in their content, which also helps you to take notice and pay attention to them.
Recurring dreams are quite common and are often triggered by a certain life situation or a problem that keeps coming back again and again. These dreams may recur daily, once a week, or once a month, but whatever the frequency, there is little variation in the dream content itself. It usually points to a personal weakness, fear, or your inability to cope with something in your life - past or present.
The repetitive patterns in your dream can reveal some of the most valuable information on yourself. It may point to a conflict, situation or matter in your waking life that remains unresolved or unsettled. Or some urgent underlying message in your unconscious is demanding to be understood.
Following are some tips in overcoming your recurring dreams.
1. In understanding your recurring dream, you must be willing to accept some sort of change or undergo a transformation.
2. You must be willing to look within yourself and confront whatever you may find no matter how difficult it my be.
3. You must be able to look at the dream from an objective point of view. Try to get pass the emotional and reactive elements of the dream and get down to the symbolic images. Many times dreams are masked by elements that are disturbing preventing you to delve any deeper. This is a defense mechanism that your unconscious may be putting up.
4. Be patient. Do not get discourage if these dreams still recur even after you thought you have come to understand them.
5. Learn to accept yourself truly and fully.
Often times, once you discover what your recurring dream is trying to tell you, these dreams will change or altogether disappear.

night effect
Quote:
To have a dream that takes place at night, represents some major setbacks and obstacles in achieving your goals. There are some issues in your life that you are facing that are not too clear. You should put the issues aside so you can clear your head before coming back to it. Alternatively, night may be synonymous with death, rebirth and new beginnings.
Tunnel (not sexual)
Quote: To dream that you are going through a tunnel, suggests that you are exploring aspects of your unconscious. You are opening yourself to a brand new awareness. Alternatively, it indicates your limited perspective.
Darkness
Quote: To dream that darkness comes upon you, signifies failure in work you may attempt. Darkness is synonymous with the ignorance, unconscious, evil, death, and fear of the unknown. You will overcome your failure if the sun breaks through the darkness.
To dream that you cannot find someone in the darkness, signifies that you need to keep your temper in check. You have the tendency to let your emotions get out of control and lose your temper.
To dream that you are lost in the darkness, denotes feelings of desperation, depression, or insecurity.
To dream that you are groping around in the darkness, symbolizes that you have insufficient information to make a clear decision. Do your research and do not rush into making choices.

So, to get back on topic a little, do you think maybe I should try to confront the thing in my dreams rather than run away? I don't want to fall into a coma and be held captive by my brain ;.;

You may laugh but actualy it can happen, I don't know if you've ever dreamed of falling but its been proven that if you hit the bottom before you manage to wake up then you can enter comatosis. Our minds are fragile things and their implications should not be underestimated.

I rarely remember my dreams, but the ones I do are FRACKING AWESOME!
In one, I was a sort of JC Denton type character being chased around by an angry mob who thought my augmentations were the work of the devil or something. Anyway I kicked all their fundamentalist arses. Psychobabble: it must be because of my general disdain for luddites.
In another, a black hole had entered the solar system and was eating up planets one at a time. By the time it was passing over earth, the tidal effects had flooded some parts of the world with sea water, and drained the oceans in other parts. The black hole then moved away and the water came rushing back in an awesome CGI tsunami. The status quo didn't last long though, cos now the earth was hurtling away from the sun and was about to get very very cold. It was okay though cos I had a geothermally powered bunker and a few spacesuits. Psychobabble: it's a prophetic dream! We're all doomed! AAAAAAHHHHH!!!
There was another where I was outside my parents house where I grew up, but everything was altered in some way. Like the apple tree at the back now had antlers instead of branches and leaves (WTF?). Anyway, it was night time and I couldn't find a way into the house. Then I suddenly freaked out for no reason at all. I had imagined something dark coming towards me from the path out the front, but I hadn't seen or heard anything. Started screaming my lungs out anyway. Woke up in cold sweats, said to myself "that was SO AWESOME!!" and promptly went back to sleep. Psychobabble: Insecure environment/situation with desire to return to normallity. I think it was just after I left home.
I was once being attacked by man-sized mosquitos with a group of friends. We'd barracaded ourselves in a petrol station shop. Then I woke up, said to myself "aaah it's okay, it's just a dream", went back to sleep into the exact same dream and told all my friends there "it's only a dream, you can all wake up at any time!". Psychobabble: I HATE INSECTS!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------

Try to figure out why you're afraid of it. Don't run away. Fight it only if it attacks you, but if you do need to fight it then don't hold back.

