Representing another Earth & Beyond refugee, I am playing a 10-day EvE trial right now and considering upgrading to a full version.
My questions:
1. What is the status of the game? Is the game stable (not planned to be cancelled)?
2. What are the "common rules" should I be aware of so I don't get stabbed in the back (For example: It's not recommended to lock on to other players)?

1) the game is stable accept after initial patches. But follow up patches are released shortly after to fix any bugs that ensue. The game is kind of in a core stage right now if you have read about all the future plans CCP has for the game. In the next few months the game will start to fill up more with many of the promised elements.
2) You can target people anywhere, just don't shoot/scan/jam them. Of course if they shoot you then you get a free Concord gank show. ------------------

1. It is not stable. It is expanding
2. To begin with you should stay in space with 0,5 - 1,0 rating and then you should be safe from attacks by another players (unless you are at war with them )
I would not lock other players since they might consider that aggression. You can always use "Show info" to check people out. From there you can click their corp logo to get info about that as well.
Good luck in the Eve

Notice When you're near another ship, on yoou screen it shows little square icons. Don't target the big ones.

if you don't wake up, i'll have to stop kissing you. all that flailing has made you sleepy. you rest while i untie you. stay here until they find you. My hand made mannequin. i won't let them get you. they'll know you're mine by the fingerprints on your throat. isn't she lovely? isn't she wonderful? like the *****s that we are, swatting flies from the wounds we design. |

I think by stable, Origim means, does the game have long term plans, i.e will Eve be around for years to come.
(having just come from EnB myself, I understant Origim''s, and many others frustrations at having leveled up a toon, only to see the developers of the game have their resourses stripped, and subsequently the closure of the game announced).

common rules (so to speak) 1]dont lock people to check them out, some people are trigger happy and will shoot anything that locks them, as a alternative use show info or use look at and that will give you a close up veiw of the ship/drone/object.
2]dont take ore from cans that are not your, some make a living at stealing ore(technacly any can that can be opened by you is free game to pick up), doing this will get one some people kill list if you ever venture out of 0.5>1.0 space(I currently have 3 people I have on my kill list).
3]Becareful if ventureing out to 0.0 space for almost all to all regions are controled by a alliance most will probly shot you on sight(not a rule but a word of warning).
4]try not to kill steal if you go to camp a belt/pirate base ,because depending on the security of the system you may be their next target.
If you like exsploreing go to this system "Dead End" (planet 5 moon5 station I belive) and check out the base their, from what I know its the only station in the game like that(hint: think of a movie with 2010 in the titel)

By chatting to other players you'll soon make friends in EVE. Find some who you get on well with and join their corp, this is the best way to accelerate learning from the games supportive community.
Welcome to EVE! Hope you decide to stay.

A great resource in this game is the ôhelp cannelö some time there are authorized helpersà they speak in different colors other than white. But if not most of the regular seasoned players in there are more than helpful. If you are quietly mining away in your first weeks or just auto piloting along go there and just watch for a wile, you will learn a lot just by watching. I have never seen a game with people so willing to help. Word of warning in there donÆt beg for money. They donÆt like that.
Once you leave your starter corp and join up with some blokes that are in another corp, you will find that they are more than willing to help you out with starter advice, ships, mods, amo, cash and so forth..
