At the moment i am coding on a project, which turned out to be the largest one i ever began. After 4 weeks almost 20000 lines code were written and it is not even the half of what i think it will be when it's finished.
Since i am playing Eve i toyed with the idea of an interactive map with much more possibilities than the ingame map has. Now finally i started the project, and i am happy with the progress.
From the beginning on i wanted it to realize it as a client/server application, so i started to code the server, which is nearly feature complete as of today. The server downloads sovereignty data, alliance and corp data, most recent kills and jumps in systems and with an appropriate key killmail data, member tracking, etc, etc. In fact the server downloads almost all data the official Eve-API provides steadily and stores it in a sql database.
Furthermore the server has a small built-in http server which is able to serve for the ingame browser. Every authorized member who visits the site as trusted site will send steadily positional data to the server. Then the server relays the data to the client application of the interactive map so the user can see where all members of the alliance or corporation are - and this up to 2 seconds resolution depending on the setting which suits best for the user to lower the lag for the client an automatic refresh may cause. Maybe I will implement it that this server can act for some forum software as registration interface, but this has no priority, since all men know how to code php these days :P
The client itself will run on windows and linux and is an opengl based application. It was intended from the beginning on as a standalone application to be executed on a separate computer or at least on a machine with multiple displays while running Eve at the same time. The client is not in a state yet which can be considered as stable or feature complete. Anyways, i can provide some first screenshots.
fullscreen - universe fullscreen - closer look on empire basic chat functionality/opengl controls - looks still ugly :) alliance quickinfo tool - will be displayed via opengl soon :P
The map is supposed to display all data in the future, including sovereignty, outpost, member data etc, etc. This is not a tool for just looking at the current political situation. The current projects which generate automated pictures will suit better to this purpose i think. Even if i will not post all planned features which are in my head at the moment yet any suggestions are welcome. So if you have any questions drop them here. But I still will need some more time before it's ready for a beta test, so please be patient :P
oh, sorry for my bad english :)

I'm impressed, it looks like an awesome project. I once tried to do something like this (link is in my sig) in Java, but it didn't work out very well. Didn't have much openGL experience.
Anyway, it looks very promising so keep it up :)

Edited by: BAteh on 02/01/2008 00:40:26 Amazing stuff. Kudos.
4 weeks - 20k lines? DAMN, people type slower than you code. ;)
Honestly... CAOD has the trolls, this section has the geeks. Just pick your audience. I would say .. firstly here, THEN CAOD. :)
Regarding #eve-dev.. i see you there already (im cloaked heh). Most of the times, talk is about the EDK, but SOMETIMES drifts to other stuff. Not common, though.
