Hi, I've just been completely stuffed by the Tiscali saga.
What ISPs are working well for you in the UK?
(At all times of day please, not just 03:05 am for 30 seconds when Tiscali would like me to play for their convenience.)
Thanks,
F.

Orange. No hard cap if you go over the 2meg/limited download package, they just send a letter after 2 months saying you will be moved up to 8meg/unlimited and have to pay a bit more.
I am currently waiting for the first letter ...
Service hasn't missed a beat so far.

Talk Talk 4 me - 20Gig month - no port blocking
Any problems just ask for 2nd level support after talking to script kiddies in South Africa. I had my line renewed to the exchange by them after suffering old age in my local loop.
Have been with them for nearly a year now and I only suffer a drop once in a blue moon. I get just over 5Mb with TT - my ZenADSL connection could only manage a max of 2Mb

Virgin cable for me. I'm not sure if this is the same for "regular" Virgin broadband.
Check out http://www.the-scream.co.uk/
The forums there might give some help.

No Virgin were well known for traffic shaping and causing problems, though their ceo promised to relent somewhat this year.

Virgin cable is a different beast from Virgin broadband via a telephone line.
The traffic isn't shaped on cable but there are daily download limits (pretty high) where they will cut your download speed to half for a few hours if you exceed the limit.

I have just today been on the phone with Pipex to find out the date when my contract expires. 5th of Feb so can't wait. Got my MAC code on the way so I can get my ISP changes over on the day contract is up so no waiting around "hopefully". I have been thinking about going with BT Broadband as I am sick of when I used to phone Tiscali and they would say "its a problem with BT" and when I used to call pipex and theyd say "its a problem with tiscali". Atleast with BT if there are problems it's their problem.
I am however open to suggestions so please keep suggestions coming in for Freya B and others like us.

Just got a new deal with Orange. It includes your line rental and phone too, 8meg and a free second line. Unlimited downloads(with fair usage policy...pretty common) and it costs ú24 a month. No set up fee. They send you a Livebox for wireless connectivity(can be used wired too)
They contact BT and inform them of the change. I dread doing this kind of thing usually but I have to say it was painless. Can do it all at their site, don't even need to speak to anyone halfways across the world heheh.

I've been with BT, you call them with a problem and they say the problem is with BT Wholesale...I kid you not. BT Internet is a seperate company from BT Wholesale and the buck passing still happens with them.
Having said that BT weren't too bad and if I didn't have the option of cable, they would probably be reasonably high on my list.

Edited by: N4PALM on 17/01/2008 01:05:59 I already made a recomendation here:
Linkage
Entanet = WIN
I would add to it to avoid Orange, Virgin and BT. I know people who have been with them and they really do suck, oh and lets not even talk about Talk-Talk!
Oh and that BT homehub is an awful piece of sh.. Equipment!
That said some people have been happy with these ISP's, but I'd say thats more down to luck than anything.
I can go into detail but that would make this post too long. --- I'm in yr posts dleetin all yr sigs - Cortes Fight the power! - Cortes |
