I'm a month into the game and enjoying it a lot. I bought a Thrasher last night and quickly outfitted it as follows: 4 125mm Auto I's, 2 200mm Auto I's, 1 Miner I, 1 Rocket Launcher I, and a 1MN Afterburner. Other odds and ends I have, too: a Burst, a Damage Control I, a Warpp Core Stabilizer. The outfitting was done without a lot of detailed research into tradeoffs on weapons and I thought I would run it up the flagpole and see what the prevailing thoughts might be.
I rasied the money for it mining, but will probably move toward ratting with the Thrasher.
Any thoughts? Have I gone a really bad direction in choices? Am I in the ballpark?
Cheers and happy new year (a touch early), Kansha

I don't want to be mean that's pretty bad :P
well actually I THINK it's bad but I don't know what your fitting for.
if your in high sec then your warp core stab is useless. you'll never be scrambled :) plus that thing cuts your locking range in half and it decreasing your locking speed as well.
next bit of advice is your using a miner 1 up there. however that's silly you should fit for mining or fit for ratting, not both you know what I mean?
put some miner 1's in your nearest base or cargo hold and change gear when you want to mine :)
damage control is good make sure you use it when your losing structure and your trying to warp out.
I would recommend fitting an afterburner for speed. so check there :)
however your missing one important thing, your missing a shield or armor booster. you need a tank to heal yourself when underattack :) I would recommend a shield booster with your afterburner :)
If you still have powergrid and CPU left look into buying a shield extender for that third mid slot. this will give you a nice buffer for rats :)
Finally in those lows you can use that damage control. I also recommend training weapon upgrades and using a gyro stabilizer. These increase your weapon damage :)
however if your moving into low sec then I suppose fitting a WCS is ok as your a close range set up anyways.
basicly you will missing a tank :) and that's no good.
the miner should be swapped out for an autocannon until you plan on mining then go full out mining set up :)
HAVE FUN!

Ahh... That's exactly the kind of critique I was looking for. What you say makes a lot of sense. I'll work it out.

Only kind of tank I could run with my thrasher is shield tank, extender+booster or booster+hardner(s), but then youll miss an AB etc, thrasher isnt too good at tanking, just dps >_> ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼

My thrasher is:
4x Small Tractor Beam 4x Salvager I
Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners
2x Expanded Cargohold II
I'm not really a big fan of destroyers for anything but salvaging, everything they can do a cruiser can do a lot better for not much more ISK. ----- My in Eve Profile My BattleClinic Page |

for ratting i used
7 ac guns (whicher size u can fit) 1 rocket
2 sheild extenders (smalls or mediums when u can fit) ab
2 power diagnostics
once u can squeeze 2 med extenders on this will rat ok although better against gyristas/angels
for bloods / sanshas a armour tank will be better
2 cap rechargers ab
biggest armour plate u can fit 100,200,400mm armor repper

I had my Thrasher (just bought a Cruiser ) with 5 200 guns, 2 150 guns, 1 missle launcher, shield extender (don't remember which one, but it gave me 740 more hp), shield regenerator, afterburner, stabilizer, damage control, and I can't remember what the 3rd thing was lol. You'll find as you rat, you'll get a lot of gear that you can outfit on the Thrasher from the pirates, etc. Just wait until you unleash all 7 guns on a rat, they go bye bye fast (at least the ones in 1.0 to .7 I've run across). I came back a couple weeks ago from a three year hiatus and have been trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. When I left I was in a pretty big corp that had sveral war decs at any given time. So I just was in the habit of having WCS fitted. I had tried a fe things to get my lock times under 60s and lock distance over 30km.
hehe, knew it was something simple.
while we are at it, can you briefly tell me pluses and minuses of afterburners vs MWDs? Or got a link to place with that info? I notice in my old setups I often had one of each fitted.
frustrating I used to know this stuff and there is so much new to learn, seems overwhelming at times.

abs are slower but better on cap use and dont affect your cap amount.
mwds are waaay faster, but nerf ya cap badly (-25%) icrease ya sinature by 5 or 10 times(i forget) which makes everything hurt you and eat cap.
but they are useful, especially in pvp although i personally wou;dnt use em on a frig.
mwd`s dont work in deadspace

Probably the other thing to consider is your gun selection. You put 4 125mm's and 2 200mm's on it.
When you are fitting weapons, basically you want to setup for one range, that way, all your guns are firing all the time as long as you are in your effective range. I personally would fit 7 Artillery guns, as the best way to fight NPC's is to keep your distance and fire at them from outside their firing range. If you must use autocannons, again, use 7 guns, Autocannons this time, and try to prevent them from ganging up on you, as your shields aren't built to handle too many frigates.
The whole problem with destroyers is that while they put out high damage (for a frigate), they still have the shield and armor hp of a (bigger) frigate.

yup yup.
An after burner is great for getting in range normaly, however in the current world of eve a lot of people are flying really really fast ships. and you'll find that you just can't catch up. so a MWD can be great for catching up.
but at the same time the sig radius increase makes people lock on to you 5 times faster and makes you easier to hit.
however a MWD makes you sooo fast that missles won't touch you.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 31/12/2007 23:43:52 Try this as a setup;
6x 200mm autocannon, 1 salvager 1MN afterburner, 2 medium shield extenders (T2, std or named) 2 shield power relays
This should work great for ratting and lvl 1 missions.

