I was told the vagabond was a FOTM ship and I shouldn't train for it because the ship will be nerfed. So out of curiosity I setup a plan to see how long it will take for this new minnie hauling alt to pilot a vagabond with t2 guns and decent navigation skills.
According to EVEMON it will take 158 days with the learning skill suggestions. Which means if I start training right now I'll be ready to pilot one in 6 months (June 8). How is this flavor of the month? It seems like quite a time/skill investment and that's if you don't stray.

"Flavor of the month" whining is generally done by people who fail to realize the amount of skill involved, sp-wise and player-wise.

Its not like its 158 days of skills that will only work on one ship. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Kreul Intentions ([email protected]) |

Flavor of the Month really just means What's hot/uber right now. If you're looking at the ships and see, hey, this Vagabond is really spectacular. I think I will train for it, then 50 days into your 158 day skill plan they nerf the ship because it was too uber, you would have been a victim of training for Flavor of the Month.
If you then look at the ships out there and see that this Caldari ship over here is the best this month (hard to believe, yeah, I know) and you start a 123 day skill plan to get it, you may be a victim of training for Flavor of the Month again.
Train for what you like to fly, no matter what may come. The bunch of ships I train for I train because I like and they would have to give these ships a major overhaul for me not to like that, which I can't see happening. So I'm pretty safe in that regard. --

If the Vaga suits your playstyle, train for it. IF something else cries out for you to pilot it, train that.
I focused my training on the Ferox, then the Raven, then the then the Nighthawk, then Vulture. Now working on Phoenix.
I've pwned Geddons, Phoons, Megathrons, and even Astartes in my Raven. No, don't ask for the setup.
The point is, if it suits your playstyle, and you skill up for it, any ship can be successful. Train what works for you.
Flavour of the month training is hearing how much Gankathrons pwn in PvP and deciding to divert from your current training in Minmatar BS IV to train all those Gallente skills you never trained so you too can pwn. Usually end up that you can pilot a Gankathron at about the same time they nerf it or boost something else. Yay!

That's because until you're about 1 year in the game and have 12+ mil sp you're really a noob. First 6 months or so you train up learning and support skills and fly frigs, cruisers, bc, probably a battleship and tech II frigates with tech II small guns. Then you stop and you go "hmmm, what to train next ... aha! cruiser V seems useful". From there it's less than 2 months of training if you want tech II medium guns in addition which isn't much. When people start playing they generally don't start training for a carrier right away - over half a year of training days until a character can fly it and there's really no fun in waiting 7 months to just fly one ship. So my advice would be to train up for some more newbie-friendly ships first, and then after you've been playing for half a year the vagabond training is going to come more naturally and seem much less painful wrt time you have to wait.

I wouldn't worry to much about the "vaga" nerf if anything might just be some modules that wont stack. Fotm is usally a comment by people that can't adapt.

Vagabond isn't the flavor of the month. Isn't this month the Caldari Recon month?

not yet, most people are still sticking to Minmatar/Gallente for training, Caldari may sneak up but it has not happened yet - this post is proof to that.
