I'm a noob, day 10 of my trial (though I've paid), and my standing is such that I have L2 contacts available, so I started doing L2 missions in my caracal. I did 5 missions that were only a tiny big harder than the L1's, then I got Recon (1 of 3). Used the accel gate and ended up in the middle of 8 elite cruisers and 4 frigates that locked me down and completely blew me away without any chance at all.
Reading the mission text, I had no way of knowing this would happen or that I would be facing such opposition. I know most of you know, because most of you have done all of these missions 1,000's of times.
Have I jumped to L2 too early? I had a friend come help me tank the mission in his Raven, but that's a 90 million isk ship and even HE took 30 min to clear each point. Is CCP saying that I shouldn't be doing L2 missions until I can afford a 90 million isk ship?
I thought I was doing the right thing going to L2...I had the standing, the contact was listed as available. Was I wrong?

You have not jumped to level 2 too early. You just got ambushed by not checking the mission details extra carefully. The recon series of missions (1-3) do not require that you shoot anything at all, much less kill everything. In this series, you are there to scout. The mission does not require you to kill. In fact, in local you will (or should) get a message telling you that you can go back to your agent at some point (ccp did stop that message from appearing in all your chat channels, like it used to).

Got burnt on that mission too until I found an explanation on a guide site.
Aside from the big blockade mission it is the most lethal mission at level 2.
Once you know what to do both are not a big deal.

Any chance you can share that guide site? Someone sent me a link in-game but the descriptions are very brief and frequently wrong/outdated. Any wisdom would be appreciated.

I use a shuttle for recon 1 and 2 
just warp home when the mission complete shows up