Interesting. Never happened to me. I've noticed that I've held my breath when falling into water though.

If the dream happens again tonight and I can fight back then trust me I fully intend on going all Bruce Lee on it's vague nondescript ass. I may try to talk as it's coming toward me but once that thing touches me discussion time is over. Wish me luck ;p

I've never had a dream like that. In fact, most of my nightmares consist of me being the evil trying to kill the innocents...
When I was 7, I had a dream I was the devil and seduced women into bed only to turn into a giant serpent and eat them...
Also, my birthday is June 6th...last year it was 6/6/06 (666) O_O

If it is a vague fear but no less frightening, something which cannot be placed. Then apparently this can be traced to the gland in your brain responsible for releasing the chemicals that induce this fear. More often than not normal nightmares can be attributed to stress and will usually diminish over time once your real life issues have been resolved.
I used to suffer from Night Terrors when I was younger. They would come and go in spells of several weeks for about 5 years. Going to bed at night was hell. Will I wake up to have someone looking at me again? Will I wake up hearing my name over and over? The description of your fear is pretty accurate to most typical nightmare fears. However once awake my building fear would begin to coalesce into audible and visual fears.
I remember waking with an unspoken intense fear. I walked out of my room and decided to go downstairs. My mother was still awake. However half way down the stairs I could hear snickering coming from the foot of the stairs, just around the bend. Panic froze me to the spot and I stared rigid at the stairs as they bent round. I must have sat there for 5minutes. The sweat was pouring from me. When I decided to go back to bed I began hearing the same laughter from behind me too, from my bedroom. I canÆt begin to describe the shear scale of the panic I felt as I sat trapped in the middle of the stairs. I tried desperately to keep my eye on each source which only escalated my fear.
I swear if an old person was in the same straights it would be possible for them to have a heart attack because my heart was pounding.
I would sometimes awaken to a faceless stranger leaning over me soundlessly. I would be unable to move frozen rigid. The worst one was when I had some tall thing standing next to me. I could only make out a blur in my peripheral vision but he kept leaning in close so his blurred face was about 30cm from mine. It would just sit there then move back up then always when I least expected it, it would come back down and peer again. The features seemed to change and blur when I looked from the mouth to the eyes and back to the mouth it would be different.
More often than not I wouldnÆt remember what happened other than the fact I had had one. But when I did remember I wished I didnÆt. The only thing in common with every single one of these æepisodesÆ was the pure sense of fear involved and a vague impression of great speed and fast moving mechanical devices. [sounds weird I know] These æpistonsÆ IÆll call them would pound and grind so fast and so mercilessly on and on and on never ending they kept crushing and grinding. It is this feeling I would always have with me even when I couldnÆt remember anything else.
To this day despite not suffering from them anymoreÆ I still fear having that feeling again and despite being a very rational person not prone to whimsical flights of fancy I believe IÆll die being crushed to death. And now having invoked all those old memories I look forward to going to bed tonight. IÆm getting a cold shiver now thinking of those damn pistons!

I had a dream like that when I was like 9. I remember I was next to a plexiglass building and I was jumping around on some boards while some people I've never seen before were talking.
Years later in high school our Horticulture class was assigned to clean up the greenhouse and get it running again so we all went out to clean it and at one point in time I found myself behind the greenhouse jumping on some boards while some classmates talked. ___________________________

I wake up with sleep paralysis quite a bit.
That 5-10 seconds where you can't move anything but your eyeballs is quite frightening.
I struggle and struggle to move, then finally my arm moves, or my head, etc...
Some nights this happens to me 5-6 times a night... Sucks...

What happened is probably that your determination to overcome the fear prevented the fear from appearing in the first place.
If it does happen again, make sure to not accept the fear.
