Forgive me for asking what I expect is a fairly jaw-dropping question, but in my defence I have tried to find some info but failed miserably - Sentry drones - whats the low-down?
Back in the day I remember having 15 drones swarming around my Dominix, and when I rejoined Eve 18 months ago, I simply bought all the old drone skills from memory, and trained them all to the levels I had on my old character. Earlier this year when I actually came to use drones and found that things had significantly changed, I wasn't too bothered as I wasn't really ready to dive back into drone use, but now that I'm back to training drones, for T2, I need the low-down on sentries, and their use...
I've read the Drone guide that is posted here on the forums, but it doesn't go into actual specifics with regard to sentries.
Info most appreciated!
Regards,
Mox.

Sentries are basically drones that don't move, but use long range guns. The fact that they are completely stationary means that you can't just recall them - you actually need to get within 1500m of them yourself to pick them up.
I personally think that Bouncers are the only properly useful ones. I only use them on Capitals, but that's just personal preference.

I only use them in missions on my alt in a Domi, but I use both Warden (long range) and Garde (short range) almost exclusively. I will pull out some medium drones if there are lots of frigates though, but if it's mostly cruiser and larger then they rock. The damage is better than heavy drones and they don't have to fly out to a target, but they do have trouble tracking / hitting smaller ships. The mid-slot drone upgrade works great, and the high slot upgrade gives you more drone control range so you can have them attack things further away -- great for sniping. There's also rigs to up their damage as well but I haven't used them.
Main drawback is they are stationary so you have to stay within 1500m if you want to be able to scoop them. But if you do stay close then they scoop pretty much instantly, no waiting for them to fly back, and they will never orbit around your ship at 1501m with their MWD on! As a matter of fact I tend to orbit MY ship around one just to keep myself moving, not that I'm saying a Domi can speed tank but it does help lower incoming DPS a bit from the rats. ;)
HippoKing ? I thought you were long gone, welcome back !

Edited by: MyOwnSling on 20/12/2007 18:11:19 I also use gardes and wardens. The gardes seem like the best choice for gate camps because they have the highest tracking of the four and wardens are good for sniping at medium range (T2's out past 100km with omnidirectional tracking links).
EDIT: welcome back hippo! ------------- Stop whining.

whoa....who let him back in
Back on topic. I have found sentry drones, particularly Gardes, to be extremely effective in close-quarter gang pvp. They are quite devastating to cruisers, HACs, Recons, and BCs. I've found that they are an excellent complement to a blaster Mega especially for large engagments that last a while. Their ability to near instantly switch targets in the middle of a fight has proven invaluable when picking off EW ships and other support craft.

I don't know if it's new in this patch or in a recent one, but also you can have now have your drones Assist or Guard another player in your fleet... which is nice because they will attack whatever that player is attacking or being attacked by -- without you needing to lock on to them. It is a little buggy (like all things drone) in that it doesn't always seem to work of course, but it's still great.
