CCP is going to nerf speed. no maybe but they haven't said anything yet bull**** you know it's coming. we all know it. but instead of just lowering base speed and hurting newer players so that only the rich can still use a ****ing frigate we should do something new.
nerfing is bad.
So why not make it so that once your go over 6 X base speed acceleration is scaled based on mass. at 6Xbase speed after the 10 X base speed your acceleration goes form 100 to 50% scaling and your mass increases. Then at the next 6X base speed it's goes form 50% to 25% and then 25% to 10% acceleration rate. and then it never gets lower.
Note this would mean older players could still reach these speeds but it would make it easier to web them because a nano speed won't be able to get to full speed out of 18,000m/s while webed because the base speed of the ship has been cut down thus getting the new top speed while web would take forever, allowing for ships to still go fast, and webs to be more effective.
I'm sorry to all who hate my posts.
so lets say your base speed with rigs and skills and junk is 1000m/s
you go up and hit 5000 m/s just as fast as now you then slowly accelerate slower
at 6000m/s your still acellerating at about 90% your mass is up 10%
at 10000m/s your now at 50% of the normal rate your mass is up 50%
at 15000ms your still getting up there but at 25% of the normal rate our mass is up 75%
now you get webbed and your speed is killed your mass makes you slow down VERY FAST!
it would all be based on base speed.
someone wish to really run the numbers for me? I'm sure there is a better balance as I'm not a speed freak, nothing can touch me when I'm going 8,000 m/s anyways I don't see the need to go faster.

be careful they might decide the speed nerf is increase MWD cap use. with this change they could also reduce MWD cap use by 10%:P just saying :D
also what do you think about a mass increase only making webbed nano ships stop in split second? thus not decreasing the ships acceleration as much but just helping a web catch a target?
no one dare say something about space physics, we all know eve doesn't use those or mass wouldn't even be in the game :O
as a frigate pilot I don't want to go slow unless I put 30 mil into each ship.

Edited by: Dromidas Shadowmoon on 23/12/2007 08:05:46 That means if someone goes too fast they will turn into a black hole and pod themselves and take out the rest of the system as well? Lets do it! Minmatar will be able to take out blobs by ourselves.
Quote: now you get webbed and your speed is killed your mass makes you slow down VERY FAST!
One problem with this logic, if you have heavy mass you'll have massive inertia, and webs won't stop you until you're well outside of their range (which is what currently happens anyway)

you mean the other way around right?
the lower your mass the slower you decelerate I though... the higher your inertia? as in I thought you got high inertia when you use nanos to get low mass.

Nope, sorry. High mass tends to mean a lot of inertia. Slap a Cruiser AB on a Destroyer and see how fast you accelerate (and then decelerate).
You know the way the Hactor fields reduce mass by 80% (and thrust as well. . )? That was to give them very good agility, which makes them change speed very quickly and slow down almost instantly. -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. Quote: An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newton's law, basically, if someone is going down the street in a bike and another person in a car, both in 'neutral', which one would you have the easiest chance of getting in front of and making them come to a halt?
Definitely the bike, and why is that? Bike weighs maybe 150 lbs with the driver, car weighs 4000ish lbs, car has enough inertia to squash you :P
So basically it takes more work to slow down a heavier object, because it has more mass that wants to keep going.
Though EVE does have one thing that makes it a little confusing, because in space you shouldn't ever slow down when you turn off your thrusters, so its a little confusing :)

the problem with speed nerf is TIME nerf (increase). I dont want to spend 15 hours a day just trying to do 2 l4 missions. Interceptors need speed to clone and snare pods etc. etc. I have honestly stopped doing L4 misisons because of the time factors> "need for speed" changes will be for nothing of speed get nerfed too much. Id also like to point to out to the quick fit addicted NERF whiners to please remember those super fast ship/clone combinations cost players almost enough for a dread. You will rarely encounter those players. The biggest issues with 10,000 m/s nano sabres was their precieved invulnerability when dropping bubbles...please realize they are outflying their tracking at those speeds...
Speed is for evasion/travel. Lets not get carried away with nerfing it to apease those that never want to lose a kill... EVER. (no one is perfect) Warp to zero is nice...but its not implemented with autopilot and anything over 27 jump gates is causing carpal tunnel syndrome.Lets not make eve more time consuming then real world work.

