Edited by: Khaarg on 15/03/2004 09:51:02 What do people think of interceptors?
Does anyone fly one?
I think they should be cheaper and need less skills to fly so i posted it in the ideas forum. Im just wondering what other people think.

They are way overpriced because of the current T2 component ripoffs and the fact that the BP owners want major profit.
They're only actually worth like 500k, lol. (according to EVE insurance)
They're VERY useful... they can lock in seconds, and keep themselves from being locked for minutes. 5 can easily take down a battleship that doesn't have a smartbomb or drones.

I have one. It's amazing.
I think the skill requirements ar emore then justified. Evasive Manouvering is actually a useful skill, and overall, I don't consider 24-25 days of training that long.
Cheaper, perhaps so. They're quite expensive, but in my opinion, worth it for novelty value alone

Worth it for practical use too!
From a pirate's point of view, they're a dream. I own a Claw, and I can't tell you how many frigate's and shuttles I've taken down carrying semi-valuable stuff which the owner thought would be safe in a quick and nimble frigate :)
She has paid for herself many times over, and she's a dream to fly.

Interceptors are the first of the specialized ships, they are suposed to be hard to use... well hard is the wrong word for it, they are suposed to take a long time of training to be able to use.
As we move past the other tech 2 ships we will according to the devs have to specialize more and more, very few players will be old enough to be able to fly more than one type of advanced cruiser, even fewer advanced BS.
If you put interceptors at a skill req lower than now then everyone will be able to use all of them in only a few weeks.

I have had (not the have, I got the crow blown up) both the crow and the raptor. I didn't really have the crow long enough to test its abilities, I got*****y with 5 m0ovolution BS group and they took me down :p It did take them 5 or 6 attempts, and 5 or 6 different jump gates though, and I'm not convinced in the end it wasnt my own fault for flying directly away from them (no traversal speed). That in itself is a testament to how good Interceptors are.
I'm now flying my raptor instead, and I managed to track down and pod two guys in safe spots yesterday who were spying on our fleet and kill a further 3 frigates. I also nearly got a 6th (Jonny Q, you are a very lucky man). I would recommend to you all that you get the crow in preference to the raptor. The extra launcher makes such a difference, that 6th guy would have been dead and podded if I had had the extra cap and/or the extra launcher to hit him with another cruise missile.
Basically, if you want a ship to either gank indies, scout enemy formations or take down spy's to deny your enemy of intelligence, Interceptors are THE thing to go for. Rifter is the other option, but its not nearly as fun :p
Basically I love them, and I'm already trying to get hold of a replacement Crow, I'm selling a Moa I've never really used to get it :p

I have a Crow and a Raptor, both superb ships.
I enjoy them so much that my Raven is almost always docked now.
Interceptors are very useful, especially for patroling Forsaken Empire space... and they are fun too.
Good skills, good modules, careful setup make interceptors very useful, and in some ways powerful, ships.
Only gripe, insurance only covers the basic frigate cost, so it pays out 300k on a ship costing 6-8mil.
Is it worth the cost? Hell yes, they can defeat cruisers of a similar price. ______________________________________________

Edited by: Khaarg on 15/03/2004 10:58:21 yes i agree they are great for scout ships but 6million is a lot of money for a scout ship i think.
The reason i thought they were a little wrong was because its a huge leap going from frigate to cruiser. And its an even bigger leap going from cruiser to battleship. I would like it if there was something in between.
Just now im stuck in my merlin with no where to go. The next step i will advance to is cruiser but thats a long way off. Everything i have is going on skills which i need but waiting for them to train is boring. If there was a class in between frigate and cruiser it would give me something to save up for and give me something interesting to do while i wait for my skills to raise.

I've bought a Crusader and in about 8 days i can finally fly the damned thing. Do you consider this to be a good Interceptor? The Claw seems a bit too "uber" compared to the other interceptors though... it should have less grid in my opinion because large grids should be reserved for Amarr vessels only. (if you call 40 grid large:)
After i bought the Crusader interceptor, i've made this Excel sheet to quickly see the difference between the interceptor. If you are still unsure which one to get, perhaps this might help. -------

I added to my post above(in one of my replies)
Do you think or would you like something in between frigate-cruiser and cruiser-battleship?
I think it just makes things a little more interesting.

Well, seems like a lot of praise for the Caldari interceptors, anyone use the Amarr ones? if so can I have an opinion or two about them?
I'm thinking of getting the Malediction but I still need to bite the bullet and train Amarr frigate to lvl5 still not convinced if it's 10 days well spent or not.

I love my malediction so worth the 24 days of training. Its not a massive damage dealer as its turrets only but looks so damn evil! Fast too. :)
Prefer it to any cruiser or battleship.

If you break down the tech2 components into raw minerals you need around 5mill isk of raw mins to produce one, I think CCP should revisit the insurance payouts of interceptors asap

Skinnieh, the Claw is a great ship but in no way overpowered. It has severe targetting issues (very short range) and you overshoot other ships sometimes before even being able to complete your lock on them...
I'd say the Crow is the best interceptor there is - three medslots in combination with three launchers make it the perfect scrambler support frigate and gives it firepower that can actually make a difference.

khaarg..
Easy, surf to www.eve-db.com.
The way i did it is as follows:
Once the ship information is on the screen, right click the table and select "Export to Microsoft Excel". Select all the cells containing information and Copy, then click on an empty cell and select: Edit -> Paste Special and click Transpose to get it horizontal instead of vertical. Repeat for all the ships and all that is left is to format it to make it look nice (which i suck at).
Btw, Export to Excel may only be available on Excel 2002 or newer. -------

I wouldn't overlook the stiletto people. Four mid-slots on an interceptor? Is this an attempt by minmatar for EW pwnage? It's almost enough to make a grown amarr cry.

