Right now im using Thorium, but my laser friend is able to take down his targets from 30km and i'd like to be able to shoot at the stuff while he is too :) With thorium my optimal is 23km'ish. What do you all use in your rails?

I use thorium in my 250s and get a range of 38km optimal give or take a couple of meters ( can't check the exact number right now ).
So I'd suggest working up the sharpshooter skill a little ( I only got it at lvl 3 ) and get some nice range boosters, techII tracking enhancer and techII tracking computer instantly come too mind ( they're what I use ) ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Lead is two damage less than Thorium with no range penalty and I think (might be wrong) has the least capacitor use at the moment.

Train sharpshooter or use Caldari crusiers.
The Gallente Cruisers have damage bonus, Caldari have range bonus.
Or, you could use Lead M, slightly less damage than Thorium but better range.
What ship are you using, BTW? ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. I <3 ( . Y . ) |

There is no "best" ammo, just use the ammo that gives your optimal range as close as you can to your fighting range
It all depends on your range from your target.
For example if you're into pvp and use rails on your cruiser, go for antimatter as you have to be within 20km anyway to scramble

Iridium for long range, uranium when they get close.

1. You only have three medslots. So why waste one on a tracking comp. I'd fit two more lowslot tracking mods (get decent ones) instead. Use the medslot for something else. (dampener to dampen the laser guy for example )
2. Train up sharpshooter and that other skill that gives extra falloff. Also train up your rof as that will compensate for the extra misses a railgun suffers when not at optimal.
3. take along Tungsten, Iridium, Thorium or Lead and Antimatter ammo. If you take on spawns that close while you eradicate them, having four ammo types with sequential optimal ranges makes for far better damage average (unless you switch ammo too often).
But if you want to have moe fun then the heavy beam guy, fit blasters and MWD in close. Saves cargospace too as you'll only need one or two ammo types that way. _______________________________________________

Edited by: Gariuys on 15/03/2004 17:59:53 k Just for kicks, here's a thorax setup that I've used for quite a while now, and I'm quite in love with it, it can handle most anything NPC wise.
High: 3x250proto(thorium) 2xd150proto(thorium) Med: MWD, med shield booster( tech2 or one of the surplus c5-ls that are now around), tracking comp ( tech2 or one of the surplus optical tracking comps) Low: 1x relay, 1x RCU, 1x PDS, 1x tracking enhancer ( tech2 or fourier), 1x hybrid damage mod ( magnetic field II or magnetic vortex )
You can use less expensive equip and still get a decent result.
Those 250s can compete with BS sized guns for damage, the d150s take care of frigates in no time, only getting tracking problems once they get a good orbit and that's when you got 8 ogres ( those are preferred but a decent number of any drone will do for frigate killing ) Thorium will give you a nice range ( coupled with the 2 range boosting modules ) and has a nice balance between cap usage, range and damage
Cruiser spawns have frigates along for the ride most of the time so having good tracking is quite important. This setup is most usefull against serpentis though, you don't really have too take their damage if you can kill em before they start doing it. Against missile spammers 2 smartbombs might be more usefull, if you go that route replace the RCU with a relay and mess around a little to get the most out of your grid and cpu.
Don't go with a ammo type just based on range, go for a good overall result, that includes modules that'll help you shoot further and track better, cap usage and damage output. And on cruisers, taking multiple types of ammo along doesn't really work well either; 1) you need the cargo space, 2) changing takes 10 seconds which is a long time for a cruiser during actual combat for me it's 2 shots of the 250s which is a lot of damage, switching too antimatter to do more damage will never be worth it, even against the thoughest of cruiser spawns. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |
