I finally took the plunge and had my first few pirate encounters this evening.
I headed into low-sec around the Nonni area and popped on my scanner. I'm not that great with it so I had to fiddle around for a while to pin point someone. I found an Ibis out in an asteroid field. Warped in and popped him really fast. I fooled around there for a minute or two though being that I was so excited and a Vaga dropped in on me. One shotted me pretty much =P
Later on, I ventured way out into low sec. I was still having trouble using my scanner, but I finally figured out that there was a Celestis ratting in the belts moving around. I caught up to him and kicked in my MWD and closed to 500m fast. Scramed and Webbed, and he went down surprisingly fast. I think a rat or two may have helped. However, I saw a couple rats that scared me and I freaking warped to the damn station and got waxed lol.
All in all, great fun. Its just tough to find systems with actual targets in em =/

Targets is low sec are getting scarcer and scarcer for every day.
Belt piracy is not what it used to be. Plan ahead and consider going the probe mission runners route or some other route. You can spend an evening not finding a single target in belt these days.

I really think they should upgrade lowsec rewards a bit. ;) It's tougher to survive in lowsec than it is in secure 0.0, and the rewards in 0.0 are greater. |

Nonni area eh? So that would be Aunenen next door - thats where i started my piracy career. I have a feeling its a bit infested in there though, so targets in belts might be a bit tricky to come by.

there are quite a few fights to be had over in that area... but not quite as much as some of the other lowsec areas in minmatar and amarr space

Well, its all I can really fly so I use it. It seems to work ok but i've only ever had a couple encounters that were legit.

I dont know of any small pirate corps but I would say that you get a better ship before thinking about really pirating or joining a pirate corp. Maybe a cruiser or Battlecruiser.

Belt piracy pretty much sucks. Most ratters/miners, as in almost 100% of them, will spam the scanner and watch local and flee as soon as anyone that is remotely a threat is in their vicinity. Hence, you almost have to have an alt that can probe and/or recon for you in order to pirate profitably.
Or, you can go into a busy system and sit in a belt at 100km out and inevitably a pirate will show up. At that point you just need to see what they are flying and decide if you want to fight or run. But, fighting other pirates that will typically have far more sp's and superior ships in belts is not fun nor profitable.
Meh....

Similar suggestion to what Nupe said;
I have a safespot set up in a system that gives me a clear line of sight at the first belt. It's a rather quiet system with around 5 people in local during daytime. I can sit in the safespot and scan the belt at 5 degrees waiting for someone to pop in, and then decide if I want to engage depending on what the ship is. I just change the degreee to 360 to get an idea of what's being flown in the system if local jumps.
If you plan to have a spot like this set up near a belt (or several), make sure you're not too close to a planet ( or another easy to warp to object) or you'll be found pretty easily.
Congratulations on your first kill anyway. An Ibis may not be anything great but at least it's one under your belt :)

Nice read - I got my first pvp kill in a Merlin. Hit me up in game if you'd like to join up with a corp that likes to 'surprise pvp'. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.
