Hi,
I am trying to decide on wath my next ship should be. I am going to do a lot of mining but I still want to be able to do simple attack mission and such. What ship should I go for. I have found to canidates; (both gallante) Imicus and Maulus. Are any of those any good? one is, as I understand it, a pure mining ship while the other can do some fighting too...
Also; can I train skills so that I can use other ships other than Gallente? like maimar...

You can fly any ship you want from any race
you just need to learn skills
As for mining ship, i recommend getting the frigate that has 20% mining yield on its stats, you can still us this for combat by changing over your layout
just be aware you wont be able to carry much Ore If you serious about mining then start working toward barges then up to teh hulk

Thanks! I will try this.
one more question; how do I train the correct skill? I have found the skills for different ships but they just says "you are qualified" or something like that. But I cannot train them and when I am looking at the ships the icon for the required skill is still red...
What have I done wrong, or what do I need to train?

As to picking a mining vessel ... there are a few things to consider:
1) Does it get a mining bonus? 2) How many mining turrets will it support? 3) How large is it's hold? 4) Do you have a buddy/alt to haul for you? 5) Does it support Mining Drones? 6) How far away is the base you are depositing your ore at? Is it in the same system or is it a few jumps away?
Each of these factors changes things.
If you have a really high ore output but no where to put it - you're going to be making a lot of trips back to the base unless you Jet Can Mine.
If you are Jet Can Mining - if you don't have a hauler ... you're going to be making the same number of trips to empty the can - all so some pirate can come along and steal it.
If you have it in a secure can they can't steal it but secure can's only work in .7 space and below.
Secure can's only have so much space - much less than the your Jet Can's.
Secure can's require a certain amount of cargo space to hold them. However, they actually increase the amount of ore you can carry as they hold more m3 than they take up.
If you are mining into a Jet Can that your alt/buddy is immediately emptying (you can leave something in the can so it doesn't blow) then - raw ore production is the most important factor.
If you don't want to be robbed by pirates ... and are trying to run the ore back in your mining frigate ... then your cargo hold size is more important.
If you have a Hulk - which takes months to learn the skills for and costs in excess of 100,000,000.00 ISK - then you have a cargo capacity equal to or better than most Haulers ... so running the ore back and forth ... isn't as big a deal.
As with most things in EVE ... there isn't a simple answer. It all depends on what you want to do and what your situation is.
I have multiple accounts - so I have some alt's mining while other alt's are hauling. Of course - this means you are dedicating an Alt to hauling - so that he's not a very good miner. My experience leads me to believe that the best ratio is one hauler to two miners. More miners and the hauler can't keep up ... fewer miners and the hauler sits around a lot trying to use his one laser to add to the total. Of course this depends on the size of the hauler and the ore production of the miners ... One large capacity hauler can support several small mining frigates.
When I started out ... I used a couple of Imicus's to earn enough ISK to buy a couple of Tristan's. I used the Imicus's only to mine - and fought with the Tristan's.
In training skills for ships - you need to do a show info on the ship you want to get. In the market place - there's a little blue dot with an "i" in it that will give you the info for that ship. The ship's Show Info has a tab that lists "Required Skills" this will let you know which skills you must train in order to use that ship.
If there is no "Required Skills" tab than anyone can use it. An example being Shuttles. There is no skill requirement to use a Shuttle.

A very quick hauler to get into is a Bestower (Amarr built) and fit it with cargo extenders. As far as miner ships go, if you don't want to spend months training for a barge or hulk(exhumer) would be an Osprey(caldari cruiser)or an Apocalypse(Amarr Battleship) The only things to out mine an Apoc is the Rokh(Caldari BS,but not by much), Covetor and Hulk and training for it is very short. It can fit 8 Miner II's and has a nice drone bay which will hold 5 mining II drones and 5 medium combat drones which is plenty to pwn any rats you may come across down to .5 space with ease. If your in it for the long haul and want Mining to be your main profession then start training for the Hulk. If you want to make decent money but also do other things then go for the Apoc.
Remember regardless of race, you can fly any ship you want, you just have to train for it. None of the Gallente ships really excel in Mining except for the Dominix BS, it would be equal to a Retriever Barge which isn't saying to much but could be fitted to run missions as well.

For skills, if you don't have them in your character sheet, you'll need to buy them from the market.
After that, right click on them, train this skill and they'll be added to your character sheet.
You can then train them up to whatever level you need.

I will try what you all said...I will think of what type of ship I will need...
Thanks for the great assistance! One of the best newbie-help-forums I have ever visited! EVE has probably the best rookie-help I have seen so far...

Ships not in use will be in your Ships hanger. (in each station) The only limit on the number of ships you can have at any time is dependant on how many you can buy/build/find/steal. For mining, use the ship best suited for mining. When it's time for a mission, switch to the ship best suited for fighting.
For a mining frigate, Gallente pilots should get the Navitas. Each race has a frigate that has a mining yield/cargo hold bonus combo. Luckily, these frigs are also the cheapest and easiest to fly.
For the dedicated miner, Mining Barges & Exhumers are the way to go. If you're flying Gallente, stick with your mining frigate until you're able to fly a Retriever. All other races have a tier 1 cruiser that gets a bonus to mining yield. (Gallente just get an expanding cargo hold) For the health of your wallet and your sanity, do NOT get a Procurer. A Procurer is paper-thin and can be outmined by some of the frigates. The Retriever is still pretty thin skinned, but can field a full set of 5 light drones (make those combat drones so you can defend yourself). The Covetor is a little more sturdy than the Retriever and can field 5 medium drones, or 2 waves of 5 light drones. (Again, make sure you've got combat drones.)
After the Retriever and Covetor, are the lovely Exhumers.... very specialized versions of the Mining Barges that also have a bit stronger defences, but also cost quite a bit. (AND WORTH EVERY PENNY) For general mining, the Hulk is best. (nothing out-mines a properly fitted Hulk) For Ice Mining, get a Mackinaw. (double yield, but takes 25% longer per cycle) The Skiff is specialized for a very small niche - Mercoxite, a deep 0.0 space ore that's a little hazardous to mine. (and when mining Mercoxite, the skiff will actually outmine a Hulk trying for Mercoxite)
Try looking up some of the mining guides in the Stations & Outposts section. Haleda (sp?) has a GREAT guide in there. _______________________________
