I hear some skills are essential for amarr and must be trained to LV5.

I suggest every skill at V, even minmatar battleship. Because you're only a great pvper if you think every ship needs 50 months of training and 30 skills at V to be flown (especially t1 ships).
edit: Also, you're not a real pvper if you havent posted a setup with faction mods here.

Apart from maybe amarr BS V, those skills really are what you need to excel as an amarr BS pilot. Sure, you could make due with AWU 4, without sentries, using best named lasers, etc. but if youre going to cross-train, you might as well aim for the top, amiright?

Like these people say, capacitor is a major concern for Amarr ships. If you want to max them out, you should also get good armor tank skills (Hull Upgrades V, Mechanic V, rep systems V, the armor comps to III or IV), good gunnery, a bit of drone skills, Engineering V, Electronics V (Amarr ships are often CPU-tight), Weapon Upgrades V (again, CPU), and Adv. WU to IV or V.

I'm really not sure why sentry drones and heavy drones are considered essential for Amarr.

Cause each and every person replied actually seems to think Amarr BSs are the only worthy ships in this race
But that's not their fault, its Dave's...
He should set a "goal ships", cause cross training for EVERYTHING is a bit...meh...
For example he could be fond of a Curse...no real need to work on weapon usage cap skills - like controlled bursts. General related cap skills still apply for MWD cap usage, ship's maximum cap and recharge time etc. T2 drones etc skills could already be there for he is gallente.
He could also fancy a Sacrilege. HMLs work and he might have what it takes already if he's flying an HML recon competitively already...
Or could it be that he wans a Malediction, etc.
So basically the only racial lvl V skill needed is for Amarr Cruiser or Amarr Frigate etc.
Generalizing is...dunno...misleading to say the least in cross-training "polls"...

Ok, so if you wanna use lasers you will need all the typical gunnnery skills in addition to controlled burst lvl 5, not really optional. You will also need the two cap skills, energy management/system op lvl 5 and for any class of ship you fly you will need that ship skill to lvl 5. that last -10% to energy cap usage makes the difference between "OMG no CAP!!" to "Well this is srta usable".
Exceptions include the apoc, prophecy, maller, omen, and the punisher. These ships perform much better with projectiles or blasters.
Khanid ships are great, train them if you already know or are planing to cross-train to caldari.
The EW ships (sentinel, curse, pilgrim, arbi) used to be amazing. Now they are super-fragile, slow ships that have comparitively decently sized drone bays (until next patch when they will seem run-of the mill) and criplled EW that isn't worth your time. NOS is nearly useless (unless your fights last 5 seconds) and Neuts are great if you can find a blaster boat or a laser boat, otherwise your really just helping out the enemy.
Cap ships are very good, class leading in some cases. Here is were being amarr is useful. An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. |

Sentries arent that important but t2 heavies are. Pretty much in BS line you will use geddon most of the time (unless you seriously dislike it) coz its cost/effectiveness ratio is among the best in game (think only other BS that comes close is megathron).
And geddon without t2 heavies ist that appealing. Anyways if you even dont want to get t2 heavies drone interfacing5 is very good skill to have for any droneboat amarr might have.
So from necessary skills: amarr ship lvl5 (always must due to -10% cap use/lvl) gunnery maxed out (for gunboats) missiles maxed out (sacrilege) drones maxed out (curse)
If you ever plan on flying Absolution commands lvl5 is also a must (due to 10% damage/CS skill lvl... lvl4 vs lvl5 is really huge gap).

If you want to train amarr, you need a secondary skillplan for another race. Doesnt matter which one. No, this is not a troll or whine, its truth. Like every race, amarr suck in certain aspects, and you need to rain other races if you want a balanced set of abilities. I suggest to train minmatar, cause of the Vaga/Huggin combo which makes up 90% of todays professional small scale pvp.
