I am talking about the circle that shows at the top of the screen when you have someone targetted. Whenever we are killing a ship, we continue to pound it AFTER it's entire circle is gone. I have noticed this in Chaos as well. In some cases, people will get away after the entire circle is gone and then some. It has always been my understanding that the left half of the circle represents the enemies shield, the right top half is armor, and right bottom half is hull (which seems like a stupid way to go about things). Is this not correct? Can someone please advise?
Thanks

the right portion of the circle represents armor + hull/structure. There is no distinction between armor and hull / structure afaik.

Eh, no. Left = Shield, Right = Armor. Structure is not displayed at all.

iheard that once the circle is complete, the target still has 25-50% hull left -----------------------------------------------

The circle should be 1/2 blue (shield) and 1/2 orange (armor) and 1/2 red (structure) then it would be much more accurrate. ------

Hey Jim, wouldn't that make one and a half circles? That would be hard to represent visually.
But 1/3 & 1/3 & 1/3 would be nice, especially with the color representation. |

or, to use jims numbers, left half blue for shields (why exactly are they blue in most space sims anyways ), right half orange for armor, and underlying a red half for the hull... ----

then you would have to say left 1/2 blue, upper right 1/4 orange, lower right 1/4 red...
but than again, that is nitpicking... /me slaps himself for being dumb ----

Hardin..come now...that was fun on the forums. And we even got a picture from Jim...which looks great by the way Jim.
Even better, have the tragetting recticle circle diplay based on a percentage breakdown on the ratio of shields to armor to structure. This would give you an immiate visual indicator of whether you're dealing with a shield tank or armour tank. Choose appropriate ammo, stir and viola...an informed combat decision.

That would be clearly more correct, yes. But this kind of division of the circle has to be interactive...
For instance, to reflect the true state of the ship, the circle parts might vary.
Take a ship. Let's say it has 500 in shield, 400 in armor and 300 in hull. With this setup, 5/12th of the circle is shield, 4/12th is armor, 3/12th is hull. Now the guy fits a +400 armor, totalizing 800 in armor.
The new circle subdivisions state as follows :
5/16 of shield, 8/16 of armor and 3/16 of hull.
Now the display (stating on Jim's colors) should show half of the cirlce as armor... (\_/) (O.o) (> <)=Oveur (proof) "Jumping 50 systems I can like, have sex 150 times during that period" |

what adds to the confusion is that npc explode when the circle goes full red and pc ships don't!

I think shield should be represented by a nice sort of abstract illustration, probably in water colours or some sort of river scene.. Dutch mid 18th century maybe...Armour would, of course, be a post-modernist sculpture of man and structure would, without doubt, be a iconographic representation of the female form, to show the continuous nature of the female chromosome indicating the structure that binds us all together.
All in pastel colours btw... (maybe wrapped neatly in a gingham style border?)

hmm... actually i liked that idea that has been brought up some posts abouve about making 3 segments of the cicle and let them resize according to the actual enemy shield/armor/hull hitpoint ratio...
but id even couple it with a new targeting skill... maybe call it Scandata analysis.
at lvl 0: you only see left 1/2 shield, right 1/2 armor
at lvl 1: you will see same as above, and get the ability to read the shield strengh/max with a mouse over
at lvl 2: you will see left 1/2 shield, right upper 1/4 armor, right lower 1/4 hull and still mouseover for shield
at lvl 3: you will see same as at lvl 3, only now you can mouseover shield & armor for info.
at lvl 4: the cicle will be devided into 3 segments, their size representing the relative max strengh of each shield, armor and hull.. mouseover works for all three
at lvl 5: you get all the above, but you get an additional 2% chance of penetrating the outer layer (shield, or if shield isnt there, armor) if only hull is left, the penetration simply goes through, doing half the damage (and of course, a grafical representation would be nice, both on the shot itself and on the ship ) the penetration is justified by the fact that you are an expert in analyse the sensor data, and therefor might find fluxes in the shield matrix or shottraps/weakspots in the armor)
well.. just some thoughts... dont know if you like it or now, comment away ----
