Edited by: Silverlancer on 16/03/2004 22:04:06 IMO, players mining in empire space are not carebears. They know darn well that they could earn 20 times what they are in 0.0, but they don't--they want a bit of easy cash without risking their ship. Thats not a carebear.
A carebear, IMO, is a player who always wants the game mechanics to be in their favor and whines when they aren't. i.e. pirates who want to be able to use the logon exploit and whine when its declared illegal. Or a miner who whines when the spawns in 0.4 are beefed up. Or the pirates who whine when the sentry guns range goes to 150km even though they still can easily pirate at long range.
And EDIT: I am not a carebear as my entire corp (most of it) just moved out to the depths of 0.0 to mine crokite... we've earned more in 2 days than we have in our entire corp history.

I don't think it's a stupid word. It is very descriptive, and unfortunately derogatory as well, of the pattern the thread starter posted.
I've often titled myself as a carebear but of course I don't believe it to be true. I like playing the game. I also like having to strive for what I'm winning.
A carebear would like things as easy as possible. The joy of isk without the joy of creating wealth. The satisfaction of the kill without the messiness of sweat or risk.
Carebear is a word that will live as long as there are people lame enough to think that it is the gaining that is of value and not the striving and proving.

"A person who enjoys playing games that were ment for Player vs Player combat, but instead play against Bots or monsters."
so eve isonly meant for us to go killing each other all the time? whats the point in that, if thats the case then y r the roids there? PVP is a laugh but mining and trade are also vital parts of the game, surly people should not be ripped if this is why they wanted to play this game. Each to his / her own i say. There is no point in getting rid of the consept of the carebear as if its got rid of another title will take its place. PVP is a part of this game, but using it to attack people who do not wish to engage in such things isnt fair on them, yes they should be prepaired ot take the risk if they wanna play the game and hell if they wanna make money by mining in rough areas then hell if they die what they expect. but hitting people in 1.0 isnt fair at all i think. hmm gone a bit off topic there, o well

Majority of pvp exist of pvp mice: only attack people who can't possibly hurt them back or run when in danger of getting damaged.
Kudos to those who don't, though. They're the ones setting the difference between carebears and pvp. ------------------------------------------------- Lying Scumbag |

Carebear is a term originated from games that distinguish between PvP and non-PvP servers. Non-PvP server players are 'Carebears' because they opt out of PvP. So therefore avoiding 0.0 space is 'carebear' behaviour.

I have to agree. Part of the trouble with PVP is that frigates and cruisers just dont have a chance againest a pvper in a BS.
Until you get in a BS you just spend all of your time running away, and losing cruisers when you are starting out is a big loss to most peeps.
Even when you do get a BS you need a few mill in skill points to be able to fit any kind of decent PVP setup and even then the guy with uber skills points can still be dealing a good 20-40% extra in damage depending on your gunnery skills to theirs.
When the game went retail everyone was in the same boat, but peeps starting now are miles behind the uber pvpers in terms of skills and experience.
lol @ all thoses that posted "pvp is now dead" when the sentry gun range was increased to 150km. As posted above it was all the pvp mice whinning. If ganking noobs and haulers in your BS was the best PVP had to offer then LMAO !!!
(real pirates trying to make money excluded)
If you want PVP go join an alliance in 0.0, they are always fighting. There are lots of pvper's in the game who want to fight.
If this game was meant to be holy PVP as some peeps seem to think then it would be more like planetside, e.g. we would have the current skill system, but no mining etc... and you could just use vehicles once you had the skills (i.e. they would just spawn at factories). There would be loads of pvp because peeps wouldnt care about losing ships.
I always seem to see a lot of pvp mice whinning that "carebears" wont leave secure areas and line up to be slaughtered like lambs in front of their BS. As said before then goto 0.0 to pvp or join in an alliance there.
However many pvp mice (or shall we say carebear pirates) wont leave empire either :P
Just my few ISK's worth:)

I'm not a PVP player and didn't buy the game to be so either, which, by the way, is only part of the game!. But the game does give me the chance to do what i want!
On my own I could never survive in 0.0 space and so wont be spending much time there. The fact that the term 'carebear' is used to discribe someone who refrains from PVP combat in a PVP game is one thing but this isn't a PVP game! It has PVP elements in it as PART OF THE GAME along with trade, commerse and working for a living (mining!). Right now the reason i mine is to gain access to better ships and equipment to better enhance my progression through the game and to stand a chance in 0.0 space when i finally go there! Those that use the 'carebear' tag to insult someone obviously didn't understand the point of the game!! Those that wish to pvp and design their character and training around this idea sometimes throw their weight around, to make those that don't wish to make pvp'ing their reason for playing the game get into fights with them for an easy victory! (much like the post made a little earlier! which I liked by the way, nice Xavier!) simple bullying! plain and simple, should have been left in the play ground! Two REAL pvp'ers going at it with equal skill points but different actual playing skills would be great to see and will be where i strive to get!
I will one day be in 0.0 space, when i'm not considered chum food for the local sharks! I will have pointy teeth one day mother, one day!!!! Until that day I don't wish to have to become a pvp:mouse to get my kicks!

Hmm could flame but instead I'll disagree with you. Eve is a PVP game in its very essence whether its the commerce aspect of the game or the combat aspect of the game Eve is all about PVP, as i know npc's don't cut prices below cost.
as one plays this game they quickly realize whats the point of paying 14.95 a month to accumulate 9999 of each item, hell whats the point of even having one of an item? As far as character development goes you mine for a bit being a miner, then you'll realize that whether your mining scordite or arkanor its all the same, lock onto roid, turn on mining lasers, click and drag ore from hold to can... rinse repeat. Then you'll say I've now progressed to a manufactuer, so you'll rent a factory slot, install a bp then tell it how many you want and sit back in station and watch the progress report. Are we all having fun yet? Then one day you'll realize that the whole point of mining, then manufacturing, and even doing research is so that one can be involved in the Combat PVP aspect of EVE.
Eve is pure pvp at its core, whether its competing with others on the market or in space with a gun... Its you vs. me. Either cut prices, or pick up a gun, either options are in a format of me vs you.
As for the term carebear, I define a carebear as one who wants to fly their indy around trading goods, making money(for what i don't know) and never suffering a single loss or there never being even the remotest chance of a loss. Wake up tender heart and realize that in Eve its survival of the fitest, none of this tree huggin' hippie ****...
