okay, I was just solo mining in high security space and got killed by Concord. This is what happened:
I was in a blackbird using 3 mining lasers and a missile launcher to fight off rats. I was the only person in the belt. An NPC pirate came in and attacked me so I started shooting missiles at it when all of a sudden I see a brief message that I initiated agression on player X, who had apparently recently warped into the belt and got close enough to me to accidentally be hit by a targeted missile.
So I'm down one ship. What irks me is this player got close to me because they had come to rob my ore. They also got to loot my dead ship.
So what I'm wondering is; does this happen often? I thought targeted missiles where safe? they hit what you target them to hit. I knew that torpedoes are dangerous as they can cause situations like this, but hadn't heard of anything like this happening before.
just curious. And thought I'd point out my experience to others. I feel pretty stupid to loose a ship and an hours worth of mining (as well as lose standing with concord) due to an accident involving an ore thief (a real criminal who made out quite well today).
I guess the best thing to do is keep an eye on the radar scaner for players in your area when using any missiles.

Edited by: Zasra on 22/03/2004 01:31:12 Were you using FOF missles?
Edit: NM seems you specifically said 'targeted' missles.. sounds like a bug, you should partition, and tell'em your side of the story.

Yes I was using standard light missiles, not FOF or torpedoes
so standard/targeted missiles shouldn't hit a player if it's not targeted on them? Okay, yeah, it didn't seem right. I'll try and see what they say. thanks.

This does sound like a bug. Didnt they reduce the splash damage from missiles in the last patch?

Edited by: Feral on 22/03/2004 14:18:52 It is possible for an untargetted ship to be hit by a missile if it gets in the flight line. I have seen it happen (my indy took 3 heavy missiles once, before I could move out the way of the fool using them.)
Given your description, the ore thief was probably in the flight line (possibly deliberately) of the missiles you were firing at the rats.

yeah, I asked in the help chat room in game and they said nothing could be done.
It's just funny. kind of like getting into a fender bender and then the police rush in and shoot me without asking questions. Ah it would be so cool if we had robot police with limited AI in real life :)
oh well I guess this proves that it's good to be insured, even in high security areas. I'm glad I was.
