I've just re-read the book (it's only very short) and some things still confuse me..
**Possible Spoilers! (please don't read if you don't want things spoiling maybe)**
Now, his survival and everything on his own makes sense to me, I understand all that. The people being scared of him and executing him? I DON'T understand that... if they had any semblance of intelligence they would have understood WHY he did what he did. Killing them while they're defenceless during the day? Well DUH, write a bloody letter and leave it on your chest when you go to sleep "I am a thinking person, please don't kill me in my sleep, I don't intend to kill you" but no, they act all secretive and don't tell him what's going on and then execute him for crimes he doesn't know he's committing. It makes as much sense as some aliens coming from space and saying "LOL, it's illegal to breathe, you have to die now" I like the book but I want to go "ARGLALALALALALGHGHGHGHGHG >.<" Unless of course there is something I missed, if there is please tell me as it would improve my enjoyment of the story greatly.
If you read all that and spoilt the book (or the film, I don't know if it follows the book) even when I warned you to then i'm sorry but you'll have to be executed, just because.

He was the stuff of nightmares. The personification of death. A society consisting of survivors of a plague that seemed to be something from ancient myth would obviously have great fear ( and therefore hatred for) something that comes when they slumber to kill them and their families.

They must have seen him somehow otherwise they wouldn't know it was him, if they'd seen him they'd know he was a man. Unless they were idiots they'd have tried doing something to contact him.

They did communicate via Ruth ( I think that was the name) She learned that he thought he must kill them all and other stuff but the kill em all part is all her superiors heard (think Bush just wanting an excuse for war {not what I think})

hmph.. stupid people.. what idiots.. forgetting his "crimes" it would have made more sense to incarcerate him than kill him because he is a much better scientific example for finding a cure for themselves when he's alive than dead, surely?

From what I gathered they weren't interested in being cured, but rather they had accepted their new condition.

Well he mentions mutation, remember, they have to keep it all in check with their pills. If HE can understand that it'll not last and all his scientific knowledge is based upon books stolen from the library then surely they must realise that if they don't stamp it all out they'll eventually succumb to it, they can't keep it in balance by taking pills forever.

Ok, this thread has turned into a major spoiler-fest anyway, so we may just as well go all the way - now I'm curious.
I wasn't intending to watch the movie, but I've seen the trailer and read an article about it, so I'm familiar with the basic plot line about this sole survivor guy in a world where all other remnants of humanity have turned into of some sort of vampires.
Could someone explain a bit better this twist at the end? What exactly was it that was going on? Who was Ruth?

Interesting...
Based on the Wikipedia summary of the plot, I'd say that the protagonist's final execution makes that much more poignant the irony of the executor of "legendary creatures of evil" unknowingly becoming a "legendary creature of evil" himself, preying on the new "society" during their sleep... I like that ending.

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 17/12/2007 02:14:53 They don't care why he's doing what he is doing.
He is a serial killer. He goes around while they are asleep and butchers them. He is legend and all that.
He's an enemy of the state or at least is wildly out of the step with the majority. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

Uh you didnt spil it ONE BIT..
BECAUSE THAT ENTIRE STORYLINE ISNT IN THE MOVIE.
if you watch the movie after reading the book.. you will be disappointed.. the whole reason for the title is left entirely out of the movie.

Not that I read the book, but if I had to guess, I could come up with 2 rationale.
a) They're really afraid of someone with that sort of power that can kill them while they sleep.
b) The notion that negligence of a crime is not an excuse for the crime itself. In their eyes he's a butcher for killing the newly formed society. Instead of looking at it through his eyes, it looks at it through the other society's eyes, and deem his actions as barbaric.
