What would be a good ship for starting to do level 3 missions? I have only average skills and am looking for a good, safe ship, not necessarily one that will work for some players who have maxxed out all their skills.
I would like to fly a Flycatcher and/or a Crow. They both look sleek and fast.... but are either of these suitable for level 3 missions? And of course I would have to train Frigate, Destroyer, and Evasive Maneuvering all to level 5 for the Flycatcher, and almost as much for the Crow, so it would be a while before I could fly one.

The ships with the lowest skill (time) requirements to feasibly run L3 missions are battlecruisers; if you don't want to use a Drake because everybody has one, a Ferox works just as well for the most part, just does the work a little slower. L3 missions in small ships are a lot of fun imo, but you'd have to use Assault Frigates which take quite a while to use well. I think Interceptors can pretty much be ruled out for most L3s because their only tank is their speed and that won't help them enough with damage coming from all sides; there will always be something towards which your transversal is low. A well setup Flycatcher might be able to run at least some L3 missions because it has the mid slots to fit some tank (mostly NPC specific hardeners), but it is pretty large and easier to hit than frigate sized ships; you'd also have to use Rockets to help with damage (but at least the Flycatcher gets a 50% missile/rocket velocity bonus, so you have better range). All this would be pretty far from the Drake's "easy mode" and most probably not work for all L3 missions, also it is skill (several weeks just to be able to get into an Interdictor, let alone use it properly or have any decent secondary skills) and ISK (36M ISK for the Interdictors skill alone - that's a fitted Ferox !) intensive; also, you are not unlikely to lose the dictor and lose 10M ISK on the ship alone because it can't be insured for its full price (as is normal with T2 ships).
Use a BC (which can be fully insured, maybe even above the price you buy it for) to get going, and later, with better skills, come back in AFs if you really fancy small ships (like I do; I run L3 missions in nearly all of the AFs and rat Serpentis and Guristas in 0.0 in an Enyo).

BC is the easiest ship to get into and use for lvl 3 missions. Truth is Truth |

Any BC will work tho Drake has the advantage of selectable damage types.

I will go with the crowd and say a drake. Selectable dmg, bonus to tanking, and missles are easy for nubs to use.

Consider this: A well fitted Drake with decent skills can (sometimes) be a tough match for a Nighthawk.
A Ferox isn't.
Go with the Drake.
