As the Caldari are roughly based on a super-capitalist Japan I went more or less with the Japanese warship naming conventions. Cruisers named after mythical birds/animals, frigates named after birds and battleships named after Japan or provinces of japan.
The Maru suffix indicates that the ship is privately owned or commercial. Its debatable as to what it actually means though 'Hakudo Maru' is the name of the mythical celestial being that taught the Japanese how to build ships.
So currently:
Caracal: Ryuho Maru (Dragon and Phoenix)
Merlin: Taiyo Maru (Greater Falcon)
Kestrel: Kaiyo Maru (Sea Falcon)
Someday when I actually get a battleship it will be called:
Yamato Maru (An ancient word meaning Japan and also the name of a modern province)
