Nope, no chance of them changing type. You can kill them if you like, as long as you leave one, but it's not really worth the time; besides, chains don't usually reappear all at once, they appear one by one with a few minutes gap in between them. So if you kill off 2 of the 3 smaller ships, you may end up waiting an extra 10 minutes just until the BS respawn...
so, "no" :) --

I was always under the impression that an officer could spawn in any 0.0 system. Which is correct?

I believe this to be the case (that they can spawn anywhere in 0.0). Personally, I've only encountered them in Venal (where every system may as well be -1.0 for ratting purposes) but I've known a couple of people who've had them in Deklein in CCP-US which is, off the top of my head, a -0.993 system.
If anyone's had an officer spawn in less than -0.8 can you confirm this please? --

New to ratting i made a plan afther reading this post. I had to get some income to supply my shiplosses, and couldnt stand more missionrunning. My observations are as following afther ratting about every day for som hours in 2 weeks.
first i ratted in a 0.07 system. It was dead end and tons of belts. Didnt have any competition and no reds / roams came to visit me . Rats never got higher than 1m i think.
Moved my cans and ammo to a -0.7xx system: Not that many belts, but rats are good. Lots of 1.5m+ spawns and some factionspawns. The wierd thing afther ratting there for 1,5 weeks is that i never got any faction bs...only cruisersized factionspawns. Not that it watters that much. Needed to increase my sec status and wallet, and the drops made a NICE income. Never did see an officer spawn there, and nobody i talked to that ratted there/visited had ever seen or heard of a officer in that system or area.
btw: its not npc region.

Officers can spawn anywhere, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the likelihood is MUCH higher in rat sovereign systems ("NPC 0.0").
I've personally gotten two officers in Vale of the Silent (Thon and Kaikka), and had a corpmate also get one.

Very nice guide Ralara!
Just 1 question: you said you'll find the 1.85mil BSses closer to the bottumn of the negative scale. So that would be from -1.0 to -0.7. However I'm seeing this different: I ratted a lot back in the days at y-4 ( where you guys are now ;) ). I saw lots of usurpers, while y-4 is only -0.19.
Now I'm around a system called 7-UH4Z and its sec. rating is -0.36. But I've never seen a usurper yet...
Is this dependent on other factors? Thx in advance.

Might be that y-4 has guristas sov, if it is so then the truesec doesn't matter as it's considered to be -1.0 for spawn purposes afaik.

I very much like this guide. It was very informative, and that is critical for me, as I'm a carebear professional ratter. I have a few questions, though.
1.) If I'm ratting in a pirate-owned area, I really couldn't feasibly use their stations, right? I would have to haul and store my own stuff? Also, are these faction null-sec areas heavily camped?
2.) I have noticed that I have found commander ships a lot more often in high-sec than when I rat in low-sec for hours. My mining alt has found most of the ones scouting asteroids. Is this because people are killing far more rats due to miners, or is there a greater chance in high-sec?
3.) Is there any point in doing Cosmic Anamolies? The foes are far more demanding on my ship, but I don't seem to find anything special. Am I getting a lot more salvage per hour this way, or should I just keep ratting in the belts?

Just to add (it may have been added already, lots of posts), you do get mods from haulers from time to time so best checking all the cans, I recieved 2 ice mining upgrade from a hauler that sold for 45 million total. An erin and alara I think they where. Just FYI :D |

I'm not so sure about the wipe everything increases chances part. The way i rat is what ppl call chaining: wipe the rats unless there are BSs of 1.1 or more (sometimes i only leave groups with spawns of 1.5mil or more), in that case leave the smaller frigate/support so the BSs respawn again. I was doing this at -0.005 or something, nothing spectacular like a -1.0 (where i didn't find much different rats, just nice minerals); from time to time the "Commander" class would appear, usually in a cruiser with a couple of support bs, sometimes in a bs with 2 more bs supporting, sometimes the haulers, maybe once a day or every two days; not doing more than 2 or 3 hours. In that cheap system, one day after just 1hr of the usual i found 4 BSs class rats in a belt, now thats strange, one of them having a funny name and a 20mil bounty; so yes, one of the infamous officers and he dropped a Modified Cap Recharger valued 3 Bil 2 weeks ago (currently evil merchs want to drive down the price). And no, i did not wipe all the rats, just the worthless ones, and kept a few belts as usual. So i wouldn't say its not luck or if you can increase/decrease chances by wiping everything, but its more effective to leave the high value spawns and not think too much about the Officer, but the Commander is much much easier to spot, also the haulers.
I am not sure the terms are correct here, shouldn't the Commander be the one with the 20mil Bounty and modified items with his name? -- Wine + fix |

Facts: 3x Dark Lords [ 3x1.5 M ] + some cheap frigs spawn in a belt i warp to .... my sutpid drones kill the frigs so i decide to leave 1 BS alive for posterity to enjoy more isk then i did...
Gallente Person warps to belt sees the wrecks and starts screaming in local sthg like " you killed the spawn.. you are dumb etc... you cant chain blah blah blah" which generated a argument of a very interesting nature
Question:
1. is there any way you can influence the spawning of rats after DT with your actions before DT? as in if youa re very uber cool and pro at chaining will the rats after DT be better?
2. Will the chain survive if the BS is left alive and the support is killed? [ please dont start explaining me that this is not recommended and it aint worth it blah blah blah ]
Thank you for the great write-up :)

Yes mate if your drones auto aggro and pop the suport fleet, then u can leave a BS and the rest will respawn again. (done it myself). And no... DT resets all systems, nothing you can do to alter it for the better.
Hope this helps.

Are BSs practically required for 0.0 ratting? I'm a new-ish player with a little bit over 1 mill SP, and I'm guessing I'm no where near close enough to being able to rat efficiently in these areas. Just getting tired of missioning already :P
I do have a nice passive tanked hurricane setup, but the problem is, of course, that I can't currently afford to lose this ship.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet in the thread and it might go sticky I'll add a great post I found while googling for info on drone ratting. Written by someone named Mother Drone 2008.01.14 in an similar thread.
"Ranking:
BattleshipRank1: Drone Controller BattleshipRank2: Swarm Preserver Drone BattleshipRank3: Spearhead Drone BattleshipRank4: Domination Drone BattleshipRank5: Supreme Drone Parasite BattleshipRank6: Drone Ruler BattleshipRank7: Drone Creator BattleshipRank8: Patriarch Drone BattleshipRank9: Matriarch Drone BattleshipRank10: Drone Queen

EliteCruiserRank1: Strain Viral Infector Drone EliteCruiserRank2: Strain Violator Drone
All drone battleships can drop up to 200m¦ in alloys. The higher the rank the better the chance for a "good" amount of alloys BUT it is not a straight ladder like bounties. Even a Drone Queen can give laughable amounts of alloys and a Drone Controller can give phat loot. So the true sec status is less important for ratting compared to systems with regular bounty rats. Cruiser/frig sized drones are simply not worth to be looted. When salvaging drones you can receive all possible salvage loot ... e.g. Alloyed Tritanium Bar or Melted Capacitor Console but very small amounts. The average salvage loot of drones is really bad.
There are neither officer spawns nor hauler spawns but faction/commander spawns called "Sentient..." as already said. These commanders have no regular alloys and if you are lucky you can get some building parts needed for T2 rigs. Since Trinity they drop some stuff for manufacturing the new metadrones."
