Got a patch from my friends at Microsoft last night, but couldn't reboot because I had some stuff rendering in the background and left it at that when I went to bed. When I woke up this morning it had, for my security, rebooted my machine. Not the first time I've gone afk and been ganked by that feature...
Anyway, is there a way to avoid the reboot happening without turning off Windows Update or unplug your network cable in the middle of each week in case it should be Patch Tuesday?

Start > Right Click my Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates > Download updates but let me choose to install them
Then you can install them at your own accord. -- Banned since 2005, back by popular demand! They said it wouldn't happen!! |

Ah... I looked at that panel this morning, but I guess I was too ticked off to comprehend it...
Thanks. :)

on top of that, i think... if you NEVER answer the first question "reboot now or later", ie, leave that window open, it wont reboot either.
i dunno, SOME of these question windows have a blue bar, that is counting down to the automatic reboot. some dont. (i think it was the first, if you leave it unanswered).
so - theoretically - if you never "reboot now" nor "reboot later" in the first place, it should keep rendering, even with total automatic updates
i know it works, i just cant remember how exactly..

Doesn't work, because it counts down, and if you don't do anything it switches your computer off. And even if you click "reboot later", it'll just pop up again soon. There's no escape I tells ya! --------------------------------------------------------------------

atleast MS asks wether you want to reboot now or later, try updating Supreme Commanders GPGnet software. Once its done you get a 5 minute countdown until it simply restarts your PC. Nothing you can do.

Buh, wha? WTH would it need to reboot your PC? Does it have some really clever (read: intrusive and stupid) copy/cheat protection system driver (reminds of the horror that was StarForce...)?
Also, download now, install later rocks. Mildly annoying that the restart dialog reappears after 10 minutes if I dismiss it, but I can live with that.
I've been staring at the restart dialog since last patch Tuesday as I installed the updates right away back then but haven't gotten around to rebooting yet. Guess I gotta do that sometime so I can install the new ones... The horror...

Its not intrusive copy protection, just their games matching service. It apparently can't just restart to enable the changes, but needs to reboot completely. Quite annoying, especially after a reinstall. (complete patches is something they apparently never heard off either. Reinstalling SupCom after a computer wipe led to about an hour of patch-restart-repeat before it was back up to date) the first patch to supcom actually removed its CD-checks

Umm... Not to be a Pedant, but Restart = Reboot. They mean the same thing.
Now, if you mean Log Off vs Restart, then yes, those are different things. As is a complete shut down that requires you to depress the power button to start the machine back up again. Otherwise restart and reboot mean exactly the same thing. /ITgeek

Kill the process.
This works for many obnoxious installers.
And the program they were installing often works without a reboot too -

Actually Crumplecorn, you can't. The restart popup appears after setup is complete and has shut down. Its part of windows itself, no process i can find unless i kill rundll itself, forcing me to reboot anyway. Even with admin acces i can't shut it down on its own. Whoever programmed that is using a rather effective command from XPs own set.

If its a timed shutdown, where it says 'the system is shutting down in mm:ss', you could try 'shutdown -a' in a command prompt.
If that doesn't work, move on to silver bullets and decapitation. -

That supcom auto restart occurs in only *1* patch, and is likley the patch that removes securom from the game (which does require a reboot to complete). Its also easily override able through DOS prompt.

That is true for Forged Alliance yes, its only pulled that one once. But i do remember re-installing vanilla SupCom a while ago and having to go through several of the things. But anyway next time it happens i'll try that command to shut it down.
