Getting bored of missions and being careful to run those after a major patch, I decided to give exploration a shot. I had already seen quite a few complexes back in the days when they were still static and done some 0.0 exploration site which a corpmate discovered.
To get the hang of it, I decided to start scanning in empire and in my first system I found a unknown site, scanned it down, got a BM of the deadspace gate, hopped into my pimped nighthawk and thought "let's roll"...
Enter the "DOH!"-Moment. It wouldn't let my nighthawk in, which is good. I pieced together a rather cheap kestrel and killed some frigs in two stages, inculding a dread guristas rat at the end dropping a low-grade crystal. Not spectacular, but not shabby either. To my surprise something else happened: I got an escalation called "Trap?". The next day I got myself a hawk, put gist a-type booster and some t2 stuff on it, did a few jumps through highsec to get to my escalation site, again pwnt some npc frigates including another DG rat dropping another low-grade crystal and YAY \o/, more escalation...
The second escalation was pretty much the same as the first one, just no fancy loot. So was the third.
The last one sent me a few jumps into lowsec. I though the rats may be tougher so I put some t2 on a caracal, hopped into a replaceable clone (no implants lost, luckily) and went to the final site. A cruiser and some more frig NPCs. I had expected a bit more, but this was rather quick and painless. After all the rats were dead I thought to myself "... this is it?", but then I went through the wrecks and one was a dire pithi one. I didn't know it was supposed to have good loot, but it was named differently than the others and low and behold, it had a pithi a-type small SB in it (good item, worth about 300m).
Altogether it was well worth the efford and also a good deal of fun.
I REALLY liked the part that I couldn't take in my nighthawk and pwn everything, but that I had to take smaller ships making it more challenging.
I wish mission were a bit more like that too, forcing the use of different ship sizes and still allowing great rewards for smaller ships. (like the above exploration). A suggestion I made earlier was to make allowed shipsize dependent on agent level and difficulty on agent quality such that high quality lvl 1 agent would give rewards close to high quality lvl 4 agent. Both would offer missions of comparable difficulty, just for different ships.

Edited by: Anaalys Fluuterby on 18/12/2007 23:35:53 Exploration, next to mining, is one of the most boring parts of Eve. That is right until you get within 1000 km of the site and studiously attempt to wrangle closer...
I spent three nights tracking down a Magnometric site in a .6 system this week, only to find some 40 pieces of salvage that weren't of any interest. But last week I tracked down almost 100m of various things.
1 more day until I can fly a Covert Ops and get my scan times down (been using a T1 astrometrics frig). But I'm hooked, its a great escape from missioning and can be done as AFK as mining.

3 nights on a 0.6 mag site? That's a very long time for a site in high sec. You weren't probing each planet individually by any chance?

I just scanned down my first Radar site last night. I've done Gravimetric, Magnetometric, and even a couple Unknowns before. It was a Base 1 Serpentis site in a 0.8 or 0.9 system. It even had a 0.1918 sig strength off my quests. Skipped straight to sift and got it on my first scan. Grabbed my cruiser and went in, shot down a destroyer and a "spy" frigate. Hacked three cans to get 45 Mil worth of decryptors. Not bad for an hour or two of scanning, I think.

Well either you are incredibly lucky or once more It's more rewarding to play in high sec than in 0.0 ; in this last case ... good job CCP once more.

Did you deliberately ignore the lowsec part or does that play a role in some misqoute-whine machination of yours?
Either way, it was probably sheer luck and I agree that low- and null-sec should be more attractive.

Thought i'd let you know I found a 500 million isk shield booster in a low sec system last week. It was a gas cloud site, it just goes to show you can be real lucky if your persist.

Yes, and you need Hacking and Archaeology/Salvaging if you plan on doing the profession sites. You also will want covert ops and a covert ops ship for further reduced scanning time.
And to realize you don't always make out like a bandit. Not on every site anyways.

Nope, just unlucky on that one
In the last 3 nights I have identified multiple more sites, actually went after and found a 4/10 complex (nothing special loot wise but plenty of rats), a radar site with 2-encryption books, a radar site that had a bunch of lesser-value invention stuff (and 3 1M BS rats) and 2 unknowns that yielded nothing special loot wise but were worth around 3m each in rats. They all took about 1 1/4 hours to find from laying the first net of Quests to warping to the first room.
Love exploration! And love it more now that I'm running 200 second scan times in the Covert Ops instead of the 328 seconds with the T1 frig

First: let me congratulate you on some nice loot.
Secondly: don't listen to the whiners, they are the ones who play and scan 1 site / day thus telling you exploration sucks. I usually make a bil or more in 0.0 when scanning, but it might be because i actualy use 2 chars, 1 to run the site 1 to scan, and i do this for 5-6hours instead of 1 as everyone else.
Third: your nighthawk can't enter the first stage, but it can enter the remaining escalations.
