Edited by: Isaac Hunt on 18/03/2004 23:07:28 Everytime I try to run eve I get the splash screen pop up and instantly get BSOD with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA it seems that the file nv4_disp.dll is the problem but as I am very new to Win XP I have no real idea of what to do about it. I downloaded and applied the newest Bios updates (it is a Lex nForce2 motherboard model BNNF2), the newest Nvidia display drivers for a GeForce 5200FX (also tried the ones on the installation CD) have all the critical updates and all of the recommended updates for XP home edition. Any suggestions?
System spec - AMD 2400XP, Lex BNNF2 M/B nForce2, 512k RAM, GeForce 5200 FX 80GB and 40GB Maxtor HDD, NEC DVD re-writer, SB 5.1 Live Digital Sound. Running Win XP home edition, Norton IS 2004, 64k/128k ISDN connection.

I would hazard a guess as to a faulty memory module.

It isnt the RAM thats the problem, I've tested that with DocMemory V2.0 from Simmtester.com

Have you installed your motherboard drivers as the error can also be given when a motherboard AGP driver is not installed., as you have an nForce2 based board, download them from nVidia but DO NOT install the IDE software drivers (you get the option half way through install).
I would also say that it is possibly a memory fault. It is no good testing memory in windows as it will lock out areas and you will be unable to test it fully. You will need a DOS based tested such as memtest or goldmem (I use Goldmem)

DocMemory makes a Dos based bootdisk then reboots the computer to test so the memory is fine, however I did install the IDE drivers for the motherboard when I got the newest download from Nvidia, I guess I'll have to get rid of them and see how it goes.

I have removed the nForce IDE controllers and the problem still remains the same, although after checking Microsoft Knowlage base I have found that this error can be caused by a faulty gfx card or gfx drivers, since the fault is the same with both the newest and the installation CD's drivers I think it is time to buy another card and check

go get the drivers from the manufacturer...if the manufacturer has them get those....if not get the ones fron nVidia....the ones certified from microsoft for nVdia are lame-o at best...shy away from them ...i have a fx5200 also and windows certified drives from there site suck the big one........at least for me....
i run latest from nVidia themselves...mines ok

I tend to wait several weeks after a new 'reference' driver is released to hear the buzz.
Many gamers swear by 'reference' drivers... IE those drivers that are released by the chipset manufacturer vs. those by the board manufacturer. More often than not, the board manufacturer lags 3-5+ versions of the driver behind nVidia/ATI etc. Windows update tends to lag 10+ versions behind, and it is very annoying. --------------------------------------------------

Wasnt using the drivers from win xp update, I went directly to nvidia site and got the latest from there, though the problem remains the same with both the FX 5200 and my old MX 400 which i used to run eve on, though I never had any problems with either whilst running Win98SE, XP just seems to be really unstable on my setup :S

Is the AGP port sharing an IRQ with other hardware?

Software checks for faulty memory don't always see the error. I had this very problem and diag didn't show it. Did you try the following?:
If you have more than one memory module, remove all but one, and try them one at a time, if you can get past the problem with one and not the other module, memory is the issue.
If however you positively confirm memory is not the issue, then run a deep diag on the co - processor.
Curious question here, do you overclock the mobo?, sometimes it will work for a while until the heat finally affects the processor, causing random errors very similar to memory errors with BSOD, but very diffulcult to pinpoint due to the randomness.
Excuse me if you already tried the above method for checking the ram. Don't mean to be redundant.

This is caused when the video driver makes a bad call to the hardware. It comes as the error described above or IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN error..
If you have a via chipset then install the hyperion 4.51 drivers. i recommend using Nvidia Detonators 53.03 to run Eve atm moment (see my post about the 56.64 iteration of the drivers) If you are unable to obtain them pls reply and i can provide a link to them. I have virtually every flavour of Nvidia driver Official and Beta. Additionally a BIOS upgrade to the motherboard can fix CTD's and BSOD's ( Discoverd during beta phases of Earth and Beyond ) But please note, upgrading the mainboard BIOS is DANGEROUS, only perform an upgrade as last resort and you are COMPLETELY confident in what you are doing. A bios upgrade can correct timimg problems across the AGP bus. Also, if you are overclocking in any way this can cause timing errors and thus BSOD's

I've downloaded the Microsoft certified nVidia drives twice and both times I had to regress. So now I only use the nVidia drivers from nVidia... A friend took the ATI ones from MS in an WinUpdate session... Seems whatever they do to the nVidia ones they use the same process for ATI. That one needed a system rebuild!

right this might help, problem was the game was crashing and rebooting my pc, but this has only just started happening, upgraded to 512 k of ram about a month ago, so i thought it was,nt that, had the computer checked, and it turns out that what i seem to have is two sticks off 256 mb pc3200 ddr 400 mhz ram and one is runnin at 333mhz, for what reason i dont know, my mate has slowed the one down to 333mhz and everthing is now fine, all games ran ok , but eve realy crashed things bad , when i was running 256mb of ram the game was slow, now its up to 512 it runs like a dream , even though i got 2 400mhzs running at 333, will sort the rams thing out with a well known pc shop when i get five mins, but i hope this helps some one, also my mate said it might have been heavy ram use that was making the ram problem show up more with eve, hope you all get sorted out,

Porkmaster : Check the motherboard manual, as some/all (don't know which) motherboards don't support running too many memory modules at high speed, and it also matters whether they are singlesided or doublesided. Might be bad ram, different CAS or similar too.

I have already aseen the Knowlage base article and downloaded the newest nVidia drivers and tried those aswell as the ones from the installation CD, the RAM is a single 512mb chip, I havent been able to try any of this since my HDD went fubar (primary master Hard Disk failure) on me so it is all going back to the shop I got the components at so they can sort it out for me, or so I hope.
