If the problem with mining in empire space is really that new players do not have any roids to mine, then why not fix that problem and not mess with non-noobies? I think the easiest solution is to create some noobie starter systems where noobies would spawn. In the system they could do some agent missions, mine, or kill npc droids.. they could do this for as long as they want but once they leave they could not return. The only think availble to them in the starter systems would be noobie frigates, all the "basic" version of items, and an NPC market that will be minerals, items, and droid certs.
This gives the noobies a place to get thier feet wet before going out into the real world. Since this all takes place in pods, then these could be "virutal systems" and call it part of the training given by the NPC corp that the noobie starts with.
Then you could just leave mining the way it is.

Edited by: MkVenner on 20/03/2004 21:09:46 Yeah thats a good idea cept theres one little problem...when I first started I had alot of questions which were answered by not-noob players who woulda left the "virtual system" by then...
other than that its a good idea ----------------- "To live is to suffer, but to survive? Well, that's to find the meaning in the suffering."

I agree, how about we make a better tutorial so the beginners don't have to continue learning after the first day.

Edited by: Finraer on 20/03/2004 22:43:22 Why not just restrict mining in 1.0 systems to characters up to 1 week old and 0.9 for characters up to 2 weeks old (timings and sec status subject to tweaking if you wish)? - if your character is older than that, the miners will not activate.
Should solve the problem nicely imo.

1 week seems reasonable enough to me - after all as a new character you have to spend a decent amount of time online to get skills sorted. I didn't start slacking too much until I passed 1mil skill points
The point of choosing real time was that its shown in people's employment history so it must be something that CCP can easily use in coding.
Any system is going to be harsh to someone but I'd argue that if you are going to buy a new online game and not spend a decent amount of time playing in the first week having created your new character then you are probably in the minority.
I see the 1.0 belts as a chance for complete beginners to mine enough to buy their first frigate and then head out to 0.9 and below. Possibly the restriction on the 0.9 belt could be relaxed to 3 weeks or a month - a 0.9 belt is still safe enough for a character in a starter frigate after all.
