I hate it when people project human morals on the animal kingdom.
Nature is "brutal" seen with human eyes, but it's a process of evolution. It isn't pretty all the time, and eg. a cat playing with a suffering mouse definitely isn't necessarily "just for food". Animals can "have fun" killing eachother.
Like that japanese wasp, they go and kill entire bee hives (30,000 bees or so) - I doubt all that killing is "necessary" by human standards, but it's not for us to decide.
With that said though, I don't appreciate the "unnatural" conditions they put these animals into. If they were filming in real nature where these animals encountered eachother in a forest, and not a plastic cage, then it would definitely be different, as would it be if it was wild cats fighting under circumstances they were in.
But sure, it's fascinating. I'd be a liar if I didn't agree with it - but the "show-fun" plastic construct with hosts and "WINNER" coming up from time to time does not appeal at all. Poor taste.

better watch where you step from now on. Don't want to step on an "innocent little bug". Driving to work everyday I probably kill tens of insects who were merely in the wrong place at the wrong time, how inhumane!

I really can't sympathize with people getting enjoyment out of that kind of stuff. On the other hand, I don't really care enough to get angry at them for doing so. On the third hand, that kind of people also don't get a micron of sympathy from me when bad stuff happens to them - which, in my curiously peculiar experience, usually happens. The universe is a marvellous place. Quid pro quo.

The japs sure do have some weak ass praying manti. I had 2 of them in a little cage once, they got alogn with each other fine (i fed em crickets and such). Then I found a pregnant female and threw her in there, within an hour all that was left was a pregnant female and some wings at the bottom of the cage.

What does the origin of the Mantii have to do with it? In pretty much all of Insecta, a gravid female is a solopwnmobile.
Similarly but differently; in social Felidae a male coming to power always kills kits that are not of his get. ----- TANSTAAFL

Mantises are renowned for their fighting prowess but they're bottom tier because they're light, have no venom, no armour and they aren't strong enough to penetrate anything.
Also the plural of mantis is not manti. |

Things like teeth, claws, stingers, hardened shells, poisonous glands, and camouflage are part of a natural evolution designed over thousands of years to protect the creature in question. Man's evolution was ingenuity and the ability to create weapons with the tools on hand ranging from a rock and a big stick to current day weaponry.
This show demonstrates each insects natural abilities and how they pair with each other.
So yes, I do have a gun and I now owe myself another $5 because I knew you were gonna say that.
that sounds more like some american hick excuse arguing against the moves to ban guns.
Guns are not natural. Our evolution was to have the ability to make and handle things; that doesnt make the objects/tools we make natural at all. Thus you should not be allowed to use one. (cant even believe im bothering to argue with such idiocy in the first place but whatever)
Pairing animals from different sides of the planet, different parts of the food chain and so forth is not natural. It is sickening to see two animals put in a tub against their will, and forced to fight to the death against their will - how is this fair micheal (shouldnt that be michael?). Just watch the fights, despite large amounts of editing there are still many cases where the animals are in opposite corners trying to scramble up the glass to freedom. It is a pointless waste of life.

I can neither relate to the 'waste of life' side of the argument nor to the 'worthless insects'. Spiders in your home keep the flies down. Moths in your home ruin clothing and food. What I'm getting at is that you can very well draw a line that has nothing to do with cuteness or the level of intelligence we are attributing to some animal or the other. Then again, if some people in Japan are bored out of their minds, I don't really give a damn, it's not going to have an impact on even the most local Fauna.. People eating endangered species might, but this is merely a bunch of guys who failed to grow up in my opinion.
And as to people enjoying it.. As others mentioned before it's not a big deal different from fictional violence in media today. Or a boxer beating his opponent into a coma he will never awaken from. I can't say I like it, haven't even watched those videos. Though when I come across an ant fighting a wasp in the park I certainly stop and watch those things, it feels more real, as opposed to a set up fight or a scripted and powerplotted movie.
The different ideas people in here have on 'natural', 'moral', 'evolution' and some other words are at times interesting and noteworthy, at other times outright funny.

It's my understanding that the Japanese do not recognize the concept of natural/unnatural. Everything is natural. Everything comes from nature. Our intelligence is a product of nature, and guns are a product of our intelligence. Guns are made of things like iron and wood. Natural. ----- TANSTAAFL

Pretty much my understanding of the Japanese's stance on the world too. Anyway on topic, If I ever come across one of those damn hornets It better pray I'm not carrying my modified super-soaker-flame-thrower-of-death. Also did anyone watch the Hercules Beetle vs. Scorpion fight? that was pretty interesting how the Scorpion kept trying to get behind the Beetle by using the water.
Then again I'm weird like that. ---

Actually the American Redneck argument to fight the banning of firearms is one simple phrase: "You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead fingers". nuff said.
And I don't know why spellcheck has my name backwards. It's always been Micheal in my book (and birth documents). I prefer Van or Dietrich though.
But since we brought up the Coliseum, I should point out that the human fighters that entered the arena weilded swords, shields, flails, maces, clubs, knives, and poles/polearms when fighting each other or an animal so of you want the arena opened again I will walk in with a gun. I'll let ya look at the other points made in this thread on what is natural.
And japan has praying manti as well as most of the world. The centipede I think may be from India. The hornet is Exclusively from Japan. I've never seen a crawdad of that color (mine are a deeper red) so I'm guessing they got one from around the area. And Scorpions are plenty abound in china. So not really from all over the world.
But I guess it doesn't matter anyways. I'm already going to hell because I used to do this exact same thing when I was twelve. Yaknow, put bugs in a jar and watch em go at it. Same thing millions of kids do each year. Guess we're all little murderers at heart.
In fact just last summer I was showing a bunch of friends kids the wonderful outside world and what a praying mantis is capable of. Now does that make me an educational person or a bad man?
