My ex roommate walked away with some electronic items, 1 of which is my laptop.
I called HP and they gave me the hp securities phone number and told me that I need to have the police call that number and they will verify that its mine.
From there I know my ex-roommate's place of work and I'm confident the police will locate my laptop.
Anyone else ever go through this? |

No but my ex roommate stole a cooking pot and a butter knife from me, so I stole a cooking pot and a knife from my next roommate and called it even. It just wasn't a big enough deal to bother the police with. |

It takes a truly idiotic person to steal a valuable item from a roommate who knows where that person lives, works, or drinks their morning coffee. You'd spend more money covering your trail than the device is worth...
Really.
However, my ex-roommate did misplace a knife from my knife block. He a good friend though, so I forgave him. |

Many items were taken from my former home totaling roughly 1500. u.s. currency.
I called the manufactures of the electronics. They provided me with statements including proof of ownership and serial numbers.
Other items such as furniture don't have serial numbers so I don't think I have a claim on those items.
I know where my ex-roomate works, lives and I start the legal process Monday.
Its very unfortunate, but this has taught me how important it is to register you're high dollar electronics with the manufacturer in order to prove ownership in such an instance.

My ex roommate used my computer to look up pron that involved ****.... which downloaded enough malware onto my computer I couldn't dislodge it with an exocet missile and also didn't delete the browser history so when my girlfriend went on the computer after I had left for class I got an angry phone call that wasn't entirely my fault  |

When this dispute ends up being settled in front of a TV jugde tell us so we can all watch it and cheer for you.
I broke my roommates bike once, while riding it. I might have given him my mom's bike in return.

I had a backpack stolen out of my car at a stoplight in Quito, Ecuador. Bastard got my laptop, cellphone, ipod, and mouse. I considered it karma for having bought the ipod 2 weeks prior. Haven't bought one since, and haven't had anything stolen since.
Unfortunately, I was in Ecuador, so there was pretty much no shot at getting the bag/electronics back. Did a statement to the police anyway, and my insurance covered the loss, thankfully. |

I researched the court laws for the county I live in and according to small claims court. If I win, the court cannot force her to give my things back. If I win, I only gain the ability to beg her for my things back..........that's it.

If I do win my case, I get to ask for my stuff, harder....more sternly. All she has to do is ignore me to win (legally)
Notice the part about talking to a lawyer? Yeah my only option after winning the case is throwing thousands at a lawyer in order to try and garnish her wages and suspend her driver's license. But I'm sure its not cheap.
The part that surprises me the most is that the law is telling me its perfectly ok to steal from people.
I spoke to my friend who is going to school to be a lawyer, she told me not to bother, she said she would be surprised if I got anything for my trouble.
From the sound of it, all I could get out of this is a guilty verdict put on her record. |

Due to the fact that I have a lot of documents involving months of hard work, and software that isn't easily acquired by anyone, I think I'd consider killing someone if they tried to take my computer.
Or at least a VERY harsh beat down. |

That is tough, Suppose you could call her family and tell them about it or so. Maybe close friends, but they could take her side too much maybe.