Sorry but no,
I tried it and you really need the extra medium slot which the Malediction does have (you can fly that ship too, once you can fly the Crusader).
The ability to MWD towards the enemy, warp scramble it, and webify it is deadly. With the Crusader you have to choose: or Webify, or Warp scramble... I mean you can not ditch the MWD, as you need it to close the range before the enemy warps away, or approaches the gate with blistering speed.
Hope that helps for you,
Star.

Just a suggestion to all of you who are using (or thinking of using) cruise missiles on an interceptor.
I'm sure most of you realise this, but just incase....
The interceptor is faster than the missiles it fires, you effectively dump the missiles out the back of the thing like depth charges out the back of a ship. Delay firing your missiles till the very last minute, and then dump the lot over the side and run away. This drastically increases your chances of hitting the enemy, and also reduces the chance that they will have buggered off into warp before the missiles hit. Against any frigate, lock, warp, web and dump all your missiles (in my case three cruise, love that crow) over the side. At this point, if they haven't shot you back, its safe to turn off your MWD, its definatly safe to turn off the web and scrambler, they're already dead .
Do a 180, reload, lock the pod and scramble it too. Fire off another missile and sit back ready to collect the corpse . With the Crow it is possible to kill another frigate literally within seconds of warping in, taking no damage and with no possibility of escape. This will probably work with only 2 launchers, it works well in my raptor, but you have to be careful not to run out of cap incase your first volley of cruise doesn't kill them. You don't want to lose the warp disruptor.
This is particularly relevant if they're ready to jump through a gate when you find them. If you fire at them and miss they'll jump and have it away, you stand no chance of finding them as you won't be able to jump for another minute. If you fly upto them and ram the cruise down their throat from a few hundred metre, they'll die, or they'll panic and jump before you've fired, in which case you can jump and track them down.
Just a little tip for those who don't already know it (most people already flying the things already should, but just incase).
regards,

I have both an Ares and Taranis.
Ares: I love this thing. Tiny sig radius (with interceptor at level 3), 2 launchers, tons of structure, and it's fast as all hell. In fact instead of a MWD I've just put a Cold-Gas AB on it and it still hits about 960m/s easily, and can go that fast as long as it wants with plenty of cap left over. One the (only) other mid slot, a webifier. With cruise missiles and a named 125mm railgun, you warp in, lock, web, and fire everything. Most frigates will be dead before they've realized what's happening. The only weakness of the Ares is that it only has 2 mid-slots. The 4 low-slots are very nice though.
Taranis: This is probably the meanest, most agressive-looking interceptor around when guns around mounted, with only the Crusader rivaling it in looks. Currently I have 3 named 125mm rails on it with AM S ammo, but I'll be experimenting with named Light Neutrons shortly. Damage is pretty good (at least against frigates), and works fairly well against cruisers as well. The one chance I''ve had so far to engage a cruiser in it, I took a blackbird (probably had a MWD mounted) down to about 1/2 shields in about 5-10s (when he then jumped).
I'm still constantly tweaking the loadouts, but one recommendation to everyone: if you have an interceptor, make sure you have the skills trained to use Micro Auxilliary Power Cores. They make a BIG difference in how you'll be able to load your ship.
Oh, I had a friend with the Crusader--she's pretty darn happy with it and, using a Micro Aux, doesn't have a problem mounting 4 named Medium Beam lasers on it, along with all the other equipment. She has better combat skills than me, and does about 1.5x the damage with that as I do in the Taranis. ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. Taranis is a superb interceptor, i can only reiterate what the guy before said, it looks damned mean. I have mine fitted with neutron blasters x3 and all frigates disappear in an explosion after one or two volleys. My only issue is its defence vs's cruise missiles, but even then i can take 4 hits from those before it pops me into space, due to its shields, armour and structure. I added a shield extender II to mine a couple of days ago, and now my battles vs Rats never take me below shield strength.
And like busko said before 2 man team one Ares one Taranis and we took out three cruiser rats 45K'er and 2 30K'er, without having to play chicken poo like them kestrel pirates that are the bane of civilized space.

I have a Claw interceptor and absolutely love it. I spend a lot of time just flying around (visiting my research agent, checking the market, running low-cargo agent jobs, etc...) and the speed you can get from a properly rigged Claw is insane. 4 +30 m/sec overdrives, a MWD, and an AB give me a top speed of 6500 m/sec (sustainable for several hundred km) and a cruise speed of 750 m/sec for when I'm not paying attention (like reading this forum ).
In combat, I like using 3 200mm autocannons + 1 standard missile. They eat frigates FAST and just sound cool. For PVP I'd go 2 missiles and 2 autocannons vs. frigates or indies, 2 missiles and 2 artillery vs cruisers. Against battleships, I'd fly a Stiletto and use EW, since I've found out from a friendly sparring match with a corpmate that frigates just can't do much against battleship shields without having about half a dozen of them.
Of course if you DO have half a dozen interceptors coming at your battleship, I'd say you'd best RUN...
