IÆll apologise in advance because IÆm sure this has been said so many times before, but it took me 23 long days to find it out and there must be other nubs like me out there. Consider this a bump.
DonÆt use the autopilot when sitting at the PC. Put your destination into the auto pilot and then just manually warp to the stargate. You will come out of warp right on top of it (right click on it and jump). No more painfully slow journeys to the stargate.

Yup, autopilot trades speed (and safety) for the ability to make long journeys without having to be at the keyboard. However, using the waypoint system to guide you is a very good idea.

Auto pilot will get you killed and is slow. The only case to use AP is when you have to go AFK for a long while and you set the Route to avoid .4 and lower security systems before you go. You never want to go AFK or use AP with valuable cargo because suicide gankers may get you during that slow crawl to the gate.

Just to expand upon that warning about AP with valuable cargo, last night I picked up a few Giant Secure cans that were the cargo of some poor ******* who didn't quite make it. The first can I snagged was loaded with a Helios + ammunition. The next can had a bunch of mining crystals, minerals and assorted gear. Since I was running empty at the time, I was able to scoop the cans in passing, but even running empty, I kept up the Warp to Zero bit. (Some suicide gankers aren't bright enough to carry cargo scanners)
Even with Warp to Zero, it's a *VERY GOOD IDEA* to maintain a strong tank on your haulers at all times. Having to make a few extra trips is better than losing a massive load. If it's really valuable, run scouts and an escort with that load.
