I just started thinking about making a model of my maelstrom for my desk, and the more I thought about it, the better the idea got. I believe it's doable, and have a rough idea how. When I get back to my desktop on the fourth, I'll be starting to look into this more.
The way it would work is this: You eve-mail my char in game with the ship you would like a model of and the approximate size. I'd touch up the model to make it manufacturable, adjust the scaling, send a picture to you for approval, then send it off for a quote. Once I get a quote, I tell you the price direct from the company. Then you have options:
For 50 mil, I'll simply give you the quote from the company that contains all the data you need to get the item shipped to you withing 3-4 business days (USA) and you pay them directly
For 100 mil, I'll set up the ship with a permanent stand / pedestal and then give you the quote.
Anything custom I would certainly do (including modifying the surfaces to have additional indents / extrusions to match features only present in texture on the ships), but isk costs may vary. The only reason I am asking for isk for this is because it will definitely take my time to touch up the models, add stuff, etc.
To give you a rough idea before you ask for a quote, most models (4-5" in length) will probably run at least 100$. This has nothing to do with my cost (I don't have a $ cost), it's the cost of the 3d printing service. I'll be looking into it a lot more real soon. The service I use is one of the lowest in cost and they've done excellent work for me on varying projects in the past. Models would come in a paintable white, although after I give you the quote, you could change the material (there is a clear one, and different solid colors I think).
NOTE: If this is against the EULA, feel free to disregard this post or notify me and I will take it down. I simply thought this idea was really cool.

I doubt you'd find anything about it infringing on the EULA, but it does infringe on CCP's IP ownership of EVE content.

Edited by: Gantrithor105 on 02/01/2008 04:28:53 That's true I suppose, but I'm not sure this is a problem. The way I see it is say that I'm taking a 3d screenshot. I'm not making a profit, and am certainly not passing it off as my own. Anyone else have an oppinion on this?

I sure would love some real life models of my ships, and as far as the EULA I dont see an issue, but as mentioned above CCP's copyright may be an issue. Best way would really to send ccp an email with the details of your proposal and ask them directly if they have any issues with it.

You'd still have to get their permission.

I remember a devblog from a long time ago that showed a prototype for Kestrel collectible that looked amazing. But since that never seemed to have gone any further, it would be great if they'd allow non-profit fan created models.
I'm pretty sure I read about someone offering a similar service for WoW toons on some blog. Maybe you could see if Google can track him down and find out if he had any issues with Blizzard in that venture?

Yeah, that's actually where I got the idea. The only difference is that they paint them afterwards and all... If I was going to do this it would be a solid color... I'll shoot CCP an e-mail and see what they say.

I've e-mailed Kieron, although I haven't heard back yet. I also got my first quote:
133.60 USD for a 4" long model of a Megathron
The link below will take you to a picture of the 3d model to give you an idea how much detail there will be.
Stuff like this would probably only be interesting to someone who'd be willing to do detail work, as they would have some slightly jagged edges (easily sandable) and would need painting.