Instead of nerfing speed, why not just add a new weber the has a 22K range with a max of 30-35% in speed reduction.
It would be just like the warp scramblers, you have a 7.5K at 2 points and 20K and 1 point. The Weber's would now be more in-line with the scramblers, 10K at 90% max and a 22K at 35% Max. And have the fitting in-line with with the scramblers.

tbh i'm fine with speed as it currentley is, and i don't fit polycarbs or use implants, and i'm not a vaga pilot.
If someone wants to fit a few 100m in rigs to a dictor, or shove over a billion isk into there clone and do Ludicrous Speed, thats fine by me, at some point they will die and lose an absurd amount of isk and that seems like a reasonable counter to me.
Actuley it makes me wonder if people just want this stuff nerfed because they can't afford it. -

i also had an idea that would not affect you unless you went over a specific speed limit and would then be a very distinct penalty based on how much faster you go
nerfing anything slower even if balanced by something new will just break some ships and overpower others thus creating many smaller problems and fixing little Trashed sig, Shark was here |

Speed fits can only kill people who are unprepared. The vast majority of fits can kill an unprepared person as well. Speed gangs are very easily countered by a proper gang.
Removing/nerfing speed is a very nice way to kill solo/small gang play as well as making the lowest DPS/worst tanking race a waste of time.
The current speed fits have been around for over a year now, yet serious whining on the forums only started after the ECM nerfs. Can't wait when everything in this game is replaced with hugs and kisses because people are too stupid to adapt to fitting trends and decide to complain.

Some speed fits are absurd. They hit nanophoons already but some fits, when you combine implants + gang boosts + rigs + mods, just go off the charts speedwise. "Adapting" should not equal "You must have 5 Huginns wherever you go" (and even those fail these days against a savvy speed pilot).
My guess is you are enjoying being an untouchable speed pilot. Well, in the last Live Dev Blog CCP Devs mentioned that speed will be getting nerfed. Hope you're not too stupid to adapt.

They are very fast. They have terrible DPS. A proper prepared gang (not setup to counter speed gangs, just a gang in general) tends to have EWar, Damps, Neuts, perhaps Huginn/Rapier/Hyenas, plenty of drones (most speed ships need to slow down to do any damage), Interceptors, etc.
There are plenty of counters available that require practically no ISK investment. A 'gang' of these crazy-speed demons you talk about cost as much as a few motherships total. Going at such high speeds is only good for tackling people who don't think aligning is a good idea, as moving that quickly means your DPS is 0. You say they let you avoid blobs and getting caught? So can cloaking, agile ships, people with decent intel, scouts, etc etc.
If speed is nerfed then the idiots (and people who have never PvPed outside of a blob) win once again.

Correct me if I'm wrong but EVE is not meant to be about untouchable ships. When only one ship (or ships in the Huginn/Rapier/Hyena) is the sole answer to a given setup then something is amiss. More, even a Huginn cannot stop these speed guys (they just coast out of range). While a speed setup may be weak DPS wise several can still do enough damage to count. Combine them with non-tracking weapons (drones or missiles) and their speed does not even have a real downside.
EVE is about balance. Sure if a gang is better setup they should win but your opponent should have some reasonable answers to what you are doing. You are supposed to be stoppable/killable in EVE.

I think a best way to control the speed is that change all the speed related mods to a single fit mods just like shield booster - you cant turn on more than 1 shield booster at a time. Same like speed related mods, if you fit a poly then you cant fit inerit, OD etc..

So why not make it so that once your go over 6 X base speed acceleration is scaled based on mass.
Why so complicated? I proposed a long time ago that the mass penalty for MWD/AB (it exists!) just be increased dramatically with no other changes. The effect would be that while the top speed is still obtainable to get away or to approach an enemy, it would not be practical to use it in combat since the ship would not be maneuverable (you would need a huge orbit etc.).
Killing speedtanking would be bad though, it's one of the few major strategic choices you have in PVP and it would result in more people "just tanking". Less variety = more of a numbers' game = more blobs = lag = bad.

Well maybe. But I note you do not detail this magic, kill all speed fits that you are privvy to. If speed fits were so easy to counter you would not see so much of them.
In the end the Devs seem to think some ships are simply going faster than intended. I agree. Some ships are meant to be crazy fast (e.g. interceptors). Barring those ships some semblance of sense needs to be brought to the rest.

Yup, yup agree with all of the above.
I have once seen 5 nanoships unable to kill a myrm + domi pair after trinity patch. The domi and myrm were combat fit so heavy neuts, tank, smartbombs and they killed enemy drones. Nano ships couldn't close or get the neuts and if they slowed down to hit properly they'd get the neut + web combo.
'Good' Nano-gangs fit specifically for their gang, they don't use "standard fits" they use whatever the group demands, they fit to be one cohesive group all working together. There's a lot of dumb people flying around, getting 10 'x' in alliance chat and forming a gang will not give you an automatic win, fit smart and you will do well.
