<0.02> Lets be honest, mines sound like they're a great way to defend your belts and stations from attackers... but they're not for the simple reasons that they're are a pain in the ass to deploy, there's not enough tactical variability and they don't stay there for very long.
To change that perhaps the following would be useful:
1. Mines are a pain to deploy so make them feild objects that you cant get stuck to. Once you lay the first mine you get a beacon in space (only visible to you, your corp and your allinace) saying 'mine feild' and the info on it would tell you it's radius and number of mines in the feild. Then while you are within 1500m of said beacon all mines you deploy simply add to the radius of effect in a volumetric way (ie: the first 10 mines you lay increases the radius of the feild more than the second 10.) This would stop mine feilds becoming too big.
2. The feild could also have a strength value ie: how much damage you take per second while you're in it, dependant again on the number of mines placed (each additional mine placed in a feild would add to both size and strength.)
3. When a ship passes through the mine field it takes damage proportional to the strength of the feild per second. The more damage taken, and there fore the more mines detonating would reduce the size and strength of the feild.
4. Mine feild should be allowed to have several attack options, selectable by the deploying pilot via the mine field beacon. These options could be: attack all but you, attack all but corp, attack all but alliance, attack only people you are at war with.
5. Mine feilds would reduce in size each day (proportional to the size/strenght of the feild) as mines failed and became disfunctional but could be replenished, this would mean that mine feilds wouldn't exist for ever and couldn't be maintained by pilots who are far from them.
6. Because mine feilds would be feild objects there would be much less server/network traffic and wouldn't cause anything like as much lag.
7. Destroying mine feilds, currently mines don't have any in space icons at all and are a pain to find and shoot. With the feild idea there would be a slightly visible feild (akin to what you see currently when you deploy a lot of mines) If the attacked can find the middle of said feild (which wouldn't be too hard if you zoomed out) they could target the beacon and damage to that would reduce the number of mines in the feild and therefore the size and strength.

There have been some very good posts in the past about ideas for mines.
The biggest current problem is them not fitting into anything at all. Kind of a waste of a whole weapon range.
They are also to visible and easy to neutralise.
I will try to dig up the original ideas threads from old bookmarks and return them here sometime

Mines do now work, they've had their capacity decreased and you can now fit 20 into a heavy launcher...

I used mines personaly about a week ago and it was very effective, that corp surrendered to us this week, not because of that, but because of combined pressure I used kestrel so mining was a task, only 2 per standard launcher, but I was able to deploy 600 in about an hour and a half I can post some pics if you all would like. btw they did some good damge to an enemy frig who warped in on me by accident almost killed him befor he knew what hit em Home of Ubiqua Seraph Eve's only all Sarum loyal corporation. |

I think it would be really cool to have "limpet" mines ala Tradewars 2002. That way you could track someone who picked up one of your mines through space. You can make the better limpet mines have a stronger signal so you can track from farther away.
When you dock at a station, you could pay a fee to scan your ship to see if you have picked up any thing on you hull.
I think this would be a great addition to the game.

Only one snag to this idea: Mines = Whines , probably from people who can`t see why they are being damaged for no apparent reason
Minesweeper ships next perhaps?

lol
If people stopped pandering to wingers and carbears this game would be so much more fun :)
Perhaps if deploying mines was an offence in 0.5+ systems it would work better...
