I made a previous thread asking for opinions on WoW, and I came to the conclusion that it'd be a waste of money for a thrill that wasn't so engrossing as Eve. My next question is, what is Star Wars Galaxies like?

From what I've read, the NGE took everything that made WoW popular, and dumbed it down for the console kids.
Probably not worth it.

I've read pretty much the same. If EVE is working for you, then old SWG might be slightly interesting. After "New Game Experience," it's all suck. So basically, don't. Get a PS3 instead, for slightly less disappointment factor. ----- TANSTAAFL

Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 01/01/2008 05:48:10 Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 01/01/2008 05:46:39 What the other's say. CCP should actually be grateful to SOE for destroying SWG. Many SWG exiles came to EVE after the infamous NGE update. SWG used to be a little like Ultima Online with its skill system. It was actually pretty damn good. But then SOE did some staff shifting and the new management who took over SWG took a look at WoW and decided to try and copy it. First they dumbed down combat and then they raped the classless system in favour of 8 strict classes; which killed of traders and upset players who'd spent literally years of effort to become Jedi.
The problem (and the lesson to be learned) was that SOE wanted more players, so they changed the game totally, thus alienating the players they currently had. Because of the bad publicity from the frustrated players SOE had effectively shot themselves in the foot in terms of marketing.
Some people still play SWG though. And some even say they prefer it to the old system. All I can say is that it is a totally different game now from what it used to be. SOE tried to make a WoW clone to get more players when they already had a fanatically loyal player base. They should have catered to their current market instead of trying to entice a new one. Dog with two bones...?
Multiple edits: Trying to type while inebriated on Southern Comfort is tricky.

I used to play SWG when it was good, but then soe destroyed it. I still do play it from time to time, but EVE is what SWG was meant to be though never was. ------- None of what I post unless specifically said otherwise is ever anything to do with DOVES, only myself. |

Edited by: Antiochus Laetus on 01/01/2008 11:48:58 Last time I played it was pretty empty. A couple servers had good numbers, but even in those, if you traveled around a bit, you wouldnt see much activity. A buddy of mine showed me around a few planets, I saw lots of barren cities, and the bars....I cant remember what you call them, starts with a C?...vacant.
I ran across some ppl tyring to build a city who was offering decent money and gifts if you built a house, I think it was on Endor, cant really remember.
Space combat is fun, I liked building a house, good costumization(sp) that all kept my interest for a while, but in the end there just wasnt enough ppl to keep me in the game. New sig coming. |

once upon a time, SWG was fun, then the big bad Lucasarts came around and said unto SOE thusly: "IT IS NOT STARWARSY ENOUGH! FIX". So SOE, in their finite wisdom, tried to fix it. this is what lead to the fabled "New Game Experience"(tm), widely known as the most horrible mistake to ever befall an MMORPGame.

Basically:
Pre-NGE: Fun and rather broken. Post-NGE: Boring and as others have said, a dumbed down version of WoW meets FPS.
That sums up the game for me, and I did play it for a long time.

I was once a big time supporter of SWG even well after the NGE hit. While I don't think SWG is a "bad" game, it just is not anything like the experience you might expect. It is basically a shadow of what it use to be. Instead of adding to the game and making it better, the dev team watered it down to the point that it was no longer anything resembling Star Wars. Point is, stay away! The more you know...the more you know you don't know! |

SWG is now exactly like ENB was before it died.
They pulled all of the development staff off it except for one or two, and they don't upgrade or do a whole lot for it other than keep it alive to pick up a little money for the corporate hats and to be able to say that they own the Star Wars MMOG.
It's going to die horribly sooner or later, more likely sooner, but investing any time in it will really be a waste for you.

"Reports suggest BioWare is working on Knights of the Old Republic multiplayer online title. Widely celebrated as the best Star Wars game of recent years, rumours have emerged that RPG specialist BioWare is hard at work on an MMO version of its hugely popular Knights of the Old Republic franchise.
CVG reports that the latest edition of US games print mag EGM includes the snippet in its Rumour section. No confirmation has been forthcoming from the developer as of yet, but were the game to emerge it would almost certainly be a sure-fire contender to better LucasArtsÆ previous MMO outing, the troubled Star Wars Galaxies."

ARRRG. and another one bites the dust.
How many games and/or game companies have EA killed now? More worried about deadlines and sale numbers than releasing a finished, complete and unique games. All the do take one realllllly good game, and mass produce a dozen sequels of it that suck horribly.

I played SWG for a couple of months just recently.
It's a huge grindfest, for one thing, although that's de rigeur for most MMORPGs. The PvP, what little there is of it, is consensual and horrible. The economy is busted. Glitches, bugs and game play issues that have existed almost since launch are still there, because the current skeleton crew of a dev team doesn't know how to work with the game's code anymore (that's not an exaggeration, either). Since they switched over to using World of Warcraft-style classes, half the population of every server is a Jedi or has a Jedi alt, all wearing the same two or three Jedi robe models.
Speaking of servers, 3/4 of the shards are nearly abandoned, but SOE refuses to do a server merge. Not only that, they charge people left on ghost servers $50 per character to transfer to a non-abandoned server.
The latest content they have released is an insanely long grindfest that would make earning LP for a Gallente Navy Comet doing L1 missions in a rookie ship look like a walk in the park. Basically it's the McDonald's Monopoly game: Collect all twelve pieces for a reward, except HEY! Piece #12 is 200x rarer that all the other pieces. Which kinda defeats the idea of actually collecting the pieces since the other 11 are common as dirt.
As far as the space portion goes... it's okay, I guess. But I would advise you to go with a one-player sim instead, as it would be a lot more fun (and space PvP is insanely rare in the game anyway).
In other words, you DO NOT WANT.

swg was dying the very moment the developers started lying to the players about the existence of jedi in the game, which was well before nge or cu.
The straw that started the cascading failures was holocrons.
The game was much better when jedi in swg were nothing but a myth, hinted at by old broken statues.
ppl were more concerned with having fun than "OMGZORRSMUSTHAVEJEDDIINOOOOWWW" -grinding.
used to love my master rifleman, lying in ambush outside mos eisley in full stormtrooper armor, sniping rebels.
never again.

Maybe because SOE got burned when they merged PlanetSide. But then again, maybe they burned themselves with the expansions that never got used.
I liked PlanetSide. But holy crap what repetitive gameplay. Assault -> blob -> conquer. Defend -> abandon -> Quick hurry up and blob where they're not. ----- TANSTAAFL

Well, in SWG (as you may or may not know), players can build non-instanced cities, towns, and houses on the landscapes of five different planets. For obvious reasons, merging two servers into one (let alone five into one) would cause a huge uproar, because you'd essentially be trying to copy and paste 2-5 lines of text onto the same line of blank space.
The irony is that, on ghost servers, 90% of these once-great cities are now populated entirely by three players and their collective eighteen alts (cities must maintain a certain population or they lose certain privileges).
Horribly complicates things, as you can imagine.
Quote: I liked PlanetSide. But holy crap what repetitive gameplay. Assault -> blob -> conquer. Defend -> abandon -> Quick hurry up and blob where they're not.
It seems like everything SOE touches turns to salt, except for EQII, which I believe is doing okay. I wonder why?
