Just started thinking about this problem we would face in space. How would we get our daily fix of Earl Grey/other tea? Kettle wouldn't work, nor would microwave. Would we just heat sealed puches of water and squeeze them into modified teapots? Discuss.

im not sure how its dealt with now, but im thinking sealed cup with integrated heatwiring (orwotsitsname).
but another problem would be.... dontcha need to remove the leaves from the hot water soonish when you drink such a horrible and bitter tea
tbh i think they dont boil leaves up there, they just use powder or something...

I think they have space tea right now.
They basically have a pouch with the beverage cold of course. And they heat it in a microwave and they basically squeeze it out of a nozzle into there mouths. I belive milk is already included. There is also a milkless version too.
The ammounts of either thats shipped to space is decided in advance too.

This is the bottleneck that has been slowing down English spaceflight. _

At which point you get a cupful of liquid that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.

Edited by: Sister Impotentata on 09/01/2008 02:13:28 Contrary to continental opinion, we do in fact know how to make tea in the US. And our best technique translates well to orbital flight. Sun Tea. The folks in Coors country know how to do it most properly, that's where I learned it. It's a short jump from a gallon of water in a jar on a mountaintop to the unlimited thermos that is extra-atmospheric space.
Wasting station energy because you need an immediate cuppa is a no-no. Brew slowly in advance with readily available solar energy. The energy you intercept with your tea brewing means less energy the station has to dissipate. Win Win.

Yeah, contrary to popular misconception, the biggest problem in space in Earth orbit is not that it's too cold (in Earth shade, you can get down to -160ŚC), but that it's usually too hot... up to over 200ŚC "in the sun". That's more than enough to boil water, heh. Of course, a "blob" of water exposed to space would still freeze (more likely, a small part of it will turn to "snow" in a mini-explosion of water vapor, then slowly and fully turn to vapor), but only due to near-vacuum pressure in Earth orbit, not due to any temperature differences (same thing would happend wether it was in the sun or in the shade, minimal differences).
