Someone mentioned in a different thread that you can get a passive income from datacores if you raise standing with research agents...
Could someone explain how to go about this for a newbie minmatar? I can only run level 1 missions right now as I'm still busy training up the huge list of stuff I need :)

Your first step is to find a agent that offers the type of datacores that you want, higher level and quality means more datacores per day. Then you check the standing needed for the agent to work with you and start to grind missions, whith a regular agent in the same corp, to reach the required level.
To find research agents you can use www.eve-agents.com
Then you need to train the specific skill for that type of datacore, for instance mechanical engineering to the same level as the agent is (not certain about this, level 1 might be enough).
If you want to use more than one agent you need to train the research project management skill, which allows 1 more agent per skill level.
Check the marke to see which datacores are selling for good prices (I'm using mechanical and molecular engineering)

Nimani is correct; you only need the skill to be 1 to be able to start using the agent. Higher skill levels (for both agent and you) and higher agent level will increase RP gain per day.
Other than that - R&D agents have two standing requirements, the usual faction/corp/agent standing and a separate corp standing.
Training up Negotiation will increase the agent's Effective Quality and will also raise RP per day.
You can also do one mission a day for the agent, which will double your RP gain for that day.
