Escrow is designed as a way to trade items that cannot be bought and sold over the general market (i.e named equipment, blueprint copies etc) However it is also used by bell-ends who try to swindle players by naming the item as something completely different to what it actually is (i.e seliing Shuttles as Battleships).
So when using it - right click and check da merchandise first. ---------------------------------------------

So is the ESCROW in a right click option? Also, to check the item, just right click and 'Show Info' right?

Yep - whatever is REALLY being sold will appear in the window. Always remember to streatch out the window as people will try to sell used up blueprint copies as good ones. The info in BPcs will appear at the top. ---------------------------------------------

I'd just like to know what the word "ESCROW" means? Is it an acronym for something, a made-up Eve word, or is my vocabulary just not strong enough?

From Dictionary.com
Escrow n. - Money, property, a deed, or a bond put into the custody of a third party for delivery to a grantee only after the fulfillment of the conditions specified.
So, basically, a person selling a BPc puts the item in escrow. The condition is paying said person x isk. Buyer pays x isk and receives the BPc out of escrow.

Nope - general usage in the financial world.
Basically, anything held securely "in trust" with conditions on its release is held in escrow. It can apply to financial transactions, bartering of goods via a third party, intellectual property rights, and a host of other things.
The software house I work for holds all its source in escrow for our clients so that they can still function in the event of anything really major happening.
