Play-by-Play of what just happened.
I log in for the first time in 5 months, get podded because my corp disbanded.
All of my possessions are in a station I can not dock in.
Premium graphics content "Is not compatible" with my computer. Even though I have an ATI X850 Graphics card and 3.0ghz processor. Bullcrap? Yeh.
Not looking good so far =( hehe.
Now the thing is, I know my graphics card can handle these graphics. It's not a bad card at all, I can play BF2142 on highest settings and other high-end graphics games with no issues. What can I do?

ATI X850 does NOT support Shader Model 3.0, and therefore is unable to run the Trinity engine.

That's ridiculous. So I suppose CCP is encouraging me to go out and buy another $500 card that will be $50 by the next major expansion?

ATI Radeon X850 support DirectX 9 Shader Model 2.0 as far as I know, but not 3.0 which is needed for the Premium Graphics in EVE.

Not five hundred. Maybe 80 or so they have a list of compatable cards. A lot of them are quite cheap. If you are looking for an overhaul i dont TOUCH that range of cards.

Need not be a $500 card...lots of cards support Shader Model 3 these days. You could blame ATI as easily as CCP. Frankly more and more games are coming out with Shader Model 3 support only (BioShock was like this) so I suspect you are in for a new card sooner rather than later anyway.

Lots of people prefer the older graphics. Premium is shiny but resource hungry.
Good luck getting your stuff, or stuff you can use.

A new graphics card that'll do SM3 shouldn't set you back 500 anything. I've got an nVidia 8500 that set me back just under $100 US earlier this year. Trinity Premium graphics look GREAT. _______________________________

The biggest problem with upgrading from an X800 or X850 is finding a good card that will actually perform better - a lot of cards won't, and it doesn't make sense to upgrade from a card that performs so well to one that doesn't just for SM3 support. Upgrading from my X800 XT, I finally settled on a Saphire Radeon HD 3850 for $170. Not cheap by any means but more bang for the buck than getting an X1950 or whatever. __________

CCP didn't do this for marketing reasons.
they are an indie company they want people platying the game. they don't want you to go out and pay someone else money.
key word SOMEONE ELSE. ccp wants it. they need it.

No, CCP is offering better graphics for people that have upgraded their video cards in the past 1.25 years or so... SM3.0 is not new nor is it an onerous requirement.
Why are you surprised your computer is out of date? Would you expect a new game to natively support an old card? Computer generations are very quick... it's part of the territory to upgrade everyt 6 onths if you want to stay on the top...
Imagine expecting Unreal to natively support a MX4000... lol

again, if ATI wasn't stupid and decided "We won't support SM 3.0", we wouldn't have this discussion.
You can buy a NVIDIA 8600 GTX (512 MB) for about $150, and the GT model (256MB) for about $120 or so. Unless you are willing to shell out $250 for a 8800, those are currently the best cards you can get, and they support DX10 (although some features will only be supported by the upcomming 9000 series...).
Secondly, BF2142, CSS, HL2, ect. are hardly taxing games graphically. My 8600 GT can run all with everything on at over 60FPS (2142) and 100 FPS (CSS, HL2). And thats with a cripple for a CPU (Pentium D 3.0 GHz).

Just out of interest, and since the graphics card questions are being handled very well by other posters, is there any recourse in the above event?
If you leave the game, come back later and the station where all your StuffÖ is has changed hands and you can no longer get it, is there anything that can be done? Would a petition be answered favourably? ________________________________________________________________

Best you could do is try asking the current owners very nicely if you could get your stuff back, but even if they say yes, which is highly doubtfull, chances are they'll just wait till you undock with your stuff and gank you, i know i would and i'm not even a pirate
Or if you've got a clone there and a fitted industrial there a small chance you could sneak it out after down time, but i wouldn't count on it....

Often your best recourse is to contact the new owners and sell your stuff at a discount via contracts (which can be done in space without access). Obviously it depends on who the new owners are as to what discount they accept. Out of curiousity, where is the station?

When CCP finally make new graphics you can't possibly want them to make it for yesterdays cards. That makes no sense at all.

unfortunatly mate, you just one of the thousands of people who ATI conned in to buying a flawed product design.
yes it push more polly's that any other card of its generation, unfortuatly its just missing loads of stuff that was gonna be needed for the future, or now the present.
ATI conned way to many people that line of cards and your a casualty, sorry dude.

Just bought my first ATI card today (im an nvidia guy normally,) a very small upgrade until I build my next uber PC (this one is over 2 years old now.)
ATI RADEON HD 2400 Pro Overclocked 256mb DDR2 - $100
It has High Dynamic Range effects, Shader model 3.0 and support DirectX 10 graphics. Its not the greatest card, but it was the best I could find for such a low price. I recommend it until you upgrade your PC again, it manages to play all the new games with average output.

Allow me to laugh out loud, you call BF2 "high-end graphics, so then what is Crysis, Bioshock, World in Conflict, Gears of War? I just upgraded from a x800, and I've been aware of the lack of SM3 support since I wanted to play R6Vegas..
