God I HATE when people talk about it that way. I totally disagree. Its not just a game, nor is it my life. In my oppinion its a hobby. Like fishing, collecting specific objects, taking pictures of planes and so on. Its something I like to do, and which I put very much thought in, not to mention TIME.
Giving it a second thought I might be partially wrong, since others might not put that much into it, which brings me to the question.
What is this game to you/How much do you put into this game?

Can't it be a game and a hobby? The amount of time I spend playing, it's definitely a hobby, but unlike a lot of players I don't view my in game items as being on the same level as real life possessions. It's still a game, it doesn't hurt to lose. ---------------------------

I view it as a game. To me if I'm not having fun I don't do it. Honestly to me EVE is having fun doing random things in internet spaceships when I have nothing better to do. Personally I can't see why people get so worked up when they lose a ship or something. When I lose an internet spaceship, I just get more internet spacebucks and get another internet spaceship. I have lost nothing real and most of the time had fun in the process of losing it. That philosophy is probably I'm poor, but I enjoy myself and that is what counts.

I remember a while ago when I was a bit of a pirate hater, and they'd all spit the old "it's just a game" line at me on the forums over and over. Then one day I created a thread asking peoples opinions on a reset of the entire game, and guess who were the first to vocalise their disapproval over the idea of losing all their 'hard work' and virtual, non-existant stuff? Heh, we really separated the men from the boys with that topic I can tell you.
As for me, I have to admit at one point I was massively obsessed. But nowadays I'm a bit more 'grown up'. -omg-

Ummmm... it came in a box in the computer games aisle at Best Buy when I fist got Eve. Yes, it is a game... it is not a hobby. Simply because you devote your life and time to it, doesn't make it a hobby. Its still a game. It will always be a game. Why? ... because its not real. Its fake... its pixels and buttons and mouse clicks.
Coin collecting... thats a hobby. RC Cars... thats a hobby. Go to a hobby store... you'll see train sets, models, sports cards... all hobbies.
Eve... just a computer game. Unless you call watching TV a hobby, then be my guest and call playing video games a hobby. Are you one of those guys that actually thinks video games are sports too? Maybe because you can join the G4 Unreal tournament and win cash... or, oh boy Madden 2008.
I'll agree times have changed... being a kid now is all about your virtual fame. But, when you start to classify those things as 'hobbies' or 'sports' then I think you lose your touch with reality.

How do you define a hobby, then? Spending a lot of time playing with model trains? I really don't see how that is any different from playing EVE or other computer games. I would say a hobby is anything you like to spend your free time doing for the purpose of entertainment.

That might actually be the correct answer. Where is the line between having fun aka "wasting time", and spending time on a hobby which somewhat seem to be more accepted amongst other people like non-players. __________________________________

Or you could just give people and their typos a break. When their whole post is misspelled, then you have something to talk about.
For me, it's a hobby. It's something I like to spend my free time doing. I like to build up this "fictional character". I looked for other web games, or whatever, that allowed me to do the same thing. A couple got close...
For those that say "It's not a hobby! Just a game you do for entertainment?" who here would call chess a hobby? But it's just a game! A game you can spend hours to years mastering. A game you can play on little pixels on your computer, or even just send through the mail. This game is over in a matter of minutes (hours, or even months, on mail games). But when it's over, what do you have? The board is reset, your accomplishment erased. Yeah, you could play in tournaments and get some fictional numbers to represent your rating...
Sound like a recent posters description of Eve? I just did a quick Google of "Chess Hobby" and found:
Quote:
1. Is doing the work fun? û The students who thinks that reading chess books, doing chess puzzles, or watching chess instructional videos is great fun and wants to do them as much as possible will not only improve more than those who do not, but also will continue to improve a lot longer. 2. Learns from Their Losses û The student who comes to me with a game score of his/her losses and asks me what they did wrong will do much better than one who either 1) hates losing, takes it personally and doesnÆt want to discuss their losses or 2) one who doesnÆt care about losing and doesnÆt mind losing the same way over and over again. 3. Chess is a High Priority Hobby û For all my students, chess is just a hobby. It takes a back place to schoolwork, work, religion, etc. However, where chess stands among the studentÆs other hobbies is a crucial factor. I would never tell a student or parent where to prioritize chess; however, I would be remiss to not reveal that all of my students who advanced quickly placed chess as a high priority hobby, if not #1.
Wow, that sounds a lot like Eve. So if chess can be a hobby, why can't Eve?

Seconded. EVE is a hobby. Even if you disagree, it takes a considerable amount of time. Fueling POS, mining for production resources, running missions for LP, all these require a substantial amount of RL time and thus a commitment. Train sets, fixing old cars, collecting coins, these are the old hobbies. Gaming is just a new one. This isn't Final Fantasy I or even GTA San Andreas where you can replace a game/character in a matter of less than a week. A character in this game takes months to years of work.
So, yes, EVE is just a game. But it is also a pursuit that is just as serious as any other hobby. Virtual with no physical substance? Yes. But combine that with people and real social connections centering around a game that teaches tactics, teamwork, and many other things and you have a serious endeavor.

Can you imagine if, instead of football that one christmas night, the Germans and British played EVE. It would have been so funny!
But seriously, it's a game and a hobby. Then again, most things are games and hobbies. Sports were mentioned, if people (like bufties) take football seriously and devote their life to it, then it's a hobby, but all the while it's still just a game of kicked a ball around with some tactics involved. _____________________________ Thorek Ironbrow of Ironbrow Industries Co. It's whatever you make it, nothing more, nothing less. By definition it's a game. Many people consider it a hobby. To some it's an allconsuming obsession. To some it's a life, since they don't have one. In some cases this is not a bad thing, a person might be physically limited and this provides an outlet and social interaction they may not have access to in RL. To the rest of you, seek HELP!

Surely the hobby is Computer Gaming and EVE is just one game of a multitude you might play?
Gaming = Hobby EVE = Game.
Obviously if the only game you play is EVE (which I would bet is a minority, although I'm not sure that the forum posters would show the correct split) then that ends up with EVE being the entire part of your gaming hobby.
Of course I could be horribly horribly wrong, in which case ignore this and I'll go back to my cave ;[ |

Edited by: Casino Alkasar on 05/01/2008 19:05:03 In Eve you can easily loose lots of isk and effort.
By the course for Gtc and by the time for loosing SP if you dont clone you could calculate that into RL money.
So there are people who would like to do RL stuff to other people about ingame actions.
I frown upon that, thats big BS.
I would have no problem to drink a beer with a player who robbed my corp. Maybe we have even a good chat and a laugh about it. I also dont believe you can judge the charakter of people by their ingame actions. But well i come from rpg gaming _________________ itze mine |

I disagree. Football should be taken less seriously.
Well, I personally agree, but keep in mind that there is been at least one Real Life war over football.....
"But"? Surely that's a very good reason why football should be taken less seriously? It's just a game, yet it sparks small fights and full scale riots in which people get injured or killed. Which war was started over it, out of interest? ---------------------------
