Edited by: Kehmor on 09/01/2008 11:50:20 In my opinion this is one thing that has been long overdue in game, an opinion profanity filter. I was reminded of this the otherday when I accidently let the s word slip into a public chat channel. It wasn't aimed at anyone nor used in an offensive way, I just said that a ship (the ferox) was s***. Anyway, long story short someone petitioned me, I got a warning. Not really whining as I was even gagged.
Anyway as it stands people use the petition system as a method of combat when they cannot argue for themselves. So please introduce a profanity filter so we can all turn it off and get on with things. It means those of us who choose to can make use of more colourful language while leaving children and the more sensitive amongst us safe from such filthy habits. It would also probably mean a 90% reduction in all harrassment petitions which can only be a good thing.
Anyway, my random morning ramble. Flame on.

Quite frankly, anyone that is old enough to understand the intricacies of this game will likely already know all of those 'filthy words'. While I've no direct objection to a profanity filter, it's yet another new feature that isn't really necessary. I'd rather not give the devs yet another pond they drop bugs into. -- 99% of Eve-o posters should stop posting. This probably includes me, but definitely includes you. |

I got gagged after a long series of lame "your mom" jokes.
Zero profanity.
Some Eastern European dude started talking smack in local, and I try to get him to steal from my can for a fight and then he petitions me for talking smack. I need to search my logs and find his corp so we can wardec them.
But more importantly they need to stop gagging people for betch-petitions. If you don't like profanity go live in a ******* cave. EVE, and more importantly the real world and the internet are full of it. It's not CCP's job to protect children from whatever, it's the parents' job. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes

Edited by: Melor Rend on 10/01/2008 17:07:15 I totally agree with you... I can't believe that anyone would seriously petition you for using the S-word... and it's even more unbelievable that a GM would actually give you a warning for such a harmless word AND utterly harmless use of the word (since you weren't calling anyone names but only stating an opinion). Imho CCPs GMs should use their common sense in these matters... I can understand that you get a warning for calling other players names and using profanity in a disturbing way (e.g. spam jita all day or some such stuff) but if someone only says that they think a ferox is s### then that really shouldn't warrant a warning!
CCP really needs to get their act together... I think I'd be forced to instantly quit playing if I got a warning or gag for such a laughable "offense".
I only hope these kind of imbecilic rules don't count in non-public chats...
Well on the up-side I guess now I'll simply go around and make it my life's job to petition every single person that says ANYTHING that could vaguely be interpreted as bad language. The next person to use the word for a female parent in jita will get it.
Have fun working through my petitions CCP.
Censorship in EVE is simply so damn moronic... this game is supposed to be a harsh place where you get murdered for the simple reason of being to weak... but god help you if you ever say "s###".
I can't think of anything more laughable.

First off, while I would not petition anyone for profanity, I can see it being done just like I can see petitioning anyone for being perceived as breaking the rules... and while I agree a Profanity Filter is a good idea, with it should come more enforcement/stricter punishment... (This is a "Be Careful what you ask for, you may get it" thing...)
This forum has a profanity filter that we can't choose to turn off, I think we should be able to... I don't much care if you use profanity or not and at times find it almost appropriate... But this forum has a filter that is always on... and look how often people try to get around it...
With a Filter that can be turned off and on, the punishment for avoiding the filter, just like avoiding Concord, should be punished harshly.

So CCP warns people about swearing, yet lets ISK sellers spam public channels for hours before they are banned? What a weird set of priorities.

Petitioned ISK sellers get banned more quickly than petitioned players get gagged.
That's not surprising. What's weird is they haven't yet implemented a system that prevents ISK selling. It's not like email spam where there's no central controlling authority, so all they have to do is put a Bayesian filter on chat and EVE mail and the problem goes away. But apparently they think that's too hard, despite the fact that Google can do it for several orders of magnitude more messages and it's still lightning fast.
It seems CCP doesn't do anything if they think it's hard. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes

Profanity filters in a game that involves murdering millions of people a day on avrage is just hypocratical to begin with, so i'm all for beeing able to express myself fully without causing someone else to rocket into the roof becouse i happen to mention a body-part they pretend not existing, or what has been the most basic instinct among living creatures since we where bacterial sludge... |

Ammusing how you didn't really read the OP. I'm not moaning about the colourful language, infact I'm all for it. An *optional* profanity filter would allow people to speak how they like while not being petitioned for it.
I agree that that huge majority of people in this game probably don't care about language like this but that doesn't stop people from abusing the petition system.

That's why I never use local. We're a bunch of sailors in corp chat as it stands.
Multiple mmo's have this option. Hell you start off with the chat being cencored and if you want to see it then you type /filter. Not a hard concept.
Oh and I'm enjoying my ferox. Doesn't compare to the drake but atleast it makes the missions more interesting.

Yes this would be great. That way I can curse freely without little children getting their virgin ear cherries popped. I love playing Company of Heroes because not only is it a great game, you can unwind have some fun scream curse talk sh** and let out your stress. I personally have a huge hatred towards little kid mentalities that think cursing is wrong. I don't curse that often, but sometimes when something stressful happens I wanna let one out and I don't need some pus** telling me not to curse. I'm not a child I am an adult, adult's curse it is part of life.

Made me lol.
Apart from that I agree... we need an optional language filter if CCP intends to start *****ing (edit: omg I thought CCP wanted to fix that! ) down on people simply for using a single dirty word in local even if it isn't intended to insult someone. |

Couldn't agree more. Like the OP I was petitioned and warned from a bogus complaint as well. For that CCP you will recieve a petition from me for anything and everything that could even possibly offend even the most pathetically oversensitive person online. People that get offended by so called 'foul' langauge make me sick anyway. Oh noes mommy he said a bad word! Sheesh, grow a freakin backbone or gtfo the internet.

there should be a language filter, however corps/alliances should choose to turn it on or off in theyre chats. Local however should always be filtered (think of the little ones ;-) )