Tzar'rim's right. This is the setup I'm currently using, with 2 salvagers. It works great for low level stuff, but can take some skilling to fit. I started my Eve life with a passively tanked Rifter setup from these forums, so I had a head start. But give it a go if you have the skills.

He doesn't. He uses it as a salvager to use after he did a mission, but he forgot to mention that part.

I used my trasher ever since I got Destroyers 1 learned, with following:
Hi: 6 arty (whichever you can fit, as long as they are same calibre and preferably same type) 2 salvagers (before I trained them I used a standard missile launcher, or rocket launchers for the rats that got too close - also, RL take less to fit)
Med: Shield booster AB Shield extender (although you can put in whatever here, not really important)
Low Small armour repair (don't use it except to repair before coming into dock to reduce the repair costs) 1 slot free
Strategy was to get out of rat range, using ABs if needed and orbit at 20 km (or whatever is little further away from your optimal range). Speed keeps you out of range of most rats, and if they get in range, orbiting with AB should keep you far and fast enough that you pop them before your shield is gone. This setup worked fine in most lvl 1 missions, and even tried a few lvl 2s, with a little changes.
ACs are good, but in destroyer you don't really have the shield to survive long, and your signature is about 2.5 times of normal frigate, which means you are hard to miss. also, try not to mix ranges and don't mix mining setups with rat/mission setups.

Don't run both shield and armor tank, either use a shield booster or an armor repper, not both.

some ships can do it.
bait ships.
high resists and an armor and shield buffer.
however yeah don't do it :P

I don't run them both, just when damage drops my shield, I can repair the damage before docking to avoid station repair bill, and since I didn't know what else to put in low slot and had the fitting, why not :).

There's lots of other options like power diagnostics, damage mods or speedmods. If you have armor damage, dock up, add the armo repper, go outside station and then rep. Normally having both armor as shield tank really hurts your setup.

because the theory (fact) is once you run outa cap to run ya sheild booster a armor repper is pretty damn useless
i appreciate the money saving idea but just leave a repper at the station and fit it to repair, their are much better mods you can fit that will mean u wont get armor damage in 1st place.
for instance id u fitt a sheild booster in meds (personally i wouldnt id fit the 2 largest sheild extenders u can) then fit 1 or 2 power diagnostics in the lo`s to complement your mid slots.
if u are running a armor tank (repper/plate) then fitting cap rechargers in the mids will complement the repper, or even a cap power relay if u have spare lo`s after rep/plate (which thrasher doesnt)
you will find building in this manner far excedes the tanking ability of your current build

Very informative discussion, thanks for all the info.
How about furthering the thought process a little?
Say you only have 10 hours a week to play EVE. Would it change any of your setup recommendations?

Setup will still be same, only thing that changes is the purpose of the fit. I change everything according to what is being accomplished. Thus, if you do the same thing all 10 hours of the week, you're fine.
As to the repper thing, here's why I would follow the advice given above: Your tank essentially depends on capacitor regeneration. If you have a certain amount of time before your capacitor breaks, you can basically run your one repper until then. It doesn't matter so much if it's an armor or shield repper, but you can run your one repper until then.
Once your cap dies, no repping occurs until cap regenerates. Thus, your "tank" is made up of your repper and your cap. If you have two reppers, your "tank" is still exactly the same, the only difference is whether or not it's shields or armor that is being repped. If you run out of cap repping one or the other, that's it, your tank has failed.
The only improvement to make here is to expand the capability of your capacitor. Thus, improving the cap improves the duration of your tank. If you have a shield repper and an armor repper, you have the same tank as if you have just one or the other. If you installed a shield repper and a capacitor module, or an armor repper and a capacitor module, you would have a stronger cap that can sustain a longer tank. Thus, repper + cap is far better than repper + repper. A good active tank setup will use both resistance modules and capacitor modules to augment the tank.
A list of suggested cap modules:
Power Diagnostic System: Improves many things, very good with Shield reppers = +4% Cap size, +7.5% Cap recharge, +5% Powergrid, +4% Shield HP, +7.5% Shieldrecharge
Capacitor Recharger: Pure cap recharge bonus, +15% Cap recharge
Capacitor Power Relay: Good bonus to Cap recharge, nerfs shieldboosters, best used with Armor reppers, +20% Cap recharge, -10% Shield Booster amount
Capacitor Booster: Injects Cap charges into Capacitor, have to buy the charges separately, not very cost-effective, very effective
Nosferatu: Drain Cap from enemies, including NPC's, not as effective

You change the setup of your ship to fit the plans/mood you have for that day/evening. Atm I'm using a Thrasher for high sec miner baiting because it's better against drones (some ppeople actually have proper droneskills and know how the game works, so that's more of a challenge which makes it fun).
It's a double repped injected 7x200mm autocannon Thrashie, using an AB on it instead of a MWD for several reasons;
- I really need the cap since I'm double repping, having more cap means you have more of a time window to use the injector. - I want to burn it in combat to get my speed/transversal up a bit since Thrashers aren't exactly quick. Using an MWD would wreck my cap and make me a big target - Dessies are heavy ships compared to Rifters and as such more difficult to control and force into orbit when burning an MWD.
If I'd feel like doing a mission afterwards (like I would ) I'd simply refit to the double shieldextended setup.
